GIVE ONLINE

Ministry Month Continues

This week we focus on more of our Prayer - Give - Serve Ministries - primarily those ministries that focus on our outreach in the community - as well as a few extras that were not included in prior weeks. Our Love, Active Caring, and Servanthood flow from our care of one another out into the wider community - in Knoxville and far beyond.

Yesterday, you received an email with video reflections from those who are already participating in these ministries, sharing where they find joy in their service – and inviting you to do the same. Prayerfully consider where you might find your joy. You may sign up for any of this week's highlighted ministries HERE.

Christian Formation & Education for All

Begins Sept. 11

9:30 - 10:15 AM

The fall program year takes another leap forward on September 11 when Christian Formation and Education for all begins.

As you may know, the adult Lectionary Class has been in session for several weeks now, meeting at 9:30 am in the church library. But, on September 11, the Children's Rotation Sunday School gears back up as well as the Adult Henslee Hall Class. In addition Sinead, our Youth Minister, has some fun plans for Youth Christian Ed with the beginning of Coffee & Conversation in the Youth Suite.

Be on the lookout for more information in our weekly e-news and on the website

Women's Bible Study

The Women’s Bible Study group is gearing back up! Facilitated by Mother Elizabeth, this group will begin on Wednesday, September 14 at 5:45 PM. For the first 4 -6 weeks, we’ll meet on Wednesdays but switch back to our usual Tuesday meeting day after that.

We will continue meeting via Zoom each week but on the first Wednesday (and then first Tuesday) of each month, we’ll gather in Henslee Hall with an option to join via zoom if you can’t join us in person.

All women are invited to be a part of this Bible study group; if you’d like to get the weekly email containing the zoom link, please email the office at [email protected] and we’ll get you added to the list.

Book Group

Thursday, Sept. 15

6:00 PM

Please join us for Book Group on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022 at 6:00 pm (please note that, for only the month of September, we are meeting on the third Thursday). We will be reading Gilead by Marilyn Robinson--synopsis:

"Gilead is an account of the memories and legacy of John Ames as he remembers his experiences of his father and grandfather to share with his son. All three men share a vocational lifestyle and profession as Congregationalist ministers in Gilead, Iowa."

In October, we will be reading The Matrix by Lauren Groff and in November we will be reading Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Rotation Sunday School Teachers & Helpers Needed

We are hoping to get back to full time Rotation Sunday School in September. Many of our teachers have taught for 15 or more years and have decided it is time to step back.

I need at least 6 teachers each Sunday to be able to have Rotation Sunday School. If you enjoy children and want to learn and receive more than you give or teach, let me know. The lessons are explicit and easy to follow. You can also choose an area of interest: legos, games, cooking, computer, drama. You do not have to commit for the whole year, but can commit to teach a 2 week rotation several times a year.

Also, if you feel unsure about teaching, you can serve as a helper in the room. We require 2 adults in each class, so serving as a helper to the teacher is a great need and help. Please let me know at [email protected] if you are willing to help out. I would so appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you! - Ann Backus

Computer Gurus Needed

If you love computers and games, please volunteer to help in our Rotation Sunday School Computer lab. So many people are afraid of the computers and games, but this is one of the children's favorite workshops and I really need the volunteers to get this workshop up and running.

If you don't want to teach, I can work it out so that there is another teacher to do the lesson and your job would be getting the computers running and explain how to play the game. You can commit in 2-3 week intervals which would cover a rotation. Please let me know at [email protected] if you can help us get this going for our children who have missed so much during the covid break.

Thank you! - Ann Backus

Youth News & Events!

A NOTE FROM SINEAD!

I am so excited to resume our Good Sam Youth Programming for Fall 2022-23.

We have all kinds of new ideas and events this fall, and I hope that you will find ways for your family to engage in the offerings. Please reach out to me ([email protected]) with questions, concerns, barriers to attendance, etc. I am here to help!

  • Club 45 is for youth in grades 4/5. I am looking forward to our monthly events (lunch and activities following church)

  • Good Sam Youth (grades 6-12) will meet 2-3 times a month, mostly for youth lunches following worship, but they will also have other activities like Operation Backyard service days, serving meals at Tyson House @ UTK Sunday evenings, etc.

We will have Diocesan youth activities, which provide our youth a chance to connect with others from across Knoxville and East TN. These events include Happening (high school retreat), New Beginnings (middle school retreat) and various other retreats and events for youth. **The first one is Sept 9-11th for middle/high schoolers at Grace Point!

We will also have a few mission trips, both overnight and weeklong, that are typically open to youth 12+.

We will do Confirmation class for 9-12th graders over the course of the year, with a few meetings, designed to fit your busy schedules while providing a meaningful experience.

There will also be fundraising opportunities to help increase the funding we have for youth programming and mission work.

A very preliminary schedule of some highlighted events includes:

  • Sept 9-11: ETNYouth Fall retreat (grades 6-12) at Grace Point (https://www.etnyouth.org)

  • Sept 11: Coffee & Conversations will begin 9:30-10:15 for youth grades 6-12, and for parents of children/youth (both in Youth Suite rooms), Christian Education for all ages is running concurrently.
  • Club 45 - 11:30-1 in youth suite

  • Sept 18: Coffee & Conversation 9:30-10:15. Youth Lunch 11:30-1 in youth suite
  • KEY (Knoxville Episcopal Youth)- 6 PM at Tyson House

  • Sept 25: Coffee & Conversation 9:30-10:15. Youth Lunch 11:30-1 in youth suite

  • Oct 30: will be a Trunk or Treat party after worship!

  • Nov 20: Rise Against Hunger event after worship.

  • Dec 27-Jan 1: Winterlight Retreat for High schoolers @ Kanuga (https://www.kanuga.org/our-programs/youth-conferences/winterlight/ )

And SO MUCH MORE!

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Sinead

Cash in the Plate

The Cash In The Plate For Sept. 4 goes to Rainbow Day Camp.

This week's cash in the Plate is directed to the Rainbow Day Camp, a place for LGBTQ+ children and youth to have fun and connect with others. It is an affirming place where they can explore their identity during their 2022 fall break. Campers will experience a mixture of traditional camp activities (such as equine, climbing tower, nature and more) in addition to activities focused more on exploring and celebrating each camper's unique identity. Thank you for your support.

You can make an online cash plate gift to the cash in the plate on the Good Sam online giving page. There is an option on the giving page to give to the "Cash in Plate". As always, you may also send a check to Good Samaritan. (Please designate that it is for "Rainbow" in the memo line).
