Welcome Autumn!

Greetings Friends!

Summer seems to have gone by very quickly, do you agree? We hope you were able to participate in the activities that bring you joy during the the warm summer days and evenings like campfires, toasted marshmallows, swimming, kayaking, blueberry picking, and as we wind down, our local county fairs and more.

September is Ovarian and Cervical Cancer Awareness and Prevention month. We have joined forces with Stanley Subaru to bring awareness to symptoms and through infographics, our Teal Tuesday posts and a special Open-House featuring cancer survivor-thriver Donna Wiegle on September 29 at 4:00. Donna will talk about her amazing experiences, illustrated in her book, “FINDING COURAGE: Navigating Cancer on my Harley.” She will offer a book signing. Refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!

We want to say a huge thank you to Ellsworth Shaws for their donation to the Center through their 'GIVE BACK WHERE IT COUNTS Bag Program' that was collected through the month of August.

We are in the final month of the 2022 Beth C. Wright Summer Appeal. If you haven't donated and would like to, please see the details below.

Please take a look at our featured events below coming up in September and visit our website for our recurring ones and ongoing news pop-ups featured on the bottom of our home page.

We want to inform everyone that we are following current Maine CDC masking guidelines which say, if you are in a larger group of people please, "Mask if you're asked."

If you have any questions, need assistance or just want to say hi, please feel free to stop by or call us at the Center 207-664-0339 or email us at info@bethwrightcancercenter.org

All the Best,

Angela Fochesato, Executive Director

Final Month of the

2022 Beth C. Wright Summer Appeal

The Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center launched our Summer Appeal in June and it will be wrapping up on October 15.

The goal for the summer long campaign has been to raise funds that allow us to continue to provide support to those who are affected by cancer, their caregivers and their loved ones living in Washington and Hancock Counties. Your gift would make life just a little easier for patients of the Center who need the services that we offer.

Proceeds from the 2022 Summer Appeal offers patient-centered cancer care, resource navigation, cancer prevention education, early detection services, cancer/caregiver support groups, healthy-living programs, free complementary modalities services and one-on-one support. Patient navigation services are confidential, respectful, compassionate, mindful of patient safety, and offered at no cost to patients. Cancer Buddy Program planning is in the works in the coming months to enhance our client experience.

Your continued support goes a long way to helping the Beth Wright Center give those who are in need benefit to help them navigate the stresses of their illness.

We appreciate your gracious donation and hope it gives you a sense of fulfillment knowing that you are helping your neighbors battle the challenges of this terrible disease.

Because of kind donors like you, we can ensure cancer patients and their families have access to free support, advice, resources, services, and information.

Thanks to your support and the support of all our amazing donors, huge progress is being made in the fight against cancer.

Today, 6 out of 10 people survive a cancer diagnosis, compared to just 4 out of 10 only twenty years ago. We won't stop until 10 out of 10 people are surviving their cancer diagnosis.

If you haven't had the opportunity to donate you can DONATE here today.

Thank you,

Angela Fochesato, Executive Director

September is Ovarian and Cervical

Cancer Awareness Month

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. We are reminded that many women are diagnosed without knowing the symptoms.

The Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center is excited to be collaborating with Stanley Subaru to bring an Ovarian Cancer Awareness Campaign to Washington and Hancock Counties. The campaign is aimed to spread awareness and educate all about the symptoms and to raise funds to help support women in our communities.

For the month of September, check in every Tuesday for “Teal Tuesday” for Ovarian Cancer Awareness social media campaign. Like/Follow us so you can learn the symptoms. Tag friends so they can learn, too.

Did You Know! The first symptom that few of us think to mention to a doctor is feeling full quickly, also known as early satiety. Any appetite change that lasts more than two weeks is cause for concern, but sometimes it’s hard to keep track.

An Ovarian Cancer Survivor shared: When I wasn’t hungry at mealtimes, I thought I probably snacked too much before dinner. Sometimes I had a sick feeling after eating, but I attributed it to indigestion or reflux. (Another symptom: Indigestion). This feeling progressed and I just generally felt yucky. When an upper GI showed that I had no signs of reflux, I never mentioned it again. I figured I needed to watch my snacking or cut back on portion sizes. Feeling full quickly is another example of a symptom that I never dreamed was caused by ovarian cancer.

Learn more about the other surprising symptoms on Teal Tuesday and please share with a friend.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Home Cooks and Drivers are needed to provide meal service

to cancer patients & their families

Ellsworth The Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center is currently looking for new volunteer cooks to help carry out their Home Cooked Healing program mission. For several years, home cooks have generously given their time and talents to prepare healthy meals for cancer patients and their families in Hancock County. Recipients receive meals at no charge for an eight-week period while the patient is undergoing treatment or recovering. Home-cooked meals are prepared according to individual dietary needs and preferences of each patient. Meals are delivered directly to the client’s door or can be available for pick-up at the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center (BCWCRC.) Volunteers are needed to cook and/or deliver meals.

Volunteer cooks prepare meals in their own home kitchens. Because the program is serving those whose immune systems may be compromised by cancer treatments, food safety is a top priority. Volunteer cooks must be certified by Maine’s ServSafe program. The BCWCRC will arrange for ServSafe training and testing for committed volunteers, if necessary. Volunteers may be asked to prepare one or more meals per week of service. Frozen organic meats are provided by BCWCRC while cooks may request reimbursement for the purchase of other ingredients needed.

Volunteer drivers are also needed to deliver prepared meals once a week while maintaining complete confidentiality.

If you enjoy cooking or can deliver meals and would like to support people in our community with nutritious food while living with a cancer diagnosis, please contact the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center by September 26, 2022. To become a volunteer or for more information, please call the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center at 664-0339 to speak with Amy or email: akurman@bethwrightcancercenter.org
