A Message
from MAYOR MARGOT GARANT

As we head towards a robust summer season, things in the Village are certainly upbeat and looking good! The Ginny Marie is back in the water at Harborfront Park! If you haven't had the opportunity, please sign up for sunset sail and get out on this magnificent schooner and enjoy the cool harbor breeze while reaching out to touch a golden sunset!

Rowing classes for adults and teenagers take place at Village Center and on the harbor. Our seniors are enjoying meeting each other and experiencing more new programs at Village Center.

For our children, summer camp is around the corner- where our kids learn the lifetime recreational sports of tennis, golf, swimming, and they may even find a pickleball racquet in hand this year!

Paving projects have been completed, and sidewalk repair is now underway. Buildings are going up, and new residents are moving in and buying at prices higher than ever!

Our 4th of July traditions will include fireworks at East Beach on the 3rd and the Fire Department parade on the 4th morning at 10:00 am.

We live in a beautiful, year-round community. I do hope, during these warm weather months, you enjoy all our beaches, beautiful walkways, pocket parks, and events on the horizon. Don't take these days for granted - embrace each one as if there is no tomorrow and be THANKFUL for your community, your beautiful home, and each other. Be kind - and enjoy the fruits of summer just unfolding.

PJV TREASURER AND VILLAGE CLERK RE-ELECTED TO LIVCTA BOARD
Continuing their professional development to benefit our residents.
Congratulations to PJV Treasurer Denise Mordente and Village Clerk Barbara Sakovich for their re-election to the Long Island Village Clerks and Treasurers Association. Being part of this organization creates collaboration and access to other Village government officials on Long Island, which benefits PJV staff and residents. LIVCTA encourages and stimulates cooperation among members for their mutual benefit and welfare; provides a medium for exchanging ideas and experiences; and enhances their professional service to the elected officials and the communities they serve. Every LIVCTA meeting has guest speakers. For example, the Office of the State Comptroller comes down from Albany and teaches about new laws and regulations. Our village residents benefit from Ms. Sakovich and Ms. Mordente's additional training and networking opportunities that keep them up-to-date on laws & regulations, help them provide more efficient services, and keep them on top of trends that are happening on Long Island.
This is Village Clerk Barbara Sakovich's 2nd term as Suffolk director – 2021 and 2022. Treasurer Denise Mordente was the Suffolk Director from 2008 to 2021 and treasurer from 2021 to current.

And while we are chatting about Denise, she also recently received a commendation for 25 years of service from the New York Conference of Mayors.

We appreciate these two dynamic women for their drive and passion for their profession!
4th OF JULY FIREWORKS AND FIRE DEPT. PARADE
Bringing our community and families together, it's what we do!
Port Jefferson takes its 4th of July celebration seriously! It's one of the highlights of the year. These events take planning and coordination, and they're one of those things that make our Village so special. We highly recommend heading out to East or West Beach on Sunday, July 3rd, at dusk for the firework festivities. If you are new to the area, this is a must-experience celebration. To everyone else, we'll see you at the beach!

Then, join us on Main street Monday, July 4th at 10:00 am for the PJFD Parade. Fire trucks, classic cars, civic groups, floats, and bands from all across Long Island are lining up for a spectacular parade down Main Street.

The 4th of July is an exciting time for the whole family! We have lots of activities planned for you and your family to enjoy.
from Deputy Mayor Kathianne Snaden
Summer is right around the corner, and so is our "busy season"! It is shaping up to be filled with many fun and family-friendly events.
Port Paws Dog Festival on July 23rd and 24th will be featuring the fun and exciting Dock Dogs event. Come see dogs fly! Bring the family, and enjoy the jumping dogs, vendors, and more!

One week later, bring a lawn chair, grab a takeout meal and make your way to the waterfront to watch some talented musicians at our Port Palooza Music
Festival. There are sure to be some great tunes and talent!

While we are inviting many to the Village for these events, our Parks Department has been busy preparing and beautifying our surroundings. As plantings begin to bloom, they fill both uptown and downtown with a seasonal ambiance that I hope you all enjoy or, as they say, "take some time to stop and smell the roses." Stay tuned for more pocket parks to be included in this initiative!

