TRIANGLE AI SUMMIT AND FIRESIDE CHAT WITH JOHN CHAMBERS

With Artificial Intelligence continuing to dominate conversations in our region, state and nation, I wanted to host an AI Summit, gathering local government and state leaders, start ups, and investors for a conversation on AI and what it means for our economy, the future of work.

Who better to turn to for advice than one of Godfathers of the Internet Revolution, than my family friend and West Virginia brother, John Chambers, former CEO of Cisco Systems (Now a Venture Investor at JC2 Ventures) During this hybrid event, we will also hear from NC Secretary of Technology Jim Weaver, and Allen Thomas, SBA Southeast Director. (He will be there to talk about loan and captial opportunities for small business and start ups!) We are hoping Secretary of State Marshall will also be able to attend this event! (waiting for her confirmation)

Please register for this event at at https://bit.ly/triangle-ai-summit! For those who want to attend Virtually, a Zoom Link will be sent to all who register.

MORRISVILLE/ CARY CRIME ALERT

Over the past few days, I have received a number of calls about the recent wral article on burglaries in Cary, and I know there have been a number of these events in Twin Lakes community. The Cary Police Department is still investigating these Crimes and as of now, suspects appear to be driving a blue Toyota Corolla and minivan.

To provide a closer connection between the Police Department and our neighborhoods, the Town of Morrisville Police Department can attend HOA meetings upon invitation to discuss crime trends, prevention methods, police response, etc. Common suggestions I have heard in the past from our Department is to Be on the lookout for suspicious activity (Call 911 if you do) make sure your alarm systems are up to date, lock your car doors always, and keep jewelry locked in a safe and not in plain view.

The Chief and our Department would be happy to engage with any HOA that would like him to provide a presentation on these or any other topics. If you would like to set up a date and time for our police department to visit your HOA, please email Chief Acosta at pacosta@morrisvillenc.gov and you can also do the same by reaching out to Chief Terry Sult in Cary at terry.sult@townofcary.org.

Finally, you can also check about setting up a Community Watch Program by visiting https://www.morrisvillenc.gov/government/departments-services/police/community-programs/neighborhood-watch#

I can also coordinate these meetings as well if you need any assistance.

EID MUBARAK

My Eid Message: https://www.facebook.com/steve.s.rao/videos/1145132236641449

I wanted to wish all of my Muslim friends a very Happy Eid Mubarak, which was celebrated on April 9th and 10th.

Also known as the "Festival of Breaking the Fast," Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. It is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, immediately following the month of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr is a joyous occasion characterized by special prayers, feasting, exchanging gifts, and spending time with family and friends.

PARKINSONS MONTH

Parkinson's Awareness Month is observed every April to raise public awareness about Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. This month-long observance aims to educate the public, support individuals living with PD and their families, and promote research efforts to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for the disease. I was honored to present this Proclamation to the Parkinsons Foundation at last evening’s Council Meeting. (will post this picture next week)

Ways to Participate and Raise Awareness:

  1. Educational Events and Webinars: Organize or participate in educational events, webinars, and workshops to provide information about Parkinson's disease, its symptoms, treatments, and management strategies.
  2. Community Outreach: Engage with local communities, schools, and organizations to spread awareness about PD, its impact on individuals and families, and the importance of early diagnosis and intervention.
  3. Fundraising Campaigns: Launch fundraising campaigns or participate in charity events to support Parkinson's research, advocacy organizations, and programs that provide assistance to PD patients and caregivers.
  4. Social Media Campaigns: Use social media platforms to share facts, personal stories, and inspirational messages related to Parkinson's disease. Utilize hashtags like #ParkinsonsAwarenessMonth, #UniteForParkinsons, and #EndParkinsons to reach a wider audience and encourage others to join the conversation.
  5. Collaborate with Healthcare Professionals: Partner with healthcare professionals, researchers, advocacy groups, and patient organizations to create collaborative initiatives, resource materials, and support networks for individuals living with PD and their caregivers.
  6. Media Outreach: Reach out to local media outlets (TV, radio, newspapers) to raise awareness about Parkinson's Awareness Month, share personal stories, and highlight the importance of community support and involvement in fighting against PD.
  7. Advocate for Policy Change: Advocate for policy change at local, national, and international levels to improve access to healthcare services, research funding, and support programs for Parkinson's disease patients and their families.

