Business Has Slowed to a Crawl

Now, more than ever, it's important to support our local businesses. Getting through summer can often be challenging for local restaurants and shops, and they appreciate your support. Shopping local is also more convenient, with less driving (remember gas prices), and helps foster relationships with local businesses, as well.

Cautioning Our Visitors
(When Yer Hot - Yer HOT!)

Yes! When yer hot, yer HOT! That’s an important thing to be aware of in the desert! As desert businesses and residents living safely with the heat is something we know and deal with daily. Out-of-town visitors, however, may not!

Visitors from other climates often are unaware of how crucial heat protection is in our desert environment. According to Maricopa County Public Health, there were 339 heat-related deaths in 2021, a 5% increase from 2020 and a 70% increase from 2019. Eighty-two percent of all heat-associated deaths occurred in the months of June, July, and August. Are we surprised? No.

Unfortunately, it's not only out-of-town visitors who make unwise choices in the desert heat, but residents who feel indestructible do so, as well.

As wise desert dwellers, it's our responsibility to help make visitors (and residents, too) aware of the dangers of desert heat. Let's not assume they already know. Let's remind them to stay hydrated, wear proper clothing, shoes and hats, and avoid being in the sun when possible. NEVER leaving children, pets, or any adults in a parked car during desert summer is something we all know - visitors may not. Tell them.

Click HERE for a Maricopa County Public Health flier describing the symptoms of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and heat emergencies. Please print it off and make copies as handouts for customers, clients, and out-of-town visitors, AND residents with whom you interact during the summer. You may think doing this isn't much, but distributing these fliers to your guests and clients could save a life.

Remember, there were 339 heat-related deaths in 2021. That number would have been less if any of the heat victims had read this flier. That means-Yes...YOU can make a difference!

Click HERE for information in the "Heat-Associated Deaths in Maricopa County, AZ Preliminary Report for 2021."

Happy Summer!
Stay COOL!

Town Manager's Corner
Dear Cave Creek Merchants,

Town Council Members had an opportunity to check out our brand-new Cave Creek Type 6 Brush Fire Truck prior to the June 20 Council meeting. Thanks to the efforts of the Mayor and Town Council Members and our Staff, the Town of Cave Creek is now in a better position to fight wildfires if the need occurs.

Once the Brush Truck is outfitted, we will schedule an opportunity for everyone to get an up-close look at this remarkable piece of equipment and speak with the fire fighters who are trained in using the Type 6 Brush Truck in fighting wildfires. We will be sure to provide public notice of the date, time and place of this event for everyone to view this remarkable piece of equipment and speak with the fire fighters who will be its trained crew.

One other remarkable note: Special thanks goes out to our very own Jim Ford, Director of Community Risk Reduction who assists the Town in Fire Prevention and managing the fire service contract with Daisy Mountain Fire and Medical. We are proud to announce that Jim was recently awarded the James M. Shannon Advocacy Medal from the National Fire Protection Association at their 125th Anniversary Conference in Boston for his “significant contributions” in lessening losses from fire and other hazards. Congratulations Jim!

The Marshal's Corner
Greetings from Marshal Stein,

June has been a HOT one! We are currently in STAGE TWO FiRE RESTRICTIONS! NO OUTSIDE FIRES. That means no outside fire pits as well. NO FIREWORKS, that includes SPARKLERS! Folks - Flagstaff is getting clobbered as we speak with yet another wildland fire. Please, please be careful. If you tow a boat or trailer, make certain your chains are not dragging. Almost every year we have one knucklehead or another whom causes a small brush fire doing something ILLEGAL. Remember - NO FIREWORKS (any form) Allowed.

Election signs…yes folks, it is certainly that time of year again. Election season. Political candidates ARE allowed to place their signs within the right of way. It is a MISDEMEANOR, to REMOVE, Alter, Deface or Cover a candidate’s political sign. You may not like certain candidates for certain offices. You may not agree with their ideologies, however, these folks are VOLUNTEERING to step up and run for office. Please respect the law and do not remove their political signs. If a sign is dangerous in some way, call my office. We will inspect the sign and notify the candidate if the sign is a safety violation. For some reason, this year, I have received calls asking if political signs for candidates OUTSIDE of Cave Creek elections are allowed in town. The answer is YES. Even Carefree Candidates may post their political office signs in our town.

Dogs - This is not rocket science, yet I somehow feel the need to remind people…DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOGS in your vehicle with the windows up and no air conditioning. I do not care if it is only for a minute (I don’t believe you), or “This was the first time,” (Still don’t believe you). It gets HOT FAST in our vehicles without the A/C on. Our furry friends love us (most of us); they rely on us to protect them. Please do your part.

Watch your kids around water. We are seeing more and more kids drowning. ALWAYS watch your kids around water. Learn CPR and learn how to save a life.

And finally, rumor has it that Nancy Perry is scheduling another one of her car shows in town for the month of October! Nancy has been absent since COVID however, she promises to bring another great car show to our town.

Stay Safe and Stay Cool.

