Override Election 2022

On Tuesday, May 10, 2022 the Cave Creek Unified Governing Board adopted a resolution for a fifteen percent (15%) maintenance and operation budget override to be included in this coming election. On November 8th (or before) we will each cast our vote and hence share in the decision on this override. The final outcome on this override will affect our children's education and us as taxpayers.

Clicking HERE will provide the override information needed for voting. Our children are our future. This is an important decision, and so it behooves us to be well-informed for our vote..

Kudos to Pomodoro!
Cave Creek’s very own Pomodoro Italian Grill & Seafood Restaurant was recently voted “Most Authentic Italian Restaurant” in the Phoenix area by the Italian reality TV show Little Big Italy. What an honor!
BUT... those of us in Cave Creek aren't in the least bit surprised.

CAVE CREEK HOSTS WATER FORUM INCLUDING STATE, REGIONAL AND LOCAL EXPERTS
~ Kathryn Royer

The Town of Cave Creek held a special 2-hour Water Forum for our community on September 13 at Town Hall. The Forum was held because the main source of surface water supplies for both Cave Creek and Desert Hills is from the Colorado River, which is in a prolonged drought. Cave Creek’s allocation of Colorado River water is delivered to us by Central Arizona Project (CAP).

In August, the United States Secretary of the Interior declared the first-ever Tier One shortage on the River, which has resulted in a substantial cut to Arizona’s water allocations. This year, Arizona’s agricultural users will feel the impact. If a Tier 2 shortage is declared in 2023, as currently projected, Arizona cities, towns, industries, and Indian tribes will be affected.

Council Member Kathryn Royer coordinated the event with Town staff featuring subject matter experts from the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR), CAP, and Cave Creek. ADWR’s Kristin Johnson covered the state’s role in Colorado River management, $1 billion dollars of legislative support for infrastructure improvements, impacts of the drought on groundwater supplies, and forecasts for elevations in Lakes Mead and Powell. CAP Board Secretary Alexandra Arboleda, and Ken Seasholes, CAP’s Manager of Resource Planning and Analysis, spoke on Colorado River shortage impacts to CAP water supplies, water banking, conservation, innovation and diversification, and its 2023 water supply outlook.

The program concluded with Cave Creek Utilities Director Shawn Kreuzwiesner and external legal water advisor Michelle Van Quathem discussing Cave Creek’s water resources, shortage and drought planning, and conservation efforts to protect our decreasing water supplies from the Colorado. Questions and answers were included as part of each segment.

“Back Next Month”
In Memoriam

The Town of Cave Creek
extends sincere condolences on the recent passing of
Dr. Evan Dishion & Kathleen Patterson
The Marshal's Corner
Greetings from the Marshal,

What a terribly sad month we have had. I am heart-broken at the two recent losses in the Spur Cross Recreation Area. Our community has suffered the loss of two wonderful individuals who both had loving families and so much to offer our world. My condolences to both the families.

Through adversity, we also realize our strengths. I want to personally thank EVERYONE who came out and helped look for our lost neighbor. It is through living and working in a small community that we see people step up and help out when needed. So many members of our community volunteered to help search, provide water and other resources to the search and rescue teams as well as provide an area for tired and hot staff and volunteers to simply cool off and rest. Cave Creek is a strong community made up of neighbors looking out for neighbors. A huge thank you to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and numerous volunteers as well as other agencies who participated in this huge endeavor.

We will begin experiencing the return of special events these next few weeks. Please come on out and see your neighbors. Drive safely with the annual influx of visitors and people coming to our special events. Please be PATIENT when driving through town; some visitors like to drive slowly and enjoy the sites. Honking your horn and yelling does not typically help situations. Watch for pedestrians in our crosswalks please.

Stay safe,
Marshal Stein

What’s Cookin’ at Our Library?
“Sauces and More!”

As always, our Desert Foothills Library is cooking up more than books! In fact, a 5-class culinary series of demonstrations and tastings will happen in their Arizona Room starting October 22.

What to expect? Chef Ador, executive chef and owner of Ador Cuisine, will don his “toque” (white chef cap) and apron and then, watch his knife dance as he creates culinary magic in his own unique fashion. Titles in his 5-class “Sauces and More!” culinary series are “Pink Lady Ginger Pico De Gallo,” “Tantalizing Parsley Hummus,” “Chef Ador’s Grandma’s Salsa Recipe & Indigo Goddess Salsa,” “Vinaigrettes & Sala,”and “No More Dried Chicken Breast or Overcooked Veggies.”

These classes will cover knife skills, kitchen techniques, creating interesting flavor combinations, as well as simple kitchen techniques to improve your cooking skills.

Chef Ador's Saturday afternoon “Sauces and More!” classes will run October through December. For a list of class dates, times, content and registration information click HERE. Signing up for all five classes upfront will include a $50 discount but must be reserved directly with Marjorie at the library. Email her at msmith@dfla.org with your name and phone number so she can process the discount. Seating is limited; register early and not be left out of this tasty event!