Key Messages for Parkinson's Awareness Month:

  • Early Detection Saves Lives: Encourage individuals to learn about the early signs and symptoms of Parkinson's disease and seek medical advice promptly for diagnosis and treatment.
  • Quality of Life Matters: Highlight the importance of comprehensive care, personalized treatment plans, and support services to improve the quality of life for Parkinson's patients and their caregivers.
  • Research is Hope: Emphasize the critical role of ongoing research, clinical trials, and scientific advancements in understanding the underlying causes of PD, developing new treatments, and ultimately finding a cure for the disease.
  • Community Support is Essential: Celebrate the resilience, courage, and determination of individuals living with Parkinson's disease, their families, and caregivers. Encourage community members to offer support, empathy, and understanding to those affected by PD.

By actively participating in Parkinson's Awareness Month and engaging in meaningful activities and initiatives, you can make a positive impact, raise awareness, and contribute to the global effort to improve the lives of individuals living with Parkinson's disease.

On a personal note, I did lose my grandmother to this disease and a very close friend of my father. Let us come together to rid the world of this monster!

CONGRESSWOMAN ROSS CONTINUES TO STEP UP FOR WAKE COUNTY!

Insights from Congresswoman Ross: https://www.facebook.com/steve.s.rao/videos/1715853372156927

As we celebrate Green Day, I wanted to give a shout out to Congresswoman Deb Ross. It was great to spend some time with her last week in her Raleigh Office!

The Town of Morrisville to lead community adoption of sustainable practices and technology by setting the example with Town programs and facilities.

Recent examples include development of the Town’s Master Sustainability Plan and installation of solar panels on Morrisville Fire Station 1. The Fire Station 1 project has resulted in a 40% offset of electricity with renewable energy and removal of more than 50,000 pounds of CO2 since April 2021.

The Town requested $250,000 to complete purchase and installation of solar arrays on three of the Town’s largest energy consuming facilities to reduce the Town’s carbon footprint and thanks to Congresswoman Ross, we received this funding last year!

Please visit this site to see the millions of dollars Congresswoman Ross is bringing to invest in housing, infrastructure, sustainability and jobs for our region!

IT IS CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH...

Child Abuse Prevention Month is observed every April in the United States. It is a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of preventing child abuse and neglect. During this month, various organizations, communities, and individuals come together to promote resources, support services, and educational initiatives aimed at protecting children and supporting families.

The theme of this year is Building a Hopeful Future Together.

The goal of Child Abuse Prevention Month is to:

  1. Educate the public about the signs and effects of child abuse and neglect.
  2. Provide information on how to report suspected cases of child abuse or neglect.
  3. Offer support to families and caregivers to help prevent child abuse and promote healthy parenting practices.
  4. Advocate for policies and programs that prioritize the safety and well-being of children.

Throughout the month, you may see events, workshops, fundraisers, and awareness campaigns organized by local child welfare agencies, schools, and community groups. The color blue is often associated with Child Abuse Prevention Month, and you might see people wearing blue ribbons or clothing to show their support for the cause.

It's essential to remember that preventing child abuse is a collective responsibility that requires ongoing effort and commitment from everyone in the community. By raising awareness, providing support, and working together, we can help create safer environments for all children to grow and thrive. Learn More at https://www.preventchildabusenc.org/.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK

Tweener Awards at Durham Bulls Athletic Park!

Last night, I attended the Raleigh Durham Start Up Week Tweener Awards, where we heard from Scot Wingo, founder of the Tweeners. The Triangle Tweener Fund is a Rolling Fund affiliated with the Triangle Tweener List. The Tweener Fund invests in 10-15 early stage companies ('Tweeners'), Triangle headquartered, private companies a quarter with an index strategy. Scot announced that there were 54 tweeners and during the event, we celebrated the Tweeners, who were successfully able to land venture funding or exit. I will share these companies and the 2024 list in my next newsletter.

On a personal note, I am very grateful, along with our start up ecosystem, for Scot Wingo’s dedication and commitment to growing start ups.