Spur Cross Road Construction
Improves Road Safety

On June 6th, the Cave Creek public works crew began the long-awaited project to widen Spur Cross Road directly north of the Jewel of the Creek. For approximately 650 feet the Public Works crew widened the road from 18 feet to an average of 26 feet. After performing the widening portion of the project, staff lowered the 200 foot peak of the roadway by 2 feet to increase sight visibility. This allows oncoming traffic to be visible from approximately 200 feet at any given time providing a dramatically safer route to and from the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area parking lot.

During the week of June 20th, Staff temporarily finished the roadway by installing 4 inches of Ground Surface Asphalt (GSA) over the newly widened and lowered section of Spur Cross Road. Please note that Staff plans to resurface the entire stretch of Spur Cross Road from the end of pavement to the parking lot with the recently obtained GSA in the very near future, giving motorists a much safer and enjoyable drive out to the Spur Cross Conservation Area.

We thank our dedicated Public Works crew for their hard work making our roadways safer!

Candidates' Forum

It was standing room only at the 2-day Candidate's Forum held at the Desert Foothills Library on the evenings of June 14 and 15. The event was organized by Chris and Tim Grub. Helping out were volunteers Melanie and David Phelps and Elisa and Rob McArthur.

Incumbents and new candidates alike were eager to share their positions on town concerns. Mayoral candidates presenting both evening were Bob Morris and Eileen Wright. The twelve candidates (including 5 incumbents) vying for six Council seats were separated into two groups. Ernie Bunch, Paul Eelkema, Thomas McGuire, Bryan (Dusty) Rhodes, and Kathryn Royer presented on Tuesday evening (Anna Marsolo was absent due to illness.) Presenting on Wednesday evening were Tom Augherton, Susan Clancy, C.W. Jensen, Katya Kincel, David Smith, and Ron Sova.

Audience members were given the opportunity to ask two questions directed at all candidates. The questions were dropped into a box for later grouping by topic and then to be published anonymously on the forum website where candidate responses will be posted as received.

The audience of voters appreciated this in-person opportunity to meet and hear from each of the candidates running in this upcoming election. In addition, the website Cave Creek Candidates Forum has been created and made available to all candidates in order to inform voters on their qualifications and platform statements. This informative site can be accessed by clicking HERE. Many thanks to Christine and Tim Grubb for organizing the forums and also to Melanie, David, Elisa and Rob for their important assistance at the event.

Cave Creek's Primary Election date is August 5th and the General Election will be held on November 8th. More about the Council election can be found HERE on the Town's site.

It's Summer - Come Visit!

Say "Hello" to Larry, one of our many friendly tourism bureau volunteers.

It's summer and things have slowed down in our Cave Creek Tourism Bureau (CCTB). Visitor traffic has reduced tremendously and, being a group of very friendly and sociable volunteers, we're bored. We'd love for you to stop in, say hello, and chat awhile about Cave Creek. Our tourism bureau is the perfect place to cool off and learn a little more about the town in which you live. We have maps, menus, shopping info and more for you.

Businesses, this is the time to restock your fliers for the next season. If you're not yet a participating Cave Creek business member of the tourism bureau, this is the perfect time to introduce yourself and join in (it's free).

Reminder: The CCTB summer hours are Fri-Sun from 10am-2pm.

*Volunteers: We always welcome new members to our CCTB volunteer team. You're the friendly type? You love Cave Creek? You're looking for a darned good reason to escape household chores? The CCTB is for YOU! Summer is the best time to start volunteering and learn "the ropes" while things are slow. Come by and see what it's all about. Promise -You'll like it. (Regular full-time season begins Oct. 1.)

Photo: Larry, and our many other friendly volunteers, is waiting for you to come in and say' "Hello."

June 4: Desert Foothills Book Festival
The first annual Desert Foothills Book Festival was held on Saturday, June 4 at The Holland Center. Sixty local authors from all over the Valley took part in the event. The over 200 people in attendance were treated to a tote bag, a free raffle ticket to win one of the authors’ books, and a program listing all the authors and our wonderful sponsors. In addition to meeting authors and purchasing books, there were presentations on the craft of writing, a children’s story time, readings of excerpts from selected authors, and a special raffle for sixteen gift baskets, each valued at over $100. All in all, it was a fun and rewarding day.

Here’s what a few of the attendees had to say: “It was spectacular! A real book fair.” “An outstanding event. The community needs this.” “A great first event! I enjoyed the experience and hope to participate in the future.” “Facilities are ideal and accommodating.” “Very fun! I like the community supporting book festivals.”

The organizing committee is already at work gearing up for next year to make it even bigger and better. The second annual Desert Foothills Book Festival will be Saturday, October 21, 2023. Save the date now! - Caren Cantrell, Committee Chair

June 30: Cave Creek Candidates' Forum
The candidates running for office in Cave Creek were invited to the forum at Frontier Town. Candidates had an opportunity to speak and members of the audience had a chance to ask questions. The event was sponsored by Marc Peagler, owner of Frontier Town and moderated by Matthew Peagler. The event was yet another chance for the Cave Creek community to meet and learn about candidates and their positions in order to make a wise choice at the polls. Thank you to the Peagler family for hosting this event.
