Dear 7th District Community,
We are halfway through 2021, and I am glad that things are looking brighter as COVID-19 positive cases numbers are lowering and vaccination rates are increasing. The latest data is promising and giving us a sense of hope, but we must continue ensuring community members get vaccinated and protected from virus exposure. We are in a new phase: the community recovery phase. In this stage we aim to address the long-term impact from COVID-19 in Cook County and the needs that have been further exposed including access to healthcare, support services for communities and small businesses. I look forward to working together with community stakeholders to address these pressing needs and ensure an equitable recovery.

Anti-Retaliation Ordinance Passes!
|
|
At the June Board meeting, the Board of Commissioners unanimously passed ordinance #21-3171 which prohibits retaliation against any employee who takes leave from work to get a COVID-19 vaccination. Furthermore, if an employer requires employees to be vaccinated during their shift, the employee needs to be compensated up to four hours per dose. The ordinance was sponsored by Commissioner Alma E. Anaya and President Toni Preckwinkle. While Illinois Unidos and various worker centers helped support the passage of the legislation.

Expansion of Gender Identity Options on Documents and Forms |

At the June Board of Commissioners meeting, the Board voted to approve the Gender Inclusive Documents and Forms Ordinance that will expand gender identity options available on Cook County forms. The ordinance will allow for Cook County to be more inclusive, and welcoming. It will go into effect on September 1, 2021. |

American Rescue Plan Act Funding (ARPA) |

Cook County is set to receive nearly $1 billion through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) which will be critical in maintaining public health initiatives and programs as the County recovers from COVID-19. Residential Tenant Landlord Ordinance |

In June, the Residential Tenant Landlord Ordinance went into full effect in suburban Cook County. The Ordinance provides further protections for tenants including anti-lockout. Commissioner Alma E. In partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, State Representative Aarón M. Not only did we engage with constituents but offer them healthy food options to incorporate into their Summer dishes! |

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), more than 70% of adults in Illinois are vaccinated and our offices want to continue to contribute to that! During the first week of June, in collaboration with State Representative Aaron M. Ortiz, State Representative Theresa Mah and IDPH, we were able to get over 100 community members vaccinated from Back of the Yards. |

“The Job Expo main goal is to expose community members at large to various job and career options in our area and city, we want to help connect the community with opportunities. For this year’s expo, we have partnered with Malcolm X College to help bring workshops to all the interested job seekers, from July 28th to July 30th. In addition, on July 31st we will be hosting a full in-person job fair to be the connection between employers and employees who will be participating at this year's expo.”

The Illinois Rental Payment Program is now open!
ILRPP is an emergency rental assistance program designed to support households in Illinois that are unable to pay rent due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tenant-led application period for the Illinois Rental Payment Program is now open! You may start your application at https://ilrpp.ihda.org.
Tenants have until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 18 to complete their portion of the application. Tenants will also be provided a pathway to complete their application should they have unresponsive landlords.

FEMA will begin providing financial assistance for funeral expenses incurred after Jan. 20, 2020 for deaths related to coronavirus (COVID19) to help ease some of the financial stress and burden caused by the pandemic. The policy was finalized today, and FEMA is now moving rapidly to implement this funeral assistance program nationwide
- The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or qualified alien who incurred funeral expenses after Jan. 20, 2020 for a death attributed to COVID-19.
- If multiple individuals contributed toward funeral expenses, they should apply under a single application as applicant and co-applicant. FEMA will also consider documentation from other individuals not listed as the applicant and co-applicant who may have incurred funeral expenses as part of the registration for the deceased individual.
- An applicant may apply for multiple deceased individuals.
- The COVID-19-related death must have occurred in the United States, including the U.S. territories and the District of Columbia.
- This assistance is limited to a maximum financial amount of $9,000 per funeral and a maximum of $35,500 per application.
- Funeral assistance is intended to assist with expenses for funeral services and interment or cremation.

La Agencia Federal para el Manejo de Emergencias (FEMA, por sus siglas en inglés) comenzará a brindar asistencia económica para cubrir gastos fúnebres incurridos después del 20 de enero de 2020 a consecuencia de fallecimientos relacionados al coronavirus (COVID-19) para brindar algún alivio en la presión y carga económica que esta pandemia ha causado. La redacción de la política culminó hoy y ahora FEMA comenzará a implementar el programa de asistencia por gastos fúnebres rápidamente a nivel de toda la nación
- El solicitante deberá ser un ciudadano estadounidense, nacional no ciudadano o extranjero cualificado que haya incurrido en gastos fúnebres después del 20 de enero de 2020 a consecuencia de algún fallecimiento atribuido a COVID-19.
- Si más de una persona aportó para cubrir los gastos fúnebres, deberán solicitar bajo una misma solicitud como solicitante y co-solicitante. FEMA también tomará en consideración los documentos suministrados por otras personas que no figuren como solicitante y co-solicitante pero que hayan incurrido en gastos fúnebres por la persona fallecida por la cual se solicita la asistencia.
