Bill S-211 poised to catch construction with its guard down


Mandatory child labour and anti-slavery reporting requirements are coming to Canadian companies with Bill S-211 , ready or not.


Federal Bill S-211 came into force on Jan. 1, 2024, but the deadline for the first required report is May 31, only a few weeks away. Time is short for those qualifying under the legislation.


S-211 acts as encouragement for companies to enhance the “S” (Social) in their ESG policies. By improving labour source disclosure, it attempts to ensure supply lines into Canada for all sorts of goods available for distribution here are free from forced labour of any sort.

160 Front Street West redefining Toronto’s skyline through collaboration and innovation


In the heart of Toronto’s financial district, a project is reshaping the city’s skyline and setting new standards for architectural excellence and sustainability. The project at 160 Front Street West, driven by a collaborative effort among key stakeholders, showcases resilience and innovation in overcoming unforeseen challenges.


Fine Line International managed the BIM coordination process for all mechanical services under Modern Niagara, which included HVAC and plumbing systems, producing various types of drawings, including shop drawings, coordination drawings, installation drawings, and fabrication drawings.

Blue Jays unveil new 100 level seating bowl as part of multi-year renovations


The Toronto Blue Jays continue the renovation of Rogers Centre from a multi-purpose stadium into a ballpark-first venue, unveiling the reimagined 100 level seating bowl designed specifically for baseball viewing. Combined with the popular Outfield District which opened last season, the new seating bowl continues modernizing the fan experience at Rogers Centre for both long-time and new fans. The first chance to enjoy the newly renovated 100 level seating bowl is during the opening homestand from April 8 to 17.

Ontario Association of Architects reveals 2024 Design Excellence Awards winners


The Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) has announced the 10 winners of its 2024 Design Excellence Awards. They will be celebrated at this year’s OAA Conference, Housing: Pushing the Envelope, which will be held in Niagara Falls this May. The OAA’s biennial Design Excellence Awards program celebrates the work of Ontario practices anywhere in the world. This year’s collection features a diverse range of building types, including awe-inspiring community centres and learning institutions, a striking lakeside residence, and performing arts venues in Sudbury and New York City.

Toronto dominates latest Q1 2024 RLB Crane Index


Toronto continued its dominance in 2024 in Rider Levett Bucknall’s biannual Crane Index for 14 North American cities. RLB’s recently released Q1 2024 crane index indicated Toronto has almost four-and-a-half times more cranes active on construction sites than the second-place city.


The report covers cities where RLB has offices. In order, listing the city and the number of cranes counted, Toronto was tops with 221; Los Angeles, 50; Seattle, 38; Calgary, 20; Denver, 14; Boston, 14; Washington, D.C., 12; Honolulu, 12; Las Vegas, 10; Portland, 9; San Francisco, 8; Phoenix, 7; New York, 5; Chicago, 3. Toronto was down 19 cranes from the last count.

Labour shortages impacting construction growth


Demand for construction workers has surged, leading to rising labour costs and increased project delays, reports global construction consultant Linesight in its latest Construction Market Insights report for the Americas.


The report reveals that the construction industry has shown resilience with robust growth in the data centre and high-tech industrial sectors offsetting the decline in the commercial and residential sectors. While commodity prices have eased, several challenges persist, including higher finance costs as a result of elevated interest rates, as well as challenging supply chain timelines for MEP equipment and labour shortages.

Feds Announce Reforms to Apartment Construction Loan Program and Launches Canada Builds


Amidst rising living costs, ensuring every Canadian has the opportunity to thrive has become a challenge. The quest for sustainable housing, particularly for younger generations, is urgent. Recognizing this, the Canadian government announces steps to address the housing affordability crisis.


Budget 2024 introduces transformative measures aimed at increasing the pace of housing construction. These include a substantial $15 billion enhancement to the Apartment Construction Loan Program, targeting the development of over 131,000 new apartments within the next decade.

Diamond Schmitt Leading Design for TMU’s School of Medicine


Diamond Schmitt has been selected as the primary consultant to design and plan Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) new School of Medicine. Located in Brampton, the School of Medicine will transform the former Bramalea Civic Centre into a state-of-the-art medical school that will be home to medical students and a primary care clinic. 


To complement the School of Medicine’s design goals of belonging, community and connection to nature, Indigenous design elements will be integrated into the plan. Diamond Schmitt has engaged Two Row Architect, an Indigenous-owned design firm, to consult on the project..
