85 Years of Memories: Monthly Throwback

In January of 1996, we signed a contract with Bob LaFleur to build a pool for our campers. That March the guys tore out the tennis court to prepare for the April installation. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a pool or our $38,400 deposit back from LaFleur. In the years to come, after numerous court cases (with other victims), we learned Bob was a seasoned conman. His mode was to give references, show pictures of beautiful pools, ask for half down, cash the check, and then declare bankruptcy. He then changed his company name only slightly and reopened his pool company providing great service to some customers. The unsuspecting happy customers would keep giving recommendations, and Bob would declare bankruptcy at least once a year.

How did we get our pool? A couple of fishermen knew the owner of Barrington Pools and told him our story. He felt bad for us and assured us this was not how he did business and offered to help us. We all pooled our savings to come up with another down payment on a pool, and Memorial Day Weekend, 1997, our current pool was opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony. It was a lesson learned, and in the end a happy ending!
