May 2024

Dear HCP4,

As a former teacher, I know how exciting the end of the school year is for both students and teachers. Now, in raising my three daughters, and being a working mother, I know the need for safe and structured ways to keep children engaged during the summer.

This summer, Precinct 4 is introducing children-focused programming to our community centers that is both educational and engaging.

We have partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston, YMCA of Greater Houston, and Young Audiences Arts for Learning Houston to bring free summer camps and arts workshops to Precinct 4 community centers. These all-day camps are designed to promote learning, creativity, physical fitness, and social development for children up to sixth grade while giving working parents peace of mind.

In addition to the summer camps, we will be offering a variety of free classes where children can learn dance, chess, archery, phonics, volleyball, and so much more all summer long as part of Precinct 4’s free programming. Find an interesting class at a community center near you by visiting https://cp4.harriscountytx.gov/Events

Our programming and opportunities for community involvement extend to parents as well. This month – and all summer – we have plenty of chances for everyone to learn and share their ideas. Our second listening session of 2024 will be May 4 at Nottingham Elementary School from 9 -10:30 a.m. I look forward to listening to your concerns and sharing the progress we are making throughout the Precinct.

I also invite you to attend the Bayland Community Workshop on June 15 to share your ideas on how we can enhance that center. The community workshop will also feature our Meet the Heroes event, where residents can learn how to be prepared for hurricane season from real first responders and families can explore all the emergency vehicles used during major storms.

Our parks and community centers are open throughout the summer. My team and I want to build places and programming for all residents – especially children and families – that are educational, fun, and enriching. I encourage you to visit our parks, community centers, and free community events to take advantage of the opportunities to make lasting memories and lasting impacts on your Precinct.

All my best,

Lesley Briones

P.S. As we reflect on a successful school year and look forward to the well-deserved break, I want to congratulate Precinct 4’s first bus design contest winner, Emma Cardenas. Her beautiful illustration now graces one of our Precinct 4 buses, which transports residents around Harris County. The contest is ongoing, and I encourage any K-12 students attending school in a Precinct 4 ISD to participate.

P4 Spotlight

In times of crisis, heroes emerge, and the Precinct 4 Road and Bridge team exemplifies that spirit. Commissioner Briones extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated men and women who swiftly sprang into action to address the aftermath of the tornado along South Mason Road. Your unwavering commitment to serving the community is truly commendable, and your rapid response in the face of adversity embodies the essence of public service.
