A Prayer for July
Dear Lord,
A new month begins full of hope and promise, fireflies and campfires, sunsets and sprinklers.
Half the year has passed and what a year – full of uncertainty, the unexpected sickness, health, worry unrest, injustice, the inability to listen.
Yet, here we are wanting to be present to do more to listen more to feel more deeply the plight of your people.
We enter this new month hopeful for your presence making all things new, renewing spirits and hope, watching dreams take flight.
Breathe your spirit into our homes, communities, and world.
Breathe your love into tired souls and restless spirits.
Breathe your grace into each moment of our days.
Help us to do better, love more fiercely, listen more deeply, and open our hearts to your Word.
Amen.
Kimberly Knowle-Zeller is an ordained ELCA pastor, mother of two, and spouse of an ELCA pastor. She lives with her family in Cole Camp, MO.

Who is considered a
Survivor of Suicide
from the Suicide Prevention Network
|
|
Who is considered a Survivor of Suicide?
"A Survivor of Suicide" is used for someone who has lost a loved one, family member or friend, to suicide. This loss to suicide can be a burden that never goes away. If someone dies by suicide, there is a ripple effect through family, friends, and community. Often this is a shame-filled grief as we are afraid to speak openly about a suicide death.
One book, “A Long Shadowed Grief: Suicide and its Aftermath” written by Harold Ivan Smith, is very helpful in supporting Survivors of Suicide. Smith begins his book by asking questions that we also need to ask ourselves: “How can one live a spiritual life as a suicide survivor? In what ways is faith permanently altered by suicide and by the stigma attached to it?” For more information on this topic: https://afsp.org/ive-lost-someone.
Simple First Action Step:
Put the first paragraph above as a definition of "A Survivor of Suicide" in your bulletin and newsletter and be ready for conversation.
Words are power. Next month we will talk about how essential it is to change the language about and around suicide.
Remember to share this number widely:
Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255 or text TALK to 741741
We meet monthly. Find out how to join in at this page.

Types of coaching
Individual Coaching
Individual Coaching allows for a person to have a 1-on-1 conversation with the coach. The session focuses on the leader’s needs, plans, and goals. This format is ideal for leaders who are very focused on personal growth and development and need time to process their challenges and develop their plans.
Leaders that might appreciate individual coaching: Senior Wardens, Vestry Members, Church Staff Members, Clergy, Committee Chairs, Bishops.
Coaching Clusters
Coaching Clusters are set up for triads of people to be coached in a 90 minute session, each getting 30 minutes of coaching. The members of the group are often people with something in common, with each working on their own goals. This format is ideal for leaders who would like to be coached while also connecting with other leaders who have similar challenges. This format allows for each person to be coached individually while also hearing others getting coached, which can sometimes lead to deeper learning. Coaching Clusters also allow for community and network building.
Leaders that might appreciate coaching clusters (where your group consists of the same role): Senior Wardens, Vestry Members, Church Staff Members, Deacons, Priests, Chairs of Diocesan Standing Committee, Chairs of Diocesan Commissions on Ministry.
Team Coaching
Team Coaching focuses on a whole team of people and the work that they are trying to do together. This group is together because they have a common goal and mission or they are trying to define that common goal and mission. Sometimes the people aren’t yet functioning as a team and want to learn how to be a better team, and sometimes the team wants to take their mission and ministry to the next level of efficiency.
Teams that might appreciate coaching: Vestries, Church Staffs, Diocesan Staffs, Camp and Conference Staffs, Parish Committees, Diocesan Standing Committees, Diocesan Commissions on Ministries.

Archivists
Date of next meeting: TBD
Zoom link:
The Archivist Network held its first meeting via Zoom on 21 June. Seven of the fourteen dioceses were represented. Prior to the meeting each archivist posted a message for introductions and a brief description of the diocesan archives. The three topics discussed at this meeting were: 1) how are we capturing electronic records for archival preservation; 2) how have we been able to work with congregations in the work of maintaining their own records; and 3) in light of the General Convention resolution on the Legacy of Slavery, in what ways have we assisted our respective dioceses in documenting this legacy of slavery. We agreed to meet quarterly. The convener was asked to invite the archivists of the other seven dioceses to join this network.

We will also react to the following quote from Joerg Rieger's No Rising Tide: "God does not become human just anywhere, but in a family of construction workers and day laborers, located on the underside of a small part of the powerful economy of the Roman Empire. This perspective has the potential to shed some new light both on the study of economics and on the future study of theology."
