UROP will help you explore academic and career interests through research mentorship, all while learning to think in creative and innovative ways. UROP also offers the opportunity to engage in research outside of your proposed, or declared, field of study.
Incoming student/current first-year student deadline: June 1, 2024.
Transfer student deadline: July 1, 2024.
To learn more about UROP, please attend our last information session which will be held on May 22nd at 2:00 pm in HSF 3008 and via Zoom. We also have a pre-recorded info session on our website!

We had the honor of interviewing two former UROP students, Ashley Powell and Michelle Gunn, two current UROP students, Christina Dugazon and Nailah Lee, and their mentor, Dr. Omni.
Under the guidance of Dr. Omni, previous UROP students Ashley Powell and Michelle Gunn researched the omnipresence of Black Joy. To begin, they compiled a database of literature reviews on Black Joy, specifically on Black women. The research mentees then wrote literature reviews exploring both peer-reviewed articles and non-peer-reviewed articles based on Black Joy experiences. Under Pen & Inc. at Florida State University, they developed a website to house their research, Dr. Omni’s research, and all other events that had to do with Black Joy (Blacktivate Joy https://blacktivatejoy.create.fsu.edu/). Alongside the website, they conducted a survey with several black organizations on campus to gauge how Black students at FSU saw and defined Black Joy, and how these organizations brought them Black Joy. The two presented their findings at the 2023 Undergraduate Research Symposium; however, they didn’t stop there. They participated as panelists in the 2023 International Symposium on Autoethnography and Narrative (ISAN) and returned this year as moderators. Following this, the two helped with a publication about Black Joy which is now officially internationally published. Both Ashley and Michelle now serve as research interns for Dr. Omni.
This year, two current UROP students, Christina Dugazon and Nailah Lee, also conducted research under Dr. Omni for their project. These two studied the reverse engineering of the “#CapeBreak:Strong Black Women Phenomena.” Their research is art-based as they explored the intergenerational dynamics, the psychological influence of nature, and the emotional well-being of Black women. To do this, the two collected secondary data and analyzed a variety of academic journals. Then, they watched the 11-minute film, "Soles of Black Women," featuring the participants, before the interviews. Following this, the two interviewed black women for a perspective on their experiences as black women and being “strong” and dealing with the stigma of being strong 24/7. They were able to take the transcripts, analyze the data from them, and put that into a spreadsheet to find connections in the verbiage they used and how to use that in their research. Christina and Nailah recently presented their findings at the 24th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, as well as the 2024 International Symposium on Autoethnography and Narrative (ISAN) as panelists. However, they aren’t finished yet; Christina and Nailah are creating an ethnographic performance that they will be presenting in June at a festival in Jacksonville, Florida.
After hearing about their research and the strides these students are making in the study of Black Joy under Dr. Omni, we were able to ask them a few questions about their experience with undergraduate research.
