Last month, on January 22, we remembered the 48th anniversary of the horrific, godless, murder-approving Supreme Court decision that gave women the “right” to abort their unborn babies. As God’s people, we corporately grieve the merciless deaths of so many defenseless human beings.
· We grieve the over 60 million babies whose lives have been snuffed out since 1973 before they even got out of the womb. This averages out to well over 1 million per year. 3,700 per day. 1 baby every 23 seconds.
· We lament the irrational thinking of certain fetal homicide laws in some states, where it is “murder to kill an embryo intentionally, except in cases of abortion.” In other words, it’s unlawful to kill the unborn child unless the mother wants to kill it. Or, it’s illegal to kill an unborn baby, unless it’s legal. How warped is that?
· We are saddened by the schizophrenic thinking whereby at the same hospital at the same time, an abortion can be going on in one operating room & intra-uterine surgery can be happening in another operating room. In other words, one group of medical personnel is ending a baby’s life intentionally & another group is intentionally trying to save a baby’s life – in the same hospital. What is wrong with this picture?
· We mourn the ungodly belief that viability outside the womb is a criterion for personhood. What about all the people on dialysis machines or respirators – are they no longer persons? What’s the difference in a placenta keeping you alive or a machine?
· We have great sorrow over the huge number of people who sanction what is the essence of totalitarian rule: the will of the strong determines the rights of the weak. In other words, big, powerful people determine whether or not small, defenseless people will live or die.
· We grieve a national justice system that makes it unlawful to crush the egg of a bald eagle or a sea turtle, but will not protect the fertilized egg of a human being.
· We weep over the wicked thinking that places the “right not to be pregnant” over the “right to live.” Doesn’t justice demand that we give preference to the greater right, the right that does the least harm, the right that does not intentionally kill a human being?
· We are sick and tired of the selective elevation of “choice.” It is hypocritical for lawmakers to claim that “choice” is the untouchable, sacred absolute in the case of the destiny of unborn human beings, but then pass legislation that will force people to do certain things. Where is sacred “choice” in that instance? It’s a sham argument. There are many cases in life where our choices are limited by the law.
· We are full of sorrow over the inconsistent thinking with regard to the term “vital signs” i.e., heartbeat and brain waves. When these cease for a period of time, a person may be legally declared dead. When the same signs are clearly present in a developing embryo, why are people reluctant to declare the little person alive?
We beg God to bring an end to this tragic national sin. Sadly, Isaiah 13:18 describes the hard hearts of those in power:
Their bows will slaughter the young men; they will have no mercy on the fruit of the womb;
their eyes will not pity children.
Lord, have mercy on our nation! Grant repentance, for our good and Your glory! Amen.
