COMMUNITY CALENDAR

Sunapee Happenings

Oh, what a week it was! There were spy (?) Balloons overhead… and a couple of "UFO Objects" shot down. A super Super Bowl #57! Yesterday there was love in the air as we celebrated St. Valentines Day.  Then, oddly, tho calendar say’s February (aka: Winter) we've been gifted with a couple of days that feel downright Spring-like with temperatures in the 40’s and glorious sunshine!

As icicles dripped from the eaves, gardeners were dreaming of planting seeds early.  Students were wishing for a ’snowy / no school day’.  While some of us were simply nostalgic for the Winter Wonderland in our memories.  Remember just two short weeks ago?

"Jennie Powers, the Woman who Dares"

at The New London Inn

Space is limited

Jennie Powers took a stand against social vices in New Hampshire and Vermont in the early twentieth century. She was a humane society agent in Keene from 1903-1936 and one of the first humane society agents to become a deputy sheriff in New Hampshire. Jennie was known across the country as "The Woman Who Dares" cited by the Boston Post newspaper in 1906 as having arrested more men than any other woman in America. As a photographic activist, she used her camera to document animal cruelty, family violence, and wide-spread poverty in New Hampshire's Monadnock region and beyond.

"... And I told him, no I don’t play any sports. I do theater, I’m in choir, I play the violin and piano, I used to take art classes.

And he went wow. That’s amazing! And I said, “Oh no, but I’m not any good at any of them.”

And he said something then that I will never forget and which absolutely blew my mind because no one had ever said anything like it to me before: 'I don’t think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think you’ve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.'”

OUT & ABOUT IN NATURE

Winter Birds and The Great Backyard Bird Count!

Connect to birds, to nature and with each other!

Be part of a global event!

Join the annual bird count on February 17-20, 2023.

The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a free, fun, and easy event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of bird populations. Participants are asked to count birds for as little as 15 minutes (or as long as they wish) on one or more days of the four-day event and report their sightings online at birdcount.org. Anyone can take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count, from beginning bird watchers to experts, and you can participate from your backyard, or anywhere in the world.

"We all need an incentive to get outside mid-winter and look for birds beyond what we can see from our windows. It’s fun to see the little flashes of light on the map when we submit our counts, among the thousands around the world, and we know our data matter." Barb Gorges, Wyoming, United States

CAUTION: With the uncertainty of this Winter’s weather, NH Fish & Game and local Safety Service officials urge CAUTION! if you are considering skating or ice fishing. Ice has been 'In & Out' again on Lake Sunapee.

SUNAPEE TRIVIA

Seventy-six percent of readers selected 'There was no snow' as the reason that the Mt. Sunapee Ski Area did not open on opening day. Mt. Sunapee did not open for it's first day of skiing until Jan 25, 1949 after an 8" snowfall allowed skiing on the open slope. (Sunapee Historical Society)

What were the names of the first 3 ski trails?
Flying Goose, Eggbeater, Chipmunk
Chipmunk, Eggbeater, Hansen-Chase
Flying Goose, Chipmunk, Hansen-Chase

THANK YOU

"Thanks" to Brant Fagan, owner, editor, publisher of “SooNipi” for recognizing Sunapee’s historic landmark Livery in Sunapee Harbor with a feature article in the Autumn edition and now a photo on the cover of the Winter SooNipi.

Stay safe, winter well and enjoy the season...

whatever the weather may be.
