Stallion Way Dedication
Last Friday, we held a ribbon cutting ceremony on our new Stallion Way. We were blessed to have 1966 alumnus, Mike DeAscentis Sr., who was very instrumental in helping us complete this project, here to cut the ribbon and celebrate with us. Mr. DeAscentis was the driving force behind the engineering and execution of this dynamic update to our students’ daily commute. Also at the celebration was Father Tony Davis, pastor at St. Matthias Church, Columbus City Councilmember Emmanuel Remy, student leaders and members of the SFD Marching Band. This beautiful new drive is made of pervious pavers and will have a positive and lasting impact on our school and neighboring community.

Stallions in the Spotlight

The SFD World Languages NHS members participated in the Operation Christmas Child service project. Students collected and wrapped over 100 shoeboxes, filled them with toys, school supplies and hygiene items, which will be sent to children in need around the world. We are proud of the generosity of time and resources our students contributed to a great cause.

Senior Elias Grayson does a lot of volunteering in the near Eastside community through his church, Mt. Calvary Holy Church. His service, especially on their Annual Calvary Cares Day making lunches, is very much appreciated. Mt. Calvary Holy Church also shares food, clothing, books, toys, and household items each year with their neighbors.

As we head into Thanksgiving, we are so grateful for the adult volunteer leaders, the student leaders and the time spent with fellow classmates seeking closer relationships with God, at our recent Fall Kairos Senior Retreat.

Students in the Child Development classes have been learning about the importance of observing children, as well as interacting with them through age-appropriate activities that incorporate the four key aspects of a child's development: PIES (Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social). Last week, SFD staff members volunteered their toddler-through-preschool-age children for a live-action simulation of a preschool classroom. SFD students learned just how different the PIES behavior of a 2 year old is from a 4 year old, and identified specific ways they differ. They enjoyed the children tremendously, and demonstrated the ability to be present and engaged -- key qualities of attentive and loving parents and caregivers.

As Bishop Brennan spends his last week in Columbus, we thank him for his kindness, compassion, leadership and service to the people of the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, and especially the students and families of St. Francis DeSales High School. We are forever grateful! Pictured is Bishop Brennan during his final visit at SFD, blessing Stallion Way.

SFDHS Tech - Apple Items
AppleCare for the student iPad: Just a reminder that the classes of 2023, 2024, and 2025 all have AppleCare+ on their school issued iPads. If the student's iPad is damaged in any way - physical damage, battery life or the machine seems to be running slow - that iPad can be taken to an Apple Store and looked at for possible replacement. The coverage allows for 2 incidents of accidental damage for every 12 months. Each incident, if a replacement iPad is necessary, costs $49.00. To check the end date of the AppleCare policy on the device, go to Settings > General > About and choose AppleCare+ Coverage Available.
iPad Cases: As the school year progresses iPad cases can become worn down and begin to lose their protective value. Please be sure to keep the iPad in some form of case to ensure your student is always prepared for our 1:1 learning environment.
Apple Pencils / Stylus: Apple Pencils have become a go to device for use with the iPad. While these devices are wonderful tools for note taking they all have the same style and design making them incredibly difficult to tell apart. We are noticing an uptick in lost or misplaced Apple Pencils. It is strongly suggested that a family/student get a case, engrave, or place some type of definitive marking on their Apple Pencil. Any advantage will help get the Apple Pencil returned to the owner. As a reminder, if you purchase an Apple Pencil via Apple's website they will engrave it for free before shipping it to you.

DeSales would like to have a copy of each scholarship awarded to our students even if they do not plan to attend the institution. We will share the result of their hard work by noting their accomplishments in our Graduation Program. We will list the college to which they were awarded a scholarship and the scholarship name. Dollar amounts will not be included. Please have your student bring a copy (or we can make a copy) to their Guidance Counselor or Mrs. Hoyer in the Student Service Center. Thank you!

Lord, today you warn us to not be deceived by those who pretend to come in your name. In our world, we have many who speak as if they know all that is to be known. We may even be confused by the conflicting claims we hear each day. Let us have the wisdom to listen to Your words, Your voice that resonates deep within us. We pray this to you Our God, forever and ever. Amen.
