Assistance League of Diablo Valley’s TeleCare Celebrates 50 Years of Caring and Compassion!

“Caring and Compassion” Abound for Telecare member volunteers, as well!

What a bountiful, sometimes unexpected emotional return!

Since 1971, member volunteers of TeleCare, a philanthropic program of Assistance League® of Diablo Valley, have been making reassurance calls, Monday through Friday, to those in our community who are home- bound. As the chapter’s longest standing philanthropic program, TeleCare empowers the clients, no matter what their ages, to remain in their homes.

Imagine how TeleCare reassurance phone calls have comforted the homebound clients this past year during the pandemic! Likewise, imagine how the TeleCare daily phone calls have offset overall declining health! Client testimonials offer such insights as…TeleCare makes me feel more secure. It’s my security blanket. I know I’m not alone. What if I fell? No one would know. I know you would call someone… I really appreciate your calls and the sweet cards from Assisteens. Your service brings me relief and helps with the loneliness…You bring a sense of community and a connection… I enjoy your calls. I have family but they live their own lives. I would miss your calls if I didn’t have them. I love the caller. If it weren’t for TeleCare, some of the homebound would never receive phone calls.

Taking a different approach, imagine the gratification TeleCare member volunteers have derived just knowing that their phone calls and heartfelt conversations have lifted not only the clients’ spirits, but their own as well. What a bountiful, sometimes unexpected emotional return!

Let the following testimonials from member volunteers exemplifyIt was surprising to me how spending a mere one half-day per month making TeleCare calls has so enriched my life. In the beginning I felt that I would be making “charity” calls, but in reality it is not that at all. I feel privileged to have conversations with people of different ages, backgrounds, and life situations… TeleCare is a reward that I have enjoyed since 2015! Through the years it has been a personal delight chatting with our wonderful clients; each one slowly becomes a friend. As time goes by, we begin to share stories about favorite books, movies, places where we have lived and where we have traveled, and Family! TeleCare has enriched my life!... I was able to pass along information about getting the covid vaccine shot. And the life-affirming realizations continue.

If you live alone or know someone who does, a daily phone call would be a great way to stay connected with life and make new friends. TeleCare activities include attending an annual holiday party to meet fellow clients and member volunteers face to face, as well as receiving greeting cards from the Assisteens®, an auxiliary where kids learn to participate in a community service at a young age. So make that call to get you or someone you know connected.

For more information about TeleCare, please phone 925-934-0901. To learn about Assistance League of Diablo Valley’s other philanthropic programs, primarily funded by the Way Side Inn Thrift Shop in Lafayette, please visit this website: www.assistanceleague.org/diablo-valley.

Yet we still need more volunteers to help additional abused and neglected children in foster care.

And, how long are we expected to take these precautions?

Lafayette Garden Club
New Lafayette Garden Club Commemorative Cookbook

The Lafayette Garden Club, founded in 1970, conducts annual fund-raising projects to further its goal of community beautification and education. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the group wanted to create something special that would honor its members and be a lasting treasure for family and friends.

The Club decided to create a cookbook that included its members’ favorite recipes with an emphasis on fresh and healthy foods. In addition, the artwork on the cookbook covers and recipe divider pages reflects the work of several of its own floral artists.

It took a village of volunteers to pull this cookbook together during most of 2020 and completely on Zoom! Having sold out the first printing of 450 cookbooks, we have ordered a second printing! To order one or more books (at $20 each) please contact: Tracy Walklet at twalklet@comcast.net.
Lend a Hand to the Lafayette Historical Society

All of us, at some time or another, have probably wandered past the Lafayette Historical Society, located on the ground floor of the Library on Golden Gate Way. And some, during “non-COVID times” may have even visited the Society’s archives and history room and learned something they didn’t know about Lafayette’s past.

And who knew that the Society also maintains operates the City’s very first fire engine? Old Betsy as she is known, is a 1919 Model TT Fire Engine. Yes, that’s Old Betsy in the Library’s parking garage window.

The Society raises operating funds by a combination of its membership dues, newsletter sponsorships, book sales, the not-to-be-miss “Breakfast with Santa” event, and through the popular “Speaker Series.” Due to the COVID pandemic, the Society’s history room has been closed and the Speaker Series canceled. It also appears that the “Breakfast with Santa” will also have to be postponed this year. All that is our way of saying that the Society really could use the community’s help right now. If you have a chance, take a look around the Society’s Website where you can listen to a collection of oral histories from many notables Lafayettans, including Bill Eames, Larry Blodgett, Ed Stokes, Steve Falk, Jon Frank, and Jack Marchant. And, if there’s anybody who knows how to work on a Model T, or knows how to drive one, the Society could sure use your help with Old Betsy. Visit the Society’s membership page now to find out how you can become an active member of this esteemed local gem. You can also call (925) 283-1848, or email Mary McCosker, LHS’s President, at lafayette.history@comcast.net.

Lafayette War Veterans, Inc. - Lafayette Veterans Memorial Building

Since opening its doors on May 1st of 2005, the Lafayette Veterans Memorial Building has become a very important community asset not only for Lamorinda but the greater East Bay as well. Prior to COVID, the building was in use at least five days a week for events of all types - from Weddings, Mitzvahs, Corporate meetings to Celebrations of life. Though the building is owned by Contra Costa County, funding to operate the building is entirely provided by the revenue from the various events, and management is the responsibility of a Board of 8 Veterans and a full time Building Manager.