Town Permits Corner
Reminder: Permits Needed

As we move into fall and the weather begins to cool, we will start seeing the return of various events throughout town. This is a good time to remind everyone that to do business within the Town of Cave Creek boundaries you must have a Cave Creek business license.

For any person, corporation or partnership based within town limits carrying on any trade, business, calling, profession or occupation, or any contractor conducting business within the town limits, an annual business license is required. The fee for an annual business license is $50.00 and can be renewed annually on December 31 of each year. If vendors will be in town for three (3) or fewer days in the calendar year; they may apply for a temporary business license. The fee for a temporary business license is $10.00 per day for up to three days.

A special event permit is required if the event meets at least one of the following conditions: 1. The event requires off-site parking and/or displaces on-site parking, such as when the parking area, or a portion thereof, is being utilized for purposes other than parking; or; 2. The event is located upon or uses any part of public property, including Town right of way or private easements dedicated for public use. The fee for each special event application is $100.00 and applies to both profit and non-profit applicants.

For additional information, please call Town Hall at 480-488-6600 or you can obtain permitting information on the Town website by clicking HERE.

Old Glory Barbershop

Meet Caelyn Fluegel, barber and proprietor at the newly opened Old Glory Barbershop in the Cave Creek town core. It’s a barbershop “Offering all of your barbering needs with an Old School meets New School vibe,” says Caelyn who was born and raised in our neck of the woods, or desert in our case. You’ll find Caelyn is the gal with the smile behind the shears. Her services include haircuts, shaves, and beard and mustache trims. Walk in, get a trim, and say hello. “We love our customers,” says Caelyn.

The Meading Room

The Meading Room at Cave Creek is our newest location and features tons of tasty concoctions that mother/daughter team Barbara & Kylie are creating down at The Meading Room Sonoita. Our Cave Creek location is a small (but mighty) tasting room with unique and colorful decor, plenty of patio seating and all right on Cave Creek's main drag. Come in and sample one of the most unique and tasty alcoholic beverages out there...mead! Made with raw honey and always fresh ingredients, you'll find our mead to be a wonderful homage to the long history of honey wine, but with a modern twist. Order by the glass, do a flight, or even buy a bottle to-go. We'll be featuring an ever-evolving list of drinks, as well as a few of our permanent fixtures. Stop in. We’d love to get to know you.

Caligos

You may have noticed a new name, “Caligos,” in place of A Couple of Green Thumbs. We’ve separated the landscape company and the retail store. The landscape company is still A Couple of Green Thumbs, but the retail business is now called Caligos. Nothing has changed except for the name. We continue to offer a wide variety of pots, wind chimes, garden art, home accessories, indoor plants, succulents, cacti, and plenty of gift items. Please call 480-488-7463, if you have any questions. - Marie Robart

Side Note: Caligo is a genus of very large butterflies of tropical America.

Ink Therapy
Cave Creek

Since our founding in 2004, Ink Therapy has grown from humble beginnings into one of Arizona’s well-known tattoo shops. Led by world-renowned artist, Sirris Slay, Ink Therapy has now opened a third location in the heart of the desert in beautiful Cave Creek.

Growing up in a small town, choosing Cave Creek for our new location allows us to embrace the small-town vibe as well as bring a little urban spin to the community. Ink Therapy Cave Creek is home to its very first art gallery & retail store. Incredible art pieces created by our very own ‘best of the west’ artists are displayed throughout the gallery alongside prints, branded apparel and more in our store.

We look forward to our newest venture here in Cave Creek and more importantly meeting our locals and making this our home. Please join us for our Grand Opening on November 5th.

A New Museum Season Begins!

The Cave Creek Museum is back for the 2022-23 season.

This year, you’ll find enhanced exhibits in the History Wing and a refreshed and reorganized Archaeology Wing. In the auditorium, you’ll be wowed by the beautiful florals of local artist Beth Zink from October to January and then the stunning photography of Jerry Sieve from January to May. The auditorium table has the Feast of Rocks returning with all new tempting “dishes.” Look, but don’t taste! Also, not to be missed is the amazing and engaging AZ Gold Mining Experience every 2nd Saturday of the month.

Then, on October 12th, the Town of Cave Creek will be presenting the museum with a brass plaque and the honorable designation of “Local Landmark.” Yes, it’s yet another new season at the Cave Creek Museum with so much to shout about and so much to see!
Above: Local Landmarks plaque to be presented to the museum on October 12th.
Happenings Corner
September 7: Spur Cross Plaque
On September 12, 2000 the Citizens of Cave Creek voted for a tax to pay their share of the purchase of Spur Cross Ranch. Last year a monument was erected at the entrance to Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. The monument was the idea of George Ross, who also paid for the time capsule it contains. I gathered items to put inside the time capsule and Paul Diefenderfer created the monument. The monument was to have a plaque on it and on September 7, 2022 Paul Diefenderfer completed that job, just in time for the 22nd anniversary of the preservation of SCRCA!
