Marine Ecological Atlas of the Pribilof Islands

In collaboration with Audubon Alaska, Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Ecosystem Conservation Office, and the City of St. George Island, The Marine Ecological Atlas of the Pribilof Islands explores the ecological importance and rich biodiversity recognized in the region. Combining local and indigenous knowledge with spatial data obtained from a variety of sources. A co-production approach was used to identify the species and processes that are culturally significant for the Pribilof Island communities.

Call for Abstracts for the virtual ArcticNet Annual Scientific Meeting 2021 is now open!

The ArcticNet Annual Scientific Meeting will be held virtually from December 6-10, 2021. We are pleased to be hosting a wide range of Topical Sessions covering a breadth of Arctic research, including in the natural, social, and health sciences. This year’s conference abstracts will be published by Arctic Science Journal in the ASM2021 Book of Abstracts. We are accepting abstract submissions until August 29, 2021. View the list of topical sessions, find the guidelines, stay up-to-date about the conference and submit presentations or e-poster abstracts on the ASM2021 conference website.

Unsustainable Arctic Shipping Risks Accelerating Damage to the Arctic Environment

The economic and environmental pros and cons of melting Arctic ice creating shorter shipping routes through the polar region are weighed up in ground-breaking research from UCL experts in energy and transport. They conclude that policy makers must properly assess the environmental trade-offs and costs in addition to the commercial benefits and opportunities in Arctic shipping.

Team at Northern Arizona University Awarded $2m NSF Grant to Teach Virtual Explorers About Permafrost and Arctic Climate Change

Scientists at Northern Arizona University, Arizona State University, the Arizona Geological Survey at the University of Arizona and the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado Boulder have been awarded almost $2 million from the National Science Foundation to develop a virtual reality teaching tool called Polar Explorer. In this web-based, immersive environment, undergraduate students will explore polar environments in the Arctic to learn about permafrost from their laptops, desktops or mobile devices.

Unique Arctic Bumblebee Subspecies Found on Wrangel Island

The subspecies was initially believed to be solely associated with the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago in the Arkhangelsk Region. This had been reported on the website of the Russian Federal Research Center for the Comprehensive Study of the Arctic. However, Mikhail Berezin, the Head of the Moscow Zoo’s Entomology Department, newly found the subspecies on Wrangel Island located over 3,600 kilometers away from the bumblebees believed natural habitat, Arctic.ru reports.

Arctic Security Dialogues IV | Progress on the Department of the Air Force Arctic Strategy

The Department of the Air Force released its first Arctic Strategy on July 21, 2020. Signed by the Secretary of the Air Force, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and Chief of Staff of the Space Force, the Strategy noted that the “Arctic is among the most strategically significant regions of the world today.” Over the past year, the Department of the Air Force has worked to optimize air and space capabilities throughout the Arctic region in support of Department of Defense objectives. What progress has been made? Which obstacles and opportunities have arisen? The Wilson Center’s Polar Institute will host this event to facilitate a roundtable discussion with distinguished Department of the Air Force leaders and explore paths forward in implementation of the Arctic Strategy.

2nd Symposium on Polar Microbes and Viruses

Organizers announce, that due to the coronavirus outbreak, the 2nd Symposium on Polar Microbes and Viruses has been postponed to 2022. This symposium will bring together molecular microbial ecologists specializing in different organism groups to share our latest results and discuss methodological problems, as well as future prospects in the field, including practical international collaborations. The environmental focus will be on cryospheric environments including sea ice, glaciers, ice sheets, and permafrost, but excellent research in other polar environments is also invited. The methods to be discussed will focus on 'omics' techniques, ranging from single cells to metagenomes, but research using additional methods is encouraged as well.