Thanks to Scot, the investors of his fund and for Raleigh Durham Start Up for organizing this event! Learn More about Tweener Fund at https://www.tweenerfund.com/

UNC Holi Moli!

I was honored to be the keynote speaker and attend the UNC Holi Moli event with my family at Chapel Hill! It was an amazing event and I was so excited to enjoy the festivities, color, and most importantly, the energy of our college students! Go Heels!

Thanks to the volunteers and the UNC Holi Moli team for their hard work and for inviting me!

Town of Apex Holi Festival!

I was honored to attend the Town of Apex Holi event at Apex Nature Park! Kudos to Council Member Terry Mahaffey for taking the lead on making this event and to Hum Sub for hosting and organizing! I had to leave early, no color for me but it was great to drop in and say hello!

PPA Pickleball Tour Comes to Cary!

Over the weekend, I was amazed to see a packed Cary Tennis Park for the PPA Carvana Pickleball Tournament, the NC Carolina Cup! It was amazing to see the number one players in the world, Ben Johns, and Anna Leigh Waters win their Gold Balls, and to also watch amateurs play. Highlight for me was to catch up with PPA Tour President Brice Morgan, who says that the sport is seeing a 3X growth rate. I am still a tennis player, but am getting the bug to play! Get out to our Morrisville Pickleball courts at Morrisville Community Park and let us know if you would like more!

ECLIPSE WATCH PARTY WAS A BLAST!

It was great to attend the Morehead Planetarium Eclipse Watch Party! I got to see the Eclipse with glasses and met some cool folks. Thnaks to the staff for hosting a great event and for the vendors who attended!

Raleigh Durham Start Up Week Kicks off!

Raleigh Durham Start Up Week kicked off this week in downtine Durham, and I was able to attend the sessions on AI and also the Funding forecast. For me, the takeaways were that the Venture Funding Situation will continue to be very tight with IPOS down, and of course, everyone waiting for interest rates to come down. This does not mean that deals will not happen, but it does mean that it may be until March 2025, until investment levels come back to pre Covid times, and of course, turbulent elections do not help! I will be attending the Tweener Fund event this evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park!

Community Fire Academy

Thanks to all of the residents who participated in the Community Fire Academy last Saturday. I was honored to kick this off with Mayor Cawley, Mayor Pro Tem Garimella and Council Member Liz Johnson. Residents learned about how the Fire Department works during the day with our Fire Department! This program is a testament to the great Community work our Department does every day! Thanks to Chief Lozinsky and all of the leaders who made this happen!

Each year, the Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility (the source of water for Morrisville residents) temporarily suspends the use of ammonia in the water treatment process. This follows the state’s recommendation that all water systems that use chloramines (a compound of chlorine and ammonia) for disinfection temporarily switch to chlorine only. During this process, they also release water from fire hydrants to help ensure chlorine flows through the entire system. These short-term changes are an important part of maintaining our water system and help ensure our award-winning water remains safe.

If you use water for kidney dialysis, fish aquariums, and other chlorine sensitive uses, be aware that from Feb. 28, to several days after April 11, the water may contain chlorine or a mixture of both chlorine and ammonia. While the water may have a more distinct chlorine odor during this time, it remains safe to drink. Have a question? Visit carync.gov/waterchange or call 311 for more information.

Durham Mayor Delivers First State of Durham Address

Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams outlined his vision for investing back in Durham at his inaugural State of the City address Tuesday at the Carolina Theater.

Williams’ speech emphasized the importance of education in Durham, drawing from his previous experience as an educator.

As part of his push to support youth “from cradle to career,” he announced the launch of the Mentoring Alliance Partnership with the Youth Office and Youth Mentoring Collaborative. This partnership aims to offer educational opportunities for students to start on their career paths.

“Our youth are imperative to the sustained growth and success of the city, and we must provide them with the tools to be successful,” Williams said.

Williams said some of his most fulfilling moments as an educator were providing support for young Black boys, many of whom he “lost to the school-to-prison pipeline.”

To continue this work in Durham, he announced the creation of the Task Force on Black Men, which will support Black community members through recommendations to businesses, higher education institutions and the government.

