Dear saints,

Happy Easter! I always look forward to being able to share that greeting for the first time. It feels like a release of joy, like "permission granted" to say "alleluia" again. I spent some of last week working on a new The Welcome Table liturgy for Easter season. In it we will sing music from around the world, something we will seek to sprinkle into Sunday mornings too. Let's just say that this particular The Welcome Table service has found plenty of ways to say alleluia in word and song. The secret's out: Jesus lives. Love wins.

It seems to me important to recognize that people say alleluia - "God be praised"—in all sorts of languages and in all manner of places because it is all too easy to conclude that the world is not a place where love wins. I preached on Easter Day about a "conspiracy of hope," the divine nudge that comes to us when we encounter the Lord of life, especially when we have that encounter at the corner of death and loss.

Our Holy Week speakers this year encouraged us to be people of hope, even as Israeli families long for loved ones to be returned and Palestinians mourn the loss of family and a place to call home. We might turn our attention to the Ukraine, or to Yemen, the Congo and South Sudan and feel the same sense of heartbreak at what we see there. Yet in these places far away, and in our own backyards and daily lives, the calling of the Easter season is to persist in our hopes of a resurrected world.

The world needs your stubborn refusal to give into the conclusion that the sum total of our life together is the way of destruction and death. The God we know in the risen Christ is not only our encouragement to live in the hope that life and love can rise again; that God is also the very ground of that transformation.

Jesus lives. The grave cannot hold love. I invite you to live that audacious dream this Easter season and proclaim it in word and deed, Alleluia anyhow.

Peace,

The Welcome Table: Sunday Evening Worship Service and Dinner

Sundays at 5:00 p.m., In the Chapel and Ellis Hall

Before your busy week begins, the Welcome Table is a place to join with others and find rest and refreshment. Come to the Welcome Table: a service of music (song and solo instrument), prayer (together and in ways that speak to us individually), and communion. A community dinner for all participants follows the service.

Photos of the Week

Here at All Saints’, we are still basking in the afterglow of our Easter Day worship services! On Easter, we celebrated the paschal mystery: “Alleluia! Christ is risen! The Lord is risen indeed.”

In Ellis Hall, we enjoyed a beautiful all-ages worship service at 9:00 a.m., during which we celebrated Eucharist, heard a sermon from The Rev. Dr. Jennifer McBride and heard the Youth and Children’s Choirs sing “He Is Risen,” among other favorites. This service was noteworthy for being the final Easter service with children and youth music led by Karol Kimmell, our soon-to-retire Director of Children and Youth Choirs. We also took some time to thank one of our vergers, who retired from duty following this service, having served for nine years: Gail Rogers!

In the church, at 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., we worshipped together in services resplendent with flowers, music and parishioners. Our rector, The Rev. Dr. Simon Mainwaring preached a sermon inviting us to bring the wonder of Easter into our daily living. Meanwhile, our adult choir sang an extraordinary array of music befitting the service, including “Jesus Christ is risen today.”

We would love to get to know you! Our community looks forward to you joining us for upcoming services and events throughout the year! For more information visit allsaintsatlanta.org/calendar

GIVING

Planned Gifts, those gifts offered now to be given after your death, are an important part of the generosity we are invited into as a church community. Here is another question in our series of information on planned giving:

Q: I don't have a large estate. Is my gift too small to give All Saints' a planned gift today?

A: No gift is ever too small. We have a well-managed, secure endowment where gifts of all sizes can grow and collectively participate in All Saints' future. We repeat: No gift is ever too small.

“Annual giving, offerings and pledge commitments are essential to the church too. This Lenten and Easter season, please offer your giving to All Saints' Church.”
