Message From Leadership

The Department of Radiology now enters a new exciting phase of its successful and fascinating history. The growth experienced under Dr. Rofsky’s leadership in the four pillars of our Department - clinical, teaching, research, and administrative - is unprecedented and supported by the foundation set by another giant in radiology, his predecessor as Chair of the Department, Dr. Robert Parkey. Their passion for innovation has led our Department to be one of the most innovative in the country, with a critical emphasis on improving patient outcomes, but also acknowledging the importance of comradery and wellbeing in the workplace.


Beginning March 1st, I have the privilege and honor to serve you as the interim Chair of the Department of Radiology. My efforts will be directed to ensure the department continues to thrive during this period. We should not put the Department on standby nor should we shy away from the audacious initiatives that characterize what we do. Let us use this newsletter to highlight some of the amazing developments in your area. We want to learn about your novel clinical programs, new teaching ideas, creative administrative processes, and fascinating cutting-edge research proposals. Please share those with our Communications Coordinator, Marissa Wathern-Tovar.

Karuna Raj, M.D.

Program Director, Diagnostic Radiology Residency

Karuna Raj, MD is an Associate Professor in the Division of Neuroradiology, and has been the Program Director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency since October 2021. From 2020-2021, she served as Associate Program Director of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency, and has also served as faculty of the Clinician Educator Resident Track since 2018.  

 

Dr. Raj joined the UTSW faculty in 2017. Prior to this, she was Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Her passion and dedication to education stem from a desire to make a positive impact on the next generation of clinicians. She strives to create innovative ways of teaching in order to keep learners engaged. In 2018, through funding received by the Southwestern Academy of Teachers and the UTSW Office of Medical Education, she developed and implemented an online curriculum for fourth-year UTSW medical students on the appropriate use of imaging. This work garnered tremendous support and accolades both at UTSW and at the state and national levels, including the 2020-2021 Innovation in Medical Education Award given by the AAMC.  

 

Her duties as Program Director include all administrative aspects related to the residency program, yearly recruitment, and maintaining accreditation by the ACGME. Dr. Raj shared that beyond her role as residency director, she sees herself as a mentor and confidante to all of the residents with whom she works, in order for each resident to reach their full potential. During residency interviews, she often gets asked by applicants about which aspect of the residency program she is most proud of. Though there are many, she shares that what stands out the most in her mind is the confidence that residents develop during their training here at UTSW, and the preparedness to take on any type of job in the future. She hopes to continually improve the residency training experience through feedback, mentorship, and innovation.  

 

Outside of work, Dr. Raj says that spending time with her family and friends brings her the most joy. One of her favorite things to do is plan trips with her family to explore new destinations and experience new cultures. She also enjoys the outdoors, including hiking and spending time at the beach, and cooking new recipes.

Received the 2023 American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) Resident/Fellow in Radiology Executive Council Award for, Non-invasive assessment of white matter tissue microstructure using multi-shell diffusion MRI in preclinical and prodromal stages of dementia.

It’s amazing how time flies! I joined Radiology in June 2022 and it’s almost been a year since I have been with the department. Although I am new to the department, I am not new to UTSW. I initially worked with UTSW in the Neurology clinic from 2012-2015. From there, I ventured off to another healthcare institution and worked in various leadership roles for about 7 years before making the decision to return to UTSW. I enjoyed patient care but wanted to use the knowledge and experience I have gained in another arena of healthcare. As the events coordinator, I enjoy meeting and working with different people within the department to help create memories that will leave a lasting impression.


During my time outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family and traveling. My immediate family consist of my husband and two teenage sons. We love to take extreme road trips and travel to states far from Texas in a short number of days. Along the way we make it a point to stop in each state we drive through, whether it’s at a gas station or to see a specific landmark.


I am grateful to be a part of Radiology and please feel free to reach out when planning your next department event. 

The Good Stuff


Alexis Mojica, Sr. Admin Assistant II in the Community Division, created the team "Breathing for Jamie" with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, in honor of her aunt Jamie Mojica.


