PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Happy Early Spring from Impact100 DC!
First off is an invitation to join Impact100 DC as a new member – and, if you are already a founding member, to pass this invitation along to friends and colleagues! It really is a terrific idea to join now, and here’s why: Joining as a 2021-22 member means that even though your membership contribution – and your vote – apply to the grant that will be awarded in 2022, you will be able to participate in all member events during the whole of 2021 (including the Meet the Finalists event in June) and not have to renew your membership until the fall of 2022. And that means many added months of involvement in Impact DC with your ‘21-’22 donation!

We are fully into the grant application and review season, with applications due on March 8th and Focus Area Committee work beginning on March 11.  Someone recently described our grants leadership team as “earnest.” Sometimes that word is used a bit pejoratively (i.e., humorless), but that can’t be the case here because we have some really funny people on our board. And I love the true meaning of the word: serious in intention, purpose or effort; showing depth and sincerity of feeling; impassioned; heartfelt. I think these words characterize the quality of our membership as well. An astounding seventy Impact DC members will participate in the grant evaluation process – almost three-quarters of our founding membership!

Our grants team has worked tirelessly over the course of many months to put together a process that reflects our mission and vision and that is equitable and transparent. They have also developed a detailed stewardship program to guide our relationship with the grantee as they implement their project. Onward with the earnest work of Impact100 DC!!

IMPACT100 DC MEMBERSHIP CORNER
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Sisters Maggie Sivon Allen and Julia Sivon Murillo

Maggie Sivon Allen is the Head of Publicity for Amazon Publishing where she leads the public relations team for Amazon’s trade publishing business. She and her husband moved from Brooklyn to Washington, DC in 2019 and welcomed a baby boy in 2020. Maggie spends her time chasing her crawling baby around the house, walking Capitol Hill with her rescue dog, practicing yoga, doing CrossFit, and reading and talking about books.

Julia Sivon Murillo is the Senior Director of Custom Programs at Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies where she partners with organizations in the DMV to develop customized learning experiences for their employees. Julia previously lived and worked in Quito, Ecuador, where she met her husband Christian in 2009. They moved to Washington, DC in 2016 and have enjoyed being close to Julia's family and eating out at the many delicious Latin American restaurants.

Why Maggie & Julia joined Impact100 DC:
The DMV is an international, political, and inspiring area that comes with its own needs and challenges. We both played field hockey while we were growing up in the suburbs of DC and used to say that "sticks in a bundle are unbreakable." We know that joining a team of 103 smart and thoughtful women will result in more meaningful change in our community than what the two of us could do individually. We also joined because, full disclosure, our mom, Ellen Sivon, is a founding Board Member of Impact 100 DC!