The COVID restrictions have had a devastating effect on the financial viability of the Veterans Building. Prior to COVID, the building had a fairly healthy financial reserve but as the restrictions have continued that reserve has been nearly depleted despite the receipt of a PPP loans in the spring and significant belt tightening by the Board. The Veterans Board firmly believes that once the restrictions are lifted we will be able to resume normal operations and the challenge is to raise enough money to remain current with necessary expenses.

For the first time in its history the Lafayette Veterans are asking the community to consider supporting us with a charitable contribution that will sustain us until we can open our doors, Please note that all contributions are tax deductible as we are a registered 501(c) 19. Checks can be sent to: Lafayette Veterans, PO Box 501, Lafayette CA 94549.
Lamorinda CERT: Help Needed to Test New Wildfire Mitigation Technology

The Moraga-Orinda Fire District is continually looking for ways to improve wildfire safety within our communities. Fire professionals and water system operators generally agree that residents should not turn on their residential sprinklers and allow them run during a wildfire event. Doing so wastes precious water and reduces water pressure for responding fire crews.

But what if Fire Departments had the ability to initiate cycling residential sprinklers in specific areas in advance of an approaching wildfire? The water use would be minimal and the application could be targeted to specific zones around vulnerable structures; embers would be less likely to fall on receptive fuels and fire intensity around the structures would be reduced. The Moraga-Orinda Fire District has been working with the “Change++” team of students at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee to develop an application to do just this. The application is ready for a community-wide test that’s been scheduled for Saturday, May 1st. We need around 50 Lamorinda residents with internet enabled Rachio sprinkler controllers to help with the test.

The Lamorinda Spirit Van

We have reopened the Lamorinda Spirit Senior Transportation Program. We can now take Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda passengers to appointments, errands, and grocery shopping. Please email mbruns@lovelafayette.org if you would like to know more about becoming a volunteer driver, have a good driving record and 3-4 hours available every week or two.

We are very grateful to our Spirit Van drivers for providing free pick-up and delivery service for our passengers for the past year.  Email dispatch@lovelafayette.org or call 925-283-3534 if you need something picked up and delivered, need to reserve a ride, or want to learn about utilizing GoGoGrandparent: an Uber/Lyft type of service that doesn’t require a smart phone in order to request a ride.

Please keep us in mind when you are considering organizations you would like to financially support. You may send your tax-deductible donation payable to the City of Lafayette to: Lamorinda Spirit, Lafayette Community Center, 500 St. Mary’s Road, Lafayette, CA 94549. Please write: “Lamorinda Spirit” on the memo line. Your support makes a huge difference to our success especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when we were not charging for van rides. We are very appreciative of community support!!!

Update from The Park Theater Trust

TPTT has just announced that it is in contract with the sellers of the Park Theater property and is on its way to fulfilling its mission to revitalize the iconic theater into an accessible and inclusive, community-centered cinema, arts and culture hub. TPTT plans to immediately launch its $8mm capital fundraising campaign to finalize the acquisition and begin the rehabilitation of the theater. Anticipated reopening is late 2022, the Park Theater’s 81st birthday.

Shuttered since 2005, reopening the Park Theater remains one of the top priorities of citizens, local business, and the City as they work to create a vibrant downtown. The Park Theater Trust grew out of a grassroots task force comprised of citizens and community organizations called together in the summer of 2018 by the city of Lafayette. The Trust was formed as a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation in the second half of 2019 and received its official IRS tax-exempt status in February 2020. It has been the recipient of several generous grants from the Lafayette Community Foundation (LCF), private donations, and, most recently, a $2MM pledge from Miramar Capital, developer of the newly approved Lafayette Lane mixed-use downtown development.

Over the past two and a half years, TPTT has looked at various operating models of small community cinemas around the Bay area and the country. This research has determined that for Lafayette, success and sustainability is achievable via a partnership between a nonprofit owning the Park to protect it for future generations, and then leasing it to a for-profit operator who will offer movies but also develop a robust calendar of diversified programming that attracts multigenerational interest and participation.

With its recent announcement to the Lafayette City Council, TPTT now plans to reach out to the broader community to share architectural renderings, answer questions, and fundraise. For more information, please visit www.parktheatertrust.org.

White Pony Express - All of us taking care of all of us!

White Pony Express is a local nonprofit that rescues fresh, surplus food and high quality clothing and distributes it to those in need.

During the month of June, they will conduct their “All of Us Auction" where they will offer vacation getaways, gift baskets, designer clothing, high end jewelry, spa treatments, restaurant certificates, and more! The money raised will support the White Pony General Store and a needed boutique-on-wheels (aka: a truck). This boutique-on-wheels will allow WPE to deliver clothing, shoes, diapers, and emergency supplies directly to the people that need – but can’t afford – these items.

If you can support WPE with a donation for this auction (i.e., gift certificate, gift basket, etc.), please contact Steve Spraitzar at steve@whiteponyexpress.org for the details.
