A Note From Our Executive Director

Greetings friends!

Is it me or do these precious summer days just fly by? I am doing my best to

soak up every moment of warmth and energy that these days bring. We are thrilled to report continued growth throughout this year at MDNA. (See our graphic below.) As you may know, MDNA is currently the only home health care agency providing care on Mount Desert Island. We have met the increased demand by hiring into two key clinical positions: a physical and occupational therapist. We also need to hire a nurse to round out our clinical team!

In addition to getting the word out about the important work our team is doing everyday, we are offering a free 4-part education series later this summer (details below), enjoyed being a part of the July 4th parade in Bar Harbor, are celebrating our 75th anniversary with a dinner party hosted by our friend Ruth Marie Colket at her stunning estate, and are amidst our 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign!

We are a small and mighty team of 14 and an amazing, hardworking board of 10 led by our new Chairperson Kay Rand. We are humbled to celebrate 75 years of service to our community!

I personally have a great sense of honor and feel privileged to shepherd this organization forward into the next 75 years. I am grateful to all our supporters: past, current and future for your help with this critical work, and for your belief and your trust in MDNA. As one of our eloquent board members has said, health care needs are a great equalizer and when issues arise, having quality compassionate AND accessible care is vital. That sentiment is the underpinning of our work. Be well and soak in these summer days – fleeting as they are!

Filling Some Big Shoes

by Kay Rand, President of the Board of Directors

As I assume the role of President of the Board of Directors in the year we celebrate our 75th anniversary, I feel both daunted and inspired.

I am daunted by the challenge of filling the shoes of Mazzie Gogolak, our former President who gave unceasingly to the work and services of MDNA. Mazzie oversaw significant transitions that have positioned MDNA well for the next 75 years. We became a Medicare-certified provider, took great financial risks to maintain and attract high-caliber clinical professionals, expanded our services to Tremont and Lamoine, and are in the midst of a Capital Campaign to increase our endowment to a place where it can better ensure our financial future. Mazzie left her footprints all over MDNA, and I hope to carry on in her tradition of tireless service.

I joined the Board of MDNA in 2019 after assisting MDNA get its Medicare certification, as Chief of Staff to Senator Angus King. I learned a lot about MDNA during that time and developed a vast appreciation for the mission of a small agency taking on a big mission - improving the health, independence, and safety of our neighbors who share this magical place we call home. MDNA is a unique agency in Maine, and we are so lucky they are here for us.

ENSURING THE NEXT 75 YEARS OF MDNA!

by Mark Gauthier, 75th Anniversary Committee Chair

We are well into the year-long fundraising effort for Mount Desert Nursing Association’s 75th Anniversary Capital Campaign, and community members have stepped up encouragingly. Perhaps the best news is that the majority of contributors thus far to the Capital Campaign are new, first-time supporters of MDNA, with funds coming from generous donors in Seal Harbor, Bar Harbor, and Southwest Harbor, in addition to faithful underwriters in Northeast Harbor. Now, with the summer season in full swing and seasonal folks in residence, the energy around the Campaign’s outreach has revved up, as the Committee makes presentations to many of our neighbors for whom, surprisingly, MDNA’s services are unfamiliar. To quote one recent donor, “Thank you for bringing the important work of MDNA to our attention. We want to be good neighbors and community members, so of course you may count us in.”

Our message to prospective supporters is a simple one: while funds raised in regular Spring and Fall appeals go to MDNA’s daily operations, Capital Campaign support goes to building up our all-important investment funds. Why? Because that is what will guarantee another 75 years of home-based skilled nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other home care to our neighbors dealing with every conceivable illness and injury. We’d love to share more about our story, and to count you among our Capital Campaign contributors. Please reach out to us directly!
