Reminder of the Youth Protection Requirements for the Normandy Camporee.

Participants

·       BSA-Registered Adult Leaders – Current BSA Youth Protection Training (YPT) is required. This applies to all BSA programs – Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, etc.

·       BSA-Affiliated Adults (i.e. Families/Guests of BSA Youth and Adults) – Completion of YPT is required for those staying at the campground (in bungalows and camping), and highly recommended for all adult participants. If not staying at the campground, at a minimum, you must review “How to Protect your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide.” Those without YPT must be escorted by Trained Adults when in the vicinity of Youth. This is especially important in the campground areas.

·       Other National Scouting Organization (NSO) Adults – Completion of either YPT or WOSM-offered “Safe From Harm for Volunteers or Staff” training is required.

Two-Deep Leadership will be enforced at all times. As always, Scouts will follow the buddy system.

Important: Unit Leaders or Registration Contacts should collect YPT certificates from all Adult Participants and be ready to produce them upon check-in at Camping Omaha Beach. The protection of our Scouts is paramount to a safe and memorable experience.

Hospitality Hut

Just next to the Trading Post in Vierville-sur-Mer, we have an open area where the Hospitality Hut will be situated. Nicknamed “Café N’ Chat”, the hut will be open during Trading Post opening hours Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is the place to chat and discuss whatever you’d like to share with your fellow scouters and/or the hospitality team.

The Hospitality Hut will provide space, shelter, tables and benches and permanently FREE COFFEE for all visitors. There is only one condition: you must buy a Normandy hospitality mug to be offered endless refills of coffee in the Hospitality Hut!

There will be (electric) branding equipment, to decorate your mug with an 80th Anniversary logo, making your own lasting impression (at least on the mug) of the Normandy Camporee. The price of this future collector’s item is only $8.

We hope to meet you all across a warm cup of Joe and enjoy your company at the Normandy Camporee.

Pointe du Hoc

Pointe du Hoc

The World War II Pointe du Hoc Ranger Monument is located on a cliff eight miles west of Normandy American Cemetery, which overlooks Omaha Beach, France. It was erected by the French to honor elements of the American Second Ranger Battalion under the command of Lt. Col. James E. Rudder. During the American assault of Omaha and Utah beaches on June 6, 1944, these U.S. Army Rangers scaled the 100-foot cliffs and seized the German artillery pieces that could have fired on the American landing troops at Omaha and Utah beaches. At a high cost of life, they successfully defended against determined German counterattacks.

By mid-1944, German forces manned formidable defenses along the French coast. Of concern to the Allies were German 155mm artillery positions on Pointe du Hoc. They could wreak havoc on Utah and Omaha Beaches. Lt. Col. James E. Rudder, commanding the 2nd Ranger Battalion, received the mission to land at 6:30 a.m., scale the 100 foot cliffs, and disable the German positions. Lt. Col. Max F. Schneider’s 5th Ranger Battalion would follow and reinforce them.