SIDEWALK REPAIRS
Giving our curbs appeal.
Get ready to see the improvements along your favorite sidewalks. These infrastructure projects help improve the quality of life for everyone by enhancing pedestrian safety, beautifying our streets, and making them a more enjoyable place to walk and play.

As always, we are taking advantage of grant funds to subsidize the project. American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant funds will partially fund this needed initiative.

This year, we will be paving sidewalks in the following areas:
  • Spring Street
  • Maple place and Tuthill
  • Beach Street
  • North side of Thompson Street
  • East Broadway at Fifth Season
  • East Broadway in front of founders Park
  • Main Street at Infant Jesus
  • Main Street - Jones to Tuthill
  • In the Riviera community - Sawtooth Cove
  • Main Street - Upper Port
We hope you enjoy the new look and feel of our improved walkways.
PROACTIVELY KEEPING OUR NEIGHBORHOODS SAFE
PJ Code officer is tasked with citing building code and property violations.
Code Officer Murdocco is now working with the Building and Planning Departments on building code violations. He was required to pass additional testing showing his substantial knowledge base. The addition of officer Murdocco will help prevent and rectify the zombie houses in our neighborhoods, identify safety issues at an early stage, and provide additional enforcement tools that will help make all of our neighborhoods safer.

Deputy Mayor Snaden has had great success with her Zombie Home Task Force in bringing the number of zombie homes in the village down drastically. Please contact her at Trustee-Snaden@Portjeff.com should you have any questions or concerns regarding this topic.

Tackling the zombie house dilemma is a community effort so if you see something, say something. Contact the Code Department at (631) 744-0066 or report the incident on the Residents Portal https://portjeff.com/portal/

PORT PAWS DOG FESTIVAL - COME SEE DOGS FLY!
A day of laughter, amazement, and maybe even finding your new best friend!
Dogs, dogs, and more dogs! We all love our furry friends, and July 23rd and 24th are going to the dogs in Port Jefferson. Bring your favorite canine(s) and enjoy the pure joy of our Port Paws Dog Festival!

Come see Dogs Fly! Literally! The Dock Dog events include - The Big Air® competition that features dogs running down a 40' dock and diving into a pool of water after an object. They are electronically judged for the length of their jump. - The Extreme Vertical® competition is a "High Jump" for the dogs as they lunge to snag a "bumper" suspended in the air. With each grab, the height increases in 2-inch increments until only one dog is crowned king. - Rounding out the action is the newest form of competition known as Speed Retrieve® – where the dogs are put on the clock to see how fast they can run down the dock, jump into the water, swim to the end of the pool, and retrieve an object which is held by a modified extender arm.

Be prepared to be amazed at the agility and sheer strength of our four-legged athletes! Join us at the Joe Erland Ball Field on Caroline Ave, where there will be food trucks and demonstrations on both days.

The Dock Dogs competitions are open to everyone. Teams are made up of one dog and one handler. Your canine must be six months or older to be eligible. Canines of any breed, size, or shape are welcomed. Not only is the competition open to all types of canines, but also handlers above the age of 7 are welcome. We even have a Youth Handler class for those between the ages of 7-14. Pre-registration will be available until one week prior to the event by logging onto www.dockdogs.com. A try-it for dogs that are not competitors is on Friday, July 22nd, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

Whether you want to sit back and enjoy the events and the dogs or be a part of the action, this is where you need to be! Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy all of the festivities.

If you want to add a furry friend to your family, check-in at this event. Local rescues will be there to show off their amazing pups that could be your soulmate! Don't miss the chance to change your life for the better with one (or two) of the beautiful souls you will meet!

Volunteers needed. What could be more fun than spending the day volunteering in a park full of canines?!?! Email - LIDogFestival@ gmail.com to sign up.

This spring has been busy, exciting, interesting, and rewarding in many ways. The Country Club's golf membership is near capacity. We see many new faces enjoying the course and the many programs offered by our professional staff. Jake Anderson (our head Pro) and Brendon Cain (our assistant Pro) have put together programs for children and adults at all ability levels. I love watching "Jake" march out to the driving range or putting green with his little army following along behind. These youngsters are the future of our club.