"Jamie was more like my big sister. We grew up together, lived together, and fought together. She lost her battle to C.F. in 2009 and is the reason why I continue the fight to help find a cure. Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening, genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. There are close to 40,000 children and adults living with C.F. in the United States who struggle to breathe every day. My team hosts fundraisers throughout the year, attends walks, and helps the C.F. Foundation bring the community together. Our goal is to raise awareness in hopes that one day C.F. will stand for Cure Found."

Grant Opportunity


The Grants Department is proud to partner with Radiology’s Diversity Collaborative Committee to identify more diversity-focused funding opportunities. We’ll continue to promote these in the newsletter, on our RADPoint page and in the Quarterly Funding Opportunity emails.

This month we’d like to highlight the NIH Diversity Supplement. This opportunity is open to PI’s with an Active NIH award with at least 18-24 months remaining.

 

Deadlines:

  • NCI upcoming supplement deadline is 3/31/23. Submit your Intent to Apply by 3/3/23.
  • NIBIB is accepting rolling applications until 5/31/23

  • The Radiology Resident/Trainee Activity Form is now Live! The purpose of this form is to log and record notable accomplishments, recognitions, activities, events, photos, new engagement or participation in committees, publications and awards, social media mentions etc. The education office and department creative services teams will record all form submissions in a cumulative manner, share activities upon request, and utilize this form as a way to create a database that will assist you in updating your CVs. NOTE: It is also linked on the homepage of Medhub under the resources/documents section.

Honoring the Legacy of Robert W. Parkey

Our Radiology community is mourning the loss of former Chair, Robert W. Parkey, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Radiology. In 1977, Dr. Parkey was appointed Chair of the Department of Radiology. Under his leadership, the department grew in size and technical capacity. He recruited and retained talented faculty, fellows, residents, technologists, and staff. With a keen eye for innovation, Dr. Parkey successfully advocated for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) clinical unit, allowing UT Southwestern to be one of the early academic sites to engage in research and clinical care on a commercial instrument. His scientific discoveries helped develop nuclear scanning techniques to diagnose, localize, and measure acute heart attacks noninvasively.  Throughout his 33-year tenure as Chair, Dr. Parkey embraced the rapid development of medical imaging. His contributions were essential to the development of the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Facility, the Mary Nell and Ralph B. Rogers Magnetic Resonance Imaging Center, Zale Lipshy Pavilion – William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, and the Bill and Rita Clements Advanced Medical Imaging Building. In 2016, the Department of Radiology established the Robert W. Parkey, M.D. Distinguished Professorship in Radiology in his honor.

On behalf of the Rad Diversity Committee, please join us virtually on Friday, March 3, 2023 at 6:30pm for the viewing of Black Men in White Coats Documentary. This documentary dissects the systemic barriers that prevent Black men from becoming medical doctors and the consequences on society at large. If you missed the UTSW-hosted screening earlier this month, this is a great opportunity to watch this impactful documentary.

January 25-26, 2023

UTSW Radiology & Imaging Services departments hosted UTSW's first MRI Safety Symposium, with guest speaker Emanuel Kanal, M.D., Professor of Radiology and Neuroradiology at University of Pittsburg. More than 100 professionals attended the two-day event.

Celebrating Super Bowl LVII

Mama Donna Kelce's Game Day Cookie Recipe


It isn't often that two brothers get to pursue the same dream and actually fulfill the dream. Super Bowl LVII saw brothers, Jason (Eagles) & Travis Kelce (Chiefs) played on the NFL's biggest stage against each other. Their proud mother Donna represented both son's equally wearing a home made split jersey and matching sneakers. She continued her beloved pre-game cookie tradition at the Super Bowl. Here is her special recipe!


  • Melt one cup of salted butter in microwave
  • one cup of brown sugar
  • one cup of cake flour
  • one cup of all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • two large eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • white chocolate and milk chocolate chips
  • let the dough sit overnight in the refrigerator
  • Preheat 375, Bake 8-10 minutes, Rest on a cooling rack and Enjoy!
