Tampa Bay COVID Update!  May 10, 2021
The COVID-19 Regional Re-Opening Dashboard tracks the critical and official public health metrics that guide Tampa Bay residents and policymakers to safely re-open our economy. It’s produced by the Tampa Bay Partnership.

Case growth rates in Tampa Bay decreased this week, to 990 per day over the 14-day period ending May 9, versus the 1,202 reported last week. At 5.59%, Tampa Bay's positive testing rate over the past week remains below the 10% threshold outlined in state and federal re-opening guidelines, and decreased from last week’s rate of 6.54%. Statewide, the positive testing rate was also below the 10% threshold and fell from 6.02% to 5.19%. The 7-day rolling average of Tampa Bay patients hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19 decreased by 13.1% in the past week and, as of Sunday, 609 such patients were hospitalized. To date, 1,548,803 Tampa Bay residents – an estimated 38.8% of the region’s nearly 4 million adults – have completed their COVID-19 vaccine sequence.
While some early space-tourism flights may start in Texas or New Mexico, Florida will be at the forefront of the industry; it already has four commercial spaceports and more are coming.
Employment in the hospitality and leisure sector of Florida has increased the last few months, though not as much as one might think.
For seasoned Florida natives, your memory isn’t shot. Florida is hotter on average in 2021 than decades past.
May 9 marked the anniversary of when part of the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapsed into Tampa Bay after being struck by a freighter during a storm, sending seven vehicles and a Greyhound bus into the water and killing 35 people.
Political committees seeking to change the constitution are now limited to $3,000 individual contributions until their proposal is approved for the ballot — a limit that could have made it impossible for medical marijuana and an increase in minimum wage to get before voters.