I am excited to announce that Pat Sullivan has been appointed our Golf Course Superintendent. Pat has been working behind the scenes for 17 years. You will see Pat riding the mowers, repairing our irrigation system, raking the bunkers, maintaining the tennis courts, and a lot more. If you see Pat (and you will if you play golf), say "Hi "and welcome him to his new position.
On a sad note... We do not have a tennis membership this year because of the serious bluff situation. However, we have opened tennis courts 7 & 8 for last year's tennis members. We activated the reservation system that was used last year. Although it's only 2 courts, we hope you take advantage and get in some tennis at the club.

I want to encourage everyone to visit the recreation website to see the many programs we offer. We have tennis, basketball, golf, swimming, yoga, dance, music, rowing, horseback riding, pickle ball, and many more. I know there is something of interest to everyone.

To the golfers, the kayakers, the tennis players, the rowers, the swimmers, and all other participants... HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE SUMMER!

Stan Loucks
Trustee, Port Jefferson

PS: The fireworks will be on Sunday, July 3rd. The best viewing is at East Beach, West Beach, and the Country Club.
Village Board of Trustees Meetings:
All Village Board Meetings are open to the public. On the first business Monday of every month at 5:00 pm, the BoTs meet in the conference room of Village Hall to conduct the business portion of the meeting. The public is welcome to sit in and listen only during this portion. The board then moves upstairs to the courtroom to conduct the public portion of the meeting and is open for the public to speak.

The Second Board of Trustees Meeting, which is usually held on the third Business Monday of the month, is also open to the public, but it is a business meeting only, starting at 3:30 pm, downstairs in the conference room. The public is welcome to attend, but there is no public input.

Planning Board:
The Planning Board is charged with specific duties and responsibilities, including long-range planning, reviewing subdivision plans, holding public hearings and forwarding recommendations on proposed zoning changes, and reviewing major developments. Decisions made by the Planning Board are binding.

Zoning Board of Appeals:
The Board members review all applications based on the Village Zoning Ordinances. All zoning designations are represented on a zoning map located at the Village Building & Planning Department, along with a detailed explanation of each designation within the Village Code.
SCPD 6th PRECINCT COMMUNITY MEETINGS
The Suffolk County Police Department holds community meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, alternating the meeting time to ensure maximum accessibility for all residents. Residents are encouraged to speak with officers about any crimes or quality of life issues they may be experiencing in their neighborhoods.

The next events with the 6th Precinct are:

Things are happening fast with the LIRR, the Port Times Record reported about a press conference held at Stony Brook station last Tuesday. Legislative leaders, Steve Englebright, Ed Romaine, and Jonathan Kornreich came together for this media release.

Quoting from the Record, Supervisor Romaine stated Diesel is “Some of the most polluting fuel that we have.” Mr. Romaine also stated that we deserve at least 20th-century technology.

I have pointed out for several years that North Shore residents “commuting to their commute” on the Ronkonkoma line is a brown, daily exercise for many. State Sen. Mattera made this point, also saying that all North Shore residents need to be able to “drive to a nearby station without changing trains to New York City.”

$4 million was allocated to study electrification of the Port Jefferson Branch – we need the MTA to complete the study in time for execution in the pending MTA 5-Year Plan. “Things are happening fast…”, though not necessarily on the rails. I hope we can catch this
train. The MTA will receive $10 billion from the Fed. It is time some of this money gets spent on the Port Jefferson line.

Trustee Snaden and I met with LIRR planning and technical executives on what I call “A Better Ride” on the LIRR brief last week. I then called Assemblyman Englebright by phone on Monday, and we discussed the not-to-certain nature of the executive’s responses. I related the content of the discussions and followed up with one of my position papers on this topic.

In a related story, Samuel (Sammy) Chu has been appointed to the MTA Board. Battery Electric for the Port Jefferson line is high on his priority list. This is ABSOLUTELY possible. Ever seen movies of the early 20th century? Every locomotive had a fuel car – a coal car. Small battery cars can be added if all other design options fail.
In another development, Mayor Garant and I will meet soon to discuss Community Choice Aggregation and green electrical energy for Port Jefferson residents at a reduced cost. I want Port Jefferson to lead Long Island on green infrastructure and development!

Best,
Bruce Miller

As the summer approaches, it's a delight to see our Village bustling with celebrations and smiling faces. My congratulations to all of the 2022 graduates!

