Training Workshop for Legal Experts in Central Africa

RCC WAC Africa co-organized a training workshop for environmental lawyers in central Africa in Kigali from 30 April to 3 May 2024.



The event resulted in the launch of the Network of Environmental Lawyers Experts of Central Africa (REJEAC), a network that can support countries in preparing and participating in UN Climate Change negotiations and implementing the Paris Agreement. The training was organized in partnership with the Economic Commission of Central African States (ECCAS), the Legal Response International (LRI), and the Africa Group of Negotiators Expert Support (AGNES).

Pathway to NDC 3.0: Regional Webinar for West and Central Africa on Challenges and Experiences 

On 25 June, RCC WAC Africa organized a webinar for partners and WAC African countries to exchange knowledge and share experiences, including the challenges faced and opportunities in preparing their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), in collaboration with UNDP and the NDC Partnership.



The webinar involved 61 participants and took stock of where countries are in their NDCs 3.0 preparation to identify regional and national needs. It also facilitated the provision of best practices for ambitious and implementable NDCs 3.0.

 Validation Workshop on Togo's LT-LEDS Vision 

From 18 to 21 June, RCC WAC Africa participated in the National Workshop to validate the national vision of Togo's long-term, low-carbon, and climate-resilient development strategy.



The workshop analyzed and validated the deliverables associated with the development of an LT-LEDS Vision for Togo. The workshop brought together members of Togo’s NDC Committee, representatives from various sectoral ministries, private sector actors, technical and financial partners, civil society organizations, and local authorities.

 Virtual Training on Climate Change and

Gender Transformative Approaches

RCC WAC Africa facilitated the participation of 76 women and gender climate change negotiators from West and Central Africa in an ongoing online training organized by the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES).



The training runs from 17 June to 10 July and aims to strengthen the capacities of national gender and climate change focal points in Africa. The Regional Lead of the RCC WAC Africa, supported by colleagues from Bonn, is scheduled to deliver a module on climate change thematic areas during this training.

 Climate Governance, Diplomacy and Negotiation Leadership Programme 

On 26 June, RCC West and Central Africa contributed to the ongoing Climate Governance, Diplomacy, and Negotiation Leadership Program training (Cohort XIV) organized by the AGNES.



The ongoing cohort includes close to 200 Students. The Regional Lead of the RCC WAC Africa delivered a one-hour module focusing on the Paris Agreement, especially on NDC and LT-LEDS, the outcome of the Global Stocktake (GST), and ongoing processes such as the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance and the NDCs 3.0.

Private Sector Engagement in NDC Implementation  

From 25 to 28 June, RCC WAC Africa participated in a Regional Workshop on Private Sector Engagement and Climate Finance in Implementation of NDCs of seven francophone countries in West Africa.



The workshop was held in Abidjan and organized by UNDP with public and private sector representatives. The event aimed to improve understanding of NDCs, access to climate finance by the private sector, and to promote better involvement of the private sector in financing and implementing NDCs.

Nigeria Hosts SB60 Side Event on

Advancing Energy Transition  

On 12 June, Nigeria hosted a side event with IETA, ICC, UNDP, and Neyen Consulting at the SB 60 Climate Conference in Bonn.



The event discussed Nigeria's energy transition framework, the private sector's role in carbon markets, and the future of carbon markets, including independent crediting programs and the 6.4 mechanism for inclusive low-carbon development. RCC WAC Africa supported the RCC Global Lead's participation at this event.

Online BTR Workshops: Reporting on Support

Needed and Received in BTRs

During the three-day online Biennial Transparency Report (BTR) workshops, participants will be introduced to an overview of the ETF and key provisions related to reporting information on support needed and received under the Paris Agreement. Participants will work on hands-on exercises and later report back and exchange reflections on the preparation of the BTR chapter on support needed and received.  

  • Asia and Pacific region: 2-4 July, 9:00 CEST (3 days) 
  • Africa and Eastern Europe regions: 2-4 July, 13:00 CEST (3 days) 
  • Latin America and Caribbean region: 3-5 July, 17:00 CEST (3 days)

Call for Climate Consultants

RCC West and Central Africa is currently seeking climate change consultants to advance climate action in the region. If you are interested, please see the following:

 

A consultant or group of consultants is needed to support an assessment study on the feasibility of a regional carbon pricing approach in the UEMOA area.


Consultant needed for activities related to key elements of the domestic context that may influence carbon pricing instrument choice and design in Cameroon under the CIACA project.
