The Sand Paper A Newsletter from The Sandy Hook Foundation

Dear Friends of Sandy Hook,

What a glorious "local summer" we've been having on Sandy Hook as we continue to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook Unit as a National Park.

We are grateful to the 1,000+ people who came out for the Beach Concert Bash on September 10 and all of the supporting businesses and individual sponsors. It was a spectacular day!

This Sunday, October 2, we will be back at Lot E to cheer on runners in the Jersey Shore Half Marathon race, hosted by the Shore Athletic Club with The Sandy Hook Foundation named as this year's charity partner.

Our friends at Gateway remind us that as we trade beach towels for blankets, "many plants have already given up their vibrant spring flowers for a delicious array of fruits. Early fall at Sandy Hook provides some unique varieties when beach plums all over Sandy Hook become ripe and ready to harvest. These miniature plums are deep purple in color and tart in flavor. The plums can be made into beach plum jam, a little-known delicacy prepared by dedicated foragers all over the New England coast. Another Sandy Hook delight, the rose hip, requires a little more patience. A perfectly ripe rose hip is an elusive delight. Rose hips should be picked directly after the first light frost of the year; wait for a heavy frost, and your harvesting window will close."

Enjoy Sandy Hook, it's your park in all seasons!

The Sandy Hook Foundation Appoints

Peter S. Izzo to Its Board of Trustees

The Sandy Hook Foundation welcomes Peter S. Izzo (Pete) to its Board of Trustees. As a member of the board, Mr. Izzo will be responsible for advancing resources and efforts of the Foundation and supporting its mission to enhance the visitor experience at Sandy Hook.

"His business experience as a private wealth manager at Merrill Lynch, combined with his unique local perspective, will strengthen our role within the community and enhance our partnership with the National Park Service,” says Patricia Alcaro, President of the Board.

“Given its resources, Sandy Hook provides unique opportunities for a variety of activities in a safe and healthy environment that is our national park. We are so fortunate to have a national treasure like Sandy Hook in our backyard. My family enjoys nature, and we feel strongly about contributing our time and effort to make Sandy Hook the best it can be, both for families today and for generations to come. For that reason, I am honored to participate in The Sandy Hook Foundation as a new member of the board, and I look forward to helping further its mission to protect, preserve, and strengthen Sandy Hook’s natural and cultural resources,” says Pete, who is a Monmouth County native and lives in Rumson with his wife and two young children. Welcome, Pete!
