Looking Back at 60 Years of
Community Living Essex County: Harold Zinck
Harold in 1982
Harold in 2021
Celebrating Community Living’s 60th year of supporting people with an intellectual disability in Essex County, it is fitting to look back at people who have been involved with the organization for a long time.

Harold Zinck, 73, has been supported by Community Living since 1982. Harold receives Supported Independent Living supports and has been living on his own in Amherstburg for over twenty years.

Harold is described as “a music buff, a movie buff, a book reader, and a historian,” by the people that know him. Harold enjoys watching movies, reading, traveling and collecting old movies, book series, and DVDs of TV shows. One place Harold enjoys traveling to every year is the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. When he’s with support staff, he likes to quiz them on movie trivia and what has been going on in the news.

When Harold first became involved with Community Living Essex County, he and four other men moved into the agency's second 24 hour support home. At the time it was known as the Amherstburg Training Home. These five men lived together and took care of a dog they named Snuggles who was a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle. “We were the only two that could handle taking Snuggles for a walk,” Harold said, remembering when he and a housemate, Tom, would tend to Snuggles. When he was not taking care of Snuggles, he and his housemates would work at their own cleaning business called A’Burg Services. Harold was always first to arrive to work at six in the morning before the others. Community Living helped support A’Burg Services at first, but eventually Harold and his coworkers were capable of running the business themselves and did so for over 15 years. Harold is now happily retired.

When asked about how he feels about his life, Harold says he’s happy. He’s happy for the things he’s been able to do and what he’s able to do now. He’s also happy for the support Community Living Essex County has given him.
Josh and Steph Visit Point Pelee
Josh and Steph enjoyed a beautiful day at Point Pelee National Park.

Point Pelee National Park is open every day from 6 am to 10 pm. It is located at the southernmost point of the Canadian mainland.

Experience nature like never before. Each spring, view flocks of migratory birds, joined in autumn by waves of vivid Monarch butterflies. In winter, wander the trails in solitude and catch the natural ice formations. In summer, bask on sandy beaches. Whether you cycle, paddle, or hike Canada’s second smallest and most ecologically diverse national park, you’ll be immersed in an unforgettable eco-adventure.
Ensemble: A Resourse for Families
Ensemble is a parent-directed resource for families caring for a child with a disability that provides support from birth through adulthood. The name, Ensemble, is French for “together” and was chosen for the strength and resiliency found in the connections built between families and within the community.

Ensemble inspires possibilities for children by promoting family leadership so that families thrive and become active members in the community.

Ensemble was founded in 2000 by two moms whose lives have been affected by their children’s diagnosis of a disability. These moms understood the importance of connecting to others as the first step in helping parents cope with the challenges of raising a child with a disability.

We regret to announce Kelly Runnallls, Parent Consultant with Ensemble for many years has left her position. We thank Kelly for her many contributions to Ensemble and wish her all the best.

Benefits of Virtual Health Care
If you had a doctor’s appointment during the pandemic, there’s a good chance it was over the phone, or on a video call, that practice is expected to continue in the future.

Canada has been slowly transitioning towards virtual health care for a number of years, but the lockdowns and states of emergency that came with the onset of the pandemic accelerated the process.
