Oscar Macias is a proud Mexican immigrant who has been working for the Health Department for the last twenty-two years. In his current roles, Oscar serves as a liaison with government agencies and non-profit community-based organizations (CBOs) to design, implement, and evaluate culturally and linguistically appropriate HIV/STD/HCV prevention programs among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, transgender people, and people who inject drugs within the Latino/x/e community. Recently, starting in early 2020, Oscar’s work shifted to support the City’s response and recovery COVID-19 efforts by making sure the work included an equity lens to the populations most impacted by health disparities. Given his expertise in mobilizing and uplifting community response, Oscar was invited to join the MPX Department Operations Center to increase access to the JYNNEOS vaccine for populations at risk with a special focus on QTBIPOC communities. Oscar serves a pivotal role in community education, prevention, and equitable access to the vaccine at multiple sites across San Francisco.
