Dr. Gil Stork will be the guest speaker for our October monthly dinner. Dr. Stork recently retired as CEO of Cuesta College. His connection to aviation is that in 1960 he was a football player for Cal Poly and riding in a chartered twin-engine Artic Pacific C-46 that crashed on takeoff from Toledo, Ohio killing 22 people including 16 of his classmates. He will explain how the aircraft accident influenced his life.

The plane climbed 100 feet before the left engine failed, and then the right one. Take-off had been attempted in heavy fog with minimal visibility. Investigators later reported that the plane was 2,000 pounds overweight.

The Mustangs came back the next year for a six game season. The team didn't fly to a road game for nine years after the crash.

P2V-5F Neptune Comes Home To Roost

Estrella Warbird Museum's newest addition to our fleet of historic military aircraft, a Lockheed P2V-5F Neptune, arrived August 8th.  Fresh off the front lines during a tenure as a fire bomber/tanker, this former US Navy Aircraft was retired from flight and will now call home - Estrella Warbirds Museum. It's most recent history was with Neptune Aviation based in Missoula, Montana. Their fleet of Neptunes have served the western United States well fighting fires from Montana north to Arizona south and all states west. Neptune Aviation origianlly acquired a fleet of P2V-5 aircraft after they had been replaced by the US Navy in 1984 with the P3 Orion.

Lockheed designed the P2V Neptune for use a maritime patrol and anti-submarine warefare aircraft. This aircraft was built in 1954 and began its Naval service at NAS Barbers Point, HI with VP-4. A complete list of units to which it was assigned can be found on this page. Museum founder Gary Corippo has long sought to acquire this aircraft for the museum. Now we can see why he has been anxious to acquire this type of aircraft. This Neptune was just retired from flight status after reaching maximum airframe hours.

Woodland Auto Display Updates

It's been a rumor for some time now, but if you read it here, it must be true!  I heard that the Woodland Auto Display will be undertaking a new expansion! For those whom have visited the facility and viewed the incredible display of historic racing vehicles, you know it is one of the best of it's class on the West Coast!  But it's also full!  Plans are underway for yet another expansion to house even more vehicles.  Stay tuned! More to come. I can't wait!

During the past several months, Richard Woodland has kept busy traveling the country and promoting the Estrella Warbirds Museum and Woodland Auto Display at several large racing events in addition to having multiple race cars on display at a Southern California university art gallery and on display in other museums.  We are honored to be home of one of the finest historic racing automobile collections in the western US.

If you love automobiles, race cars and meeting people, there is no better place to volunteer some free time as a docent at the Woodland Auto Display.  It's a great place to share your knowledge and help spread the excitement to people from all over the globe.  If you are interested, please complete contact us here.

Coming Out From Under Wraps
TA-4J Restoration Crew

EWM  Restoration Crew has outdone themselves once more! On September 17th, they rolled the TA-4J Skyhawk out of the restoration hangar.  What a beautiful job they've been  hiding for the last six months!

Final touches are being done which could not be completed while in the hangar. The aircraft is actually taller than the main hangar door!  Removing the canopy and a portion of the tail, the crew was able to lift the front end in order to lower the rear and slide it in/out of the hangar.  This is an aircraft who's wings were chopped off with a hacksaw before it was shipped in pieces to the Estrella Warbirds Museum.

Redball Express Motor Pool

The Redball Express Motor Pool at Estrella Warbirds Museum is a collection of vintage U.S. military vehicles from 1941 through 1945 assembled by Herman Pfauter, a collector and restorer of these vehicles since his teenage years. The original Red Ball Express is the name given to the famed truck convoy system that supplied Allied forces moving quickly through Europe after breaking out from the D-Day beaches in Normandy in 1944.  In order to expedite cargo to the front lines, trucks emblazoned with red balls followed a similarly marked route that had been closed to civilian traffic.

During September, two more WWII vintage vehicles were added to the collection, a 1941 Diamond Wrecker and a 1942 2.5 ton Studibaker 6x6.

There's always something of interest for everyone to see at Estrella Warbirds Museum!