Gardeners and community volunteers gathered at the Beach Street Community Garden last Saturday morning to continue building upon the garden's success and beauty as its second year blossoms. A dozen community members ages 8 through 80 worked together to: install a series of mailboxes- generously donated by Alex and Jeff C.- to be used as tool storage, a shared seed library, and more; construct two new gates for more convenient garden entry; mount a decorative garden mural created and donated by Stony Brook University student Erica L.; attach cross-braces to stabilize garden fence posts; and generally tidy the parkland. Be sure to drive by and check it out! We look forward to announcing summer garden events and programming shortly.

If you have an extra hour or two in the coming week, the Port Jefferson Prom Committee would appreciate your donation of time towards the last phases of painting preparations- no experience needed! I'll be heading back to the High School to help wrap up the painting and to share in the magic of this awesome tradition. Email pjhsprom@gmail.com to let them know when you can be there: this truly is a 'many hands make light work' effort.
I hope to see many of you at the Long Island Maker Faire hosted by the Long Island Explorium on Saturday, June 11th.
I am in awe of the lineup of talented makers for this interactive family-friendly event, and I hope that our residents will make the most of this festival held at our own Harborfront Park. I'll be volunteering to facilitate the event in the afternoon- be sure to say hello!

There will be a Learn-and-Lend-a-Hand program at the High St + Spring St pollinator garden on Sunday, 6/12, 11am-1pm. If you're curious about the buzz around this type of garden, you're welcome to come down to check it out and ask questions. Knowledge is power!

I continue to explore flood mitigation and other grant opportunities with Elizabeth Hornstein, Long Island Sound Study's Sustainable & Resilient Communities Extension Professional. Ms. Hornstein's role at LISS is to connect municipalities like PJV to local and national funding opportunities; this will reduce the taxpayer burden of expensive, necessary infrastructural improvements to combat the effects of climate change.

Last but not least, don't forget to mark your calendars for the upcoming Village election for two trustee positions: June 21st from 6am-9pm at Village Center. Wednesday's Meet the Candidates night, hosted by the Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, is on Port Jefferson Village's YouTube channel for viewing at your convenience. CLICK HERE

NEW EQUIPMENT FOR MORE EFFICIENCIES
Bringing more productivity to clean-ups and more.
After the next major storm, keep a lookout for our upgraded payloader. This labor-saving piece of equipment can increase output, creating faster clean-up times and more efficient operations with its increased power and torque all while using less fuel. It'll help us create safer streets through better maintenance of our public areas.

It is not just for storm clean-ups. The new payloader is a versatile piece of equipment that will be used for various projects - like the leaf and branch pickups, winter salt & sand loading, and snow removal, keeping our streets clear of impediments. It is a valuable general use machine that will improve service for our community.
Meet our team. Their stories are inspiring, and they provide excellent service to all who live here and visit. We will highlight a new professional every month and introduce you to the most amazing and talented individuals that make Port Jefferson Village so special. These are people who bring their experience and dedication every single day.  When they say it takes a Village, they’re talking about the people of Port Jefferson Village!
We all know how hard it is to find the right person for the job. Well, I have some excellent news. We are proud to introduce you to the ultimate professional that is the right person for her job...
Meet Michelle Ferrante, our Deputy Treasurer.
She is acutely detail-oriented, she does not stop until her duties have been brought to fruition, and for 13 years, she's brilliantly navigated the intricacies of watching over the financial activities of our Village.

Michelle's work is very regulated. Proper procedures must be followed every day for every transaction. She is the protector that we are grateful for. Her duties include handling all of the accounts payable for the Village and the country club; all of the accounts receivable for the Village Center, and other various payments that the Village receives; she also reviews and approves journal entries and bank reconciliations processed by the treasurer and accountant. Denise Mordente, our Village Treasurer, relies on Michelle's skills to ensure the office works effectively. " She is the best deputy I have worked with in my 27 years! She will do anything that needs to be done without a complaint. Michelle is extremely dedicated, caring, and strong." she continues, "She looks out for the taxpayer's money. She makes sure all department heads are in compliance with our purchasing policy, which means she makes sure there are proper quotes and the bidding process is followed. I wouldn't want anyone else on my team!" Michelle and Denise are our treasury department dynamic duo, like Batman and Robin, Han Solo and Chewbacca, Anna and Elsa, Homes and Watson, Tina Fey and Amy Pohler... We could go on!

