Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I announced bribery charges against nine taxi dispatchers this week for allegedly accepting cash in exchange for letting some cab drivers bypass often long lines to pick up passengers at Kennedy International Airport. Four of the defendants are accused of accepting more than $1,000 in bribes and are charged with first-degree commercial bribe receiving, a felony.

The victims of corruption, without fail, are honest, hardworking men and women.

As if the challenges of making a living as a yellow cab driver were not already enough, the cabbies at JFK had to overcome greed and corruption in their effort to put food on the table for themselves and their families.

My office conducted a lengthy and in-depth investigation into these allegations and our message is clear: corruption will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such activities will face the consequences.

Upholding integrity and fairness in the taxi industry, particularly at major transportation hubs like JFK Airport, is crucial for the thousands of residents and visitors who rely on taxis to get around this city.

I thank the Port Authority Inspector General's office and the Taxi & Limousine Commission for their crucial assistance in this case.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney
