NYOS Garden Project

Join Us in Growing Together: Introducing the NYOS Garden Project!

We're thrilled to introduce the NYOS Garden Project, an initiative aimed at fostering outdoor learning and collaboration for our students. Our vision includes creating a vibrant outdoor space where students can engage in hands-on learning experiences, cultivating vegetables and flowers in raised beds.

To make this vision a reality, we need your support. We're calling on parents like you to volunteer your time and expertise to kickstart and sustain this invaluable program. Whether you have a green thumb or simply a willingness to lend a hand, there's a role for everyone:

  • Planning: Help chart the course for the garden's development.
  • Building: Get your hands dirty in constructing raised beds.
  • Sourcing: Assist in procuring materials to support the garden's growth.
  • Ongoing Support: Provide ongoing care by watering and tidying the garden.

Your involvement will not only contribute to the success of the NYOS Garden Project but will also create lasting memories and experiences for our students.

To sign up for volunteering or learn more about how you can get involved, please complete the Google Form linked below:

PAX Host Family Shares Their Story

I never thought I’d open my home to a stranger. Family? Certainly. Friends?  Neighbors? Mostly…. But a stranger in my home? Here’s our story. I work at NYOS and I was at the WinterFest sometime in November. I was approached by Audrey Handlesman, a representative of PAX, an international student exchange organization. Was I interested in hosting a foreign exchange student?  Surely, it's too late this year? Oh, they have half-year programs? As the conversation moved on it became a very real possibility and it was so simple! In just 3 weeks we had completed a home visit, background checks, and the online application process. We were shown some applicants who were interested in coming to the USA for just half a year. We managed to set up the spare room and welcomed a student before the end of 2023.

Let me tell you a little about our ‘Import Child’, Arne Fuchs. Arne (Arnie to some) got the word he had been accepted just 2 weeks before he packed and boarded the plane in Frankfurt. He was in 10th grade, and so he was registered here for the 10th grade. His English is perfect and he gets along well with my son, Max. Arne wasted no time getting into a friend group in school and being active in the BSU (Black Student Union), he performed poetry reading with the BSU for the whole school. He earned top grades in all of his classes, even getting perfect exams in Physics. His goal was to study US History and the US Government. He even got invited to Jr./Sr. Prom! Arne has fit into my home like a long-lost cousin. He is bright and funny, participating in family dinners by making some of his favorite crepes for dessert. He plays games with our son and even feeds and walks the dog at night. He doesn’t have a pet at home, so I was worried my 80-pounder would be intimidating. He has invited friends over for an Easter brunch, with each one cooking a dish to share in my kitchen. He decorated the table for his guests. He does his laundry, sets the table, takes turns with chores, and participates in family outings and activities. Arne has set the bar very high for our next ‘Import’.

But that is the PAX commitment to the host families and the students. Each application is screened, qualified, and language tested to make the adjustments seamless. The Students present a full health history, and food, religious, social, and even pet preferences before they are shown to the host families. Being a host family is simple: we provide a home, transportation to school, and food. Everything else is up to the student’s family. PAX takes care of all the arrangements; we just showed up at the airport with an extra seatbelt in the car. Our commitment to house and feed this youth ends in June, just 2 short weeks after the last day of school. It’s over too soon for us, we'd like him to stay longer, of course, he is welcome to come back to Texas anytime, to visit his friends and now his American Export family, the Kents.