Williams touched on the rapid growth of the Triangle, with a focus on housing. He emphasized “affordable living” over “affordable housing,” as part of his push to reinvest in Durham.

For Williams, “housing should be a human right” and should be provided for those who are disabled and unhoused.

He also acknowledged the history and culture of Durham neighborhoods and focused on protecting minorities in the face of development, adding that Durham has a “community full of promise and possibility.”

Williams described Durham as a “midsize major-status city” that is still largely locally owned, and spoke about how the city can fund itself through tourism and its workforce. He stated that the Durham tourism industry brought in over $1 billion in 2022 and that tourism “puts money back in people’s hands.”

Williams stated that the success of Durham lies in partnerships with the corporate community, schools and other cities in the region, believing that they can “build a perfect relationship” with all of these communities.

He identified Duke University as a significant contributor to the Durham economy, as an institution that employs over 40,000 people and creates an economic impact of over $1 billion.

He mentioned that the Durham City Council approved $31 million to fund sidewalks and street repairs in response to community complaints. He also addressed the success of Durham’s public transit and a recent federal grant that Durham was awarded worth more than 10 million dollars for transit and the Village Transit Center improvement, and that Durham will continue to have fare-free transit.

Williams brought City Manager Wanda Page to the stage to acknowledge her hard work in bringing Durham to the forefront of many achievements across the country, including being rated the 17th best place to live in America, 14th best-run city in America and the best-run city in North Carolina.

Williams also recognized school board members, first responders and other officials in the audience who contributed to Durham’s success. He later referenced a resident survey, which found that Durhamites wanted more police protection to increase safety in the community.

He presented Senator Mike Woodard with a coin for his service to the city.

“With open ears, open minds and an open heart, the problems faced by our community are solvable and the opportunities are endless,” Williams said. “Look in the mirror, see what I see, believe what I believe and say what I say Durham is dope.” Read More at https://www.dukechronicle.com/article/2024/04/

VP Harris to visit announces $20 billion in Climate Funding! Opens up Field Offices.

Vice President Kamala Harris came to Charlotte on Thursday to announce selections for $20 billion in awards that will fund tens of thousands of climate and clean energy projects across the country.

The money will go toward projects across America, especially in communities historically left behind and overburdened by pollution, the White House said.

Harris was joined by EPA Administrator Michael Regan, NC Gov. Roy Cooper, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and U.S. Rep. Alma Adams.

The investment will support a wide range of climate and clean energy projects, including distributed clean power generation and storage, net-zero retrofits of homes and small businesses, and zero-emission transportation.

Selected applicants have committed to reducing or avoiding up to 40 million metric tons of carbon pollution annually over the next seven years, and plan to mobilize almost $7 of private capital for every $1 of federal funds—approximately $150 billion total.

More Details on the Funding can be found here at https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/04/04/biden-harris-administration-announces-historic-20-billion-in-a.

WAKE COUNTY SCHOOLS WANT TO INCREASE TEACHER PAY/MAY ASK FOR MORE FUNDING FROM COMMISSIONERS

Wake school employees should get bigger raises next year than currently scheduled, school board members said Tuesday.

The school board on Tuesday discussed for the first time Superintendent Robert Taylor’s proposed budget for next year, which calls for a $58.3 million increase in county funding but not higher employee pay. That makes his proposal different from the past two budgets.

School board members largely say they want to raise employee pay beyond what the General Assembly approved for next year. Taylor’s budget includes only funding for raises for locally funded employees to match what state-funded employees will earn next year. However, the board has been trying to stick to a five-year plan to raise employee pay gradually.

Board members said they were worried about staffing shortages affecting the quality of education for students. The school system has been short hundreds of teachers, instruction assistants and bus drivers at points during the past few school years.

The board also held a public hearing on the budget Tuesday night. A handful of people spoke on the budget, with most asking for more employee pay. Another suggested more funding for school safety and another suggested some administrative employees make too much money.

Most of Taylor’s proposed budget increase would maintain existing services, rather than create new ones. That’s because of the impending loss of millions of federal dollars, rising property costs, a new elementary school and the required local salary increases.

