Young Scientists Shine at Synopsys STC
This week we celebrated the winners of the Synopsys Science & Technology Championship at a ceremony in the San Jose City Hall rotunda!
The annual Synopsys Science and Technology Championship showcases students in Santa Clara County who will become our future scientists, technology experts, engineers, and mathematicians. This regional competition celebrates achievement by middle and high school students supported by their parents, teachers, and schools.
The annual Science Fair, now in its 65th year, is held at the San Jose Convention Center. Hundreds of the area’s students are challenged to go beyond their classroom studies to do independent project-based research. They work independently or in teams to address questions in the fields of Computer Science, Environmental Science, Medicine & Health, Chemistry, Biology, and a half dozen other categories.

I’ve had the honor of volunteering as one of the judges for over 15 years and I am always blown away by what I see being done by these brilliant young scientists. To see such high level, complex research and experimentation, prototyping and testing being completed by local youths fills me with so much pride, awe, and optimism.
In 2023, about 125 6th-12th grade students from San Jose won prizes at the Science Fair. On Tuesday, I hosted over 40 of these winners at a ceremony at San Jose City Hall to recognize their achievements and present them with a certificate from the city. Some were selected to move on to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Dallas. Gauri Todur, who as a winner at the ISEF, spoke to the crowd about her experiences.
These incredible young scientists are given this opportunity by the Santa Clara Valley Science and Engineering Fair Association, a volunteer-run group who puts on the Synopsis Science Fair every year. We thank them for their great work and look forward to seeing these students as they continue on their paths to becoming the engineers and scientists who will push technology forward, solving our society’s most pressing problems and inventing a brighter future for everyone.