"I always make sure that the resident's money is not being spent frivolously. I drive my coworkers crazy, questioning everything. I am always known as the NO girl, LOL," Michelle explains. It isn't easy to be the "no girl," but we are incredibly grateful that we have Michelle to deliver those "no's" in her professional manner.

"I have wonderful coworkers, especially my mentor, the Treasurer Denise Mordente, who along with The Mayor and Trustees believed in me and gave me this amazing opportunity," Michelle reveals. " I am the mother of a beautiful daughter, Giavanna, who will be graduating this June and starting the next chapter of her life by attending Florida Atlantic University, majoring in English, and being a part of their Cheerleading team. I have the greatest parents who support me through everything. Without them, I would not be the person I am today!" Michelle's humility and appreciation for the people in her life are just some more of the reasons that make her the right person for her job!

The beaches, the gorgeous sunsets, and the sense of community are some of Michelle's favorite things about Port Jefferson. We have just given you a very long list of our favorite things about Michelle. So I guess you can say there is a lot of mutual admiration!

Thank you, Michelle! We appreciate your guardianship, attention to detail, and the kind and compassionate way you carry yourself in this world!
We are proud to spotlight Ex-Fire Chief Todd Stumpf for his extraordinary volunteerism. He has been a volunteer firefighter since 1988. Let us repeat that… He has been saving lives and property for over 34 years! He began volunteering right out of high school in Farmingville, where he lived. Then 14 years ago, he moved his family to Port Jeff and immediately joined the fire department.

Volunteering is a way of life for the Stumpf family. "I have always volunteered. My father was a volunteer. My wife is a volunteer. My son is a volunteer. Our family is active at the firehouse together. It is a social activity, but it is also very serious because it can be so dangerous. We do enjoy the social aspect of the firehouse. We have made many lifelong friends at the Port Jefferson Fire Department." Todd explains, "I have been a member of the department for 14 years, but for the last 8, I have been Chief. In the fire department, I not only fight fires but also train other fire department members to fight fires safely." Todd continues.
Being a volunteer firefighter requires sacrifices. "There is a running joke in our house that I am home for 8 minutes a day. Where that is an exaggeration, the fire department, especially while I was chief, was very time-consuming. I would say as Chief, I spent at least 40 hours a week at the firehouse. Now that I am no longer chief, I would guess I was down to about 20 hours." We are grateful for the knowledge and dedication ex-chief Stumpf has given to our community.

For Chief, it is very rewarding when he can interact with the community, and they show their appreciation for his efforts. But his daughter would say that my most rewarding experience was when he rescued a kitten from a car motor and was able to bring him home for her. "The fire department is part of me. I have been involved for so long and spent so many hours I would not know what to do without it. I do love my time there. The friendships and camaraderie I have there are very important to me." Todd shares. He also loves to spend time with his wife and four children, ride his motorcycle, and watch the Yankees and the Rangers play.

Ex-chief Stumpf recommends donating your time to an organization like the fire department. "It is a very fulfilling and rewarding experience. Not only are you contributing to the community in which you live, but you're learning different aspects of service. You are also making lifelong friendships and working in a team environment." These are all life lessons that Todd exemplifies!

We can't begin to thank Todd and the Stumpf family for their courage, knowledge, and sacrifices. You all are a true asset to our community.
SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING
Protecting our streets and parks is a top priority. Our 'See Something - Say Something' campaign is designed to make you a part of the solution. Signs are being posted throughout Main Street, in both uptown and downtown areas. The phone number of the supervising Code Officer is prominently displayed on each sign. We encourage residents to report any suspicious activity or other hazards. If you see something unusual or witness any concerning behavior, call (631) 774-0066. The Code Enforcement Bureau will secure the scene immediately, investigate the situation and work with SCPD. Our Code officers have a well-established relationship with SCPD. Many of them are retired, active or auxiliary officers. We also have security cameras on our streets. SCPD’s real-time crime center is tied into our camera system and can monitor them when necessary. All crimes are reported to Suffolk County Police. It will take all of us to be proactive and diligent to continue with the good work that has already been established.
