Early voting for the runoff election begins this weekend between April 24 and 25 at the Coral Gables branch library located at 3443 Segovia Street. Residents can vote in-person or drop-off their mail-in ballots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday. Tuesday, April 27, is Election Day and voters can vote at their assigned precinct.
The seats up for election are as follows:
- Group 2 Commission candidates- Rhonda Anderson and Jose Valdes-Fauli.
- Group 3 Commission candidates- Javier Baños and Kirk Menendez.

Recently the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce removed an official time capsule from the former Police and Fire Headquarters which was buried on July 4, 1976 in honor of America’s Bicentennial. The time capsule carries messages of hope and greetings to Gables’ leaders, business owners, students and residents for its scheduled removal in 2076.
With the sale of the property, it needed to be relocated. The Chamber removed and examined the time capsule which is intact. The next step is to find a new home for the next 55 years and to polish the bronze plaque that will once again grace its cover.
“While we won’t be around to view the removal in 55-years, we are grateful for our former leaders such as Margaret St. Germain, the first woman Chair of the Board who presided over the burial in 1976 along with James Withers, Bicentennial Committee Chair and long-time Coral Gables resident, and former Chamber Communications Manager Connie Crowther for looking to bring the past to life,” said Mark Trowbridge, President and CEO of the Chamber. “It is great to do our part to preserve our history.”

Drive-thru Household Hazardous Waste Collection
In celebration of Earth Day, the City is holding its Household Hazardous Waste Collection this Saturday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the City Hall Parking Lot.
Stop by to recycle your old electronics and large cardboard boxes, dispose of household hazardous waste, and shred any sensitive documents safely and securely onsite. Any electronic item that has a plug or takes batteries is eligible to be recycled.
Residents can drop off their household hazardous waste (ex: paint cans, pool chemicals, compact fluorescent light bulbs, cleaners, oils, batteries, and household pesticides) from the convenience of their vehicle; no walk-ins accepted in order to abide by COVID-19 safety guidelines.
Please be prepared to show proof of Coral Gables residency.
As a result of the collection events over the last five years, the City has been able to divert 260,000 pounds of electronic and household hazardous waste and paper from entering the landfills

Birds, bats, bees, and butterflies, and other small insects and animals are responsible for sustaining our native ecosystems and natural resources by aiding plants to reproduce.
Pollinating animals and insects travel from plant to plant collecting and carrying pollen to the reproductive plant to create a variety of benefits including increasing fruit and vegetable production, preventing soil erosion, and increasing carbon sequestration.
Pollinators include bees and native butterflies. The City has implemented pollinator areas in a variety of sites.

Youth Camper Scholarship
The Coral Gables Community Foundation is accepting applications for the James Captain Memorial Scholarship.
This program provides summer camp tuition scholarships to children in need from the Coral Gables and Coconut Grove area and was founded by Coral Gables resident Tim Anagnost, in memory of his brother and role model, James Captain.
Anagnost strongly believes that all children can benefit from going to summer camp and made it his goal to make the camp experience available to children of all socio-economic backgrounds.

The Community Recreation Department is excited to announce their new AAC Access Pass.
The pass will facilitate contactless check-in, capacity control and quick priority registration opportunities. Going forward, the pass will be required for all patrons interested in registering for any classes, programs, or special events.

GableStage Theatre will celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, by distributing free succulent plants to the public.
Join us from 8 to 11 a.m. at the GableStage Box Office, 1200 Anastasia Avenue.
Newly announced Producing Artistic Director Bari Newport, GableStage staff, and volunteers will be on hand. "Art and nature are intertwined. That's why Earth Day is a big day for us," said Bari Newport. "Come join us as we celebrate new beginnings."

Cocoplum Bridge update
The Cocoplum bridge replacement project is currently in design which is anticipated to be completed in Fall of 2021 with construction slated to start in Spring of 2022 with the associated bridge closures for late Spring or Summer of 2022.
Currently, there is an ongoing repair project consisting of structural repairs Miami-Dade County deems necessary to meet the timelines for the replacement project.