Gaskin steps down as Secretary of Veteran Affairs, Grier Martin is tapped for job.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s second-term Cabinet secretary for military and veterans affairs is retiring, and a former state legislator who has been working at the Pentagon is taking his place.

Cooper's office announced on Thursday that Walter Gaskin, a retired three-star Marine Corps general who became secretary in 2021, is retiring from state government.

Succeeding him effective Monday will by Grier Martin, who is currently the assistant secretary of defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. Martin, a former soldier, served two stints in the state House as a Wake County Democrat going back to 2005 before resigning in 2022 to work in Washington.

The governor added that he is confident Martin "will continue our efforts to make North Carolina the most military and veteran friendly state in the nation.”

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs manages state veterans’ nursing homes and cemeteries, and it promotes activities to support military installations in North Carolina and the quality of life for current and retired service members.

Rep. John Hardister steps down!

N.C. Rep. Jon Hardister (R-Guilford) will be stepping down from his seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

On Thursday, Hardister, the state house deputy majority whip, announced his decision, which he says is “to rededicate my time to family and working in the private sector. I am passionate about public service, but it is now time to shift my focus to private sector work and spending time with family.”

Hardister was first elected in 2012 and has served in the state house for six terms.

In March, Hardister lost his race for the GOP nomination for North Carolina commissioner of labor to Luke Farley. Hardister claimed 28.05% of the vote to Farley’s 36.94%.

LATEST NATIONAL AND GLOBAL UPDATES

1. Turkey announced restrictions on exports to Israel of 54 military-related products. Over the weekend thousands of Turks protested against their country’s continuation of trade with the Jewish state, which had opposed proposed Turkish aid drops in the Gaza Strip. The leaders of Egypt, France and Jordan warned that a planned Israeli invasion of the city of Rafah in the south of the strip would have “dangerous consequences”. Earlier, Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, said that a date had been set for the offensive.

2. America, Australia and Britain said they may work with Japan on developing advanced technology, including artificial intelligence and hypersonic missiles, as part of the AUKUS security agreement. Japan is unlikely to formally join the alliance, which was set up in 2021. President Joe Biden is expected to discuss security with Kishida Fumio, Japan’s prime minister, at the White House on Wednesday

3. Yoon Suk-yeol, South Korea’s president, said his country would invest 9.4trn won ($6.94 bn) in artificial intelligence by 2027. He wants to maintain South Korea’s lead in advanced semiconductor chips. Countries all over the world, including America, China and Japan, are spending lavishly to revive manufacturing. “Current competition in semiconductors is an industrial war,” said Mr Yoon.

4. Last month was the hottest March on record, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, an EU agency. It was the tenth time in a row that monthly temperatures broke records. Global temperatures were also at a record-high last year. Greenhouse-gas emissions caused by humans are responsible for most of the increase. El Niño, a weather cycle, is driving temperatures up further.

5. Six European countries, including Britain and Germany, signed an agreement to protect underwater infrastructure in the North Sea. The deal will allow them to share information about potential attacks. In recent years Western officials have grown increasingly concerned about the vulnerability of undersea cables, which are estimated to carry 95% of the world’s international digital data. Russian attacks are a particular worry.

6. Spain is to scrap “golden visas” for those who buy property in the country. Under the current scheme, non-EU citizens can live

and work in Spain if they invest €500,000 ($543,000) in real estate there. Last year Portugal and Ireland also ended similar schemes, which are particularly popular with wealthy Chinese who want to emigrate. They are sometimes blamed for exacerbating housing shortages.

7. Millions of people in North America viewed the total solar eclipse that began sweeping the continent at 11:07 PDT. The phenomenon happens around every 18 months, but rarely in such populated areas. From one coast to the other, Mexicans, Americans and Canadians gathered to watch the eerie spectacle. Besides being beautiful, total eclipses are useful to science.

8. Joe Biden said Binyamin Netanyahu’s approach to Gaza was a “mistake”—his strongest rebuke yet of Israel’s prime minister—during a television interview. He also urged Israel to pursue a ceasefire and called an Israeli drone attack that killed aid workers in Gaza last week “outrageous”. Mr Biden previously maintained that it was Hamas’s responsibility to agree to a truce.
