Faithful Stewardship
By DR. MICHAEL SIMPSON
Finance Chair

Stewardship is essential for every church community. Although the term has come to mean an annual request for financial support, its meaning is much broader. It includes how funds are used and the impact those funds have in advancing the Church’s mission. The request for financial support will come in due time, but for the next several months we will share insights into use and impact.

Our first report is on the beautification project in front of the preschool. The image below shows the freshly planted beds that will soon blossom with rich foliage and summer color.

How is this stewardship?

First, it graces our buildings with an inviting landscape and a sense that we are a community that tends its garden.

Second, it was funded through a matching grant program that dramatically increased the value received for the funds provided by Church members and preschool parents.

Third, it provided good, outdoor work for a hard-working team of gardeners. Lastly, and hardly least, the preschool children were inspired by their teachers and the project to plant their own garden and so learn much about the stewardship of nature.

A project you helped to fund was carried out well and is already having impact.

Well done, good and faithful servants.
ART BRUNCH
Sundays at 9:00am
Art & Poetry - Longing for the Ideal

How do you deal with the harsh realities of life? Last week we read poets who plunged into the darkest aspects of existence hoping for some catharsis or breakthrough. This week we will look at art and poetry which seeks solace by reaching for ideals. We will focus particularly on the poetry of Christina Rossetti (sister of artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti) and Stéphane Mallarmé. These poets believed the artist could perhaps conquer, or at least mitigate, suffering through creative expression.
-----------------
In this series, we explore the history of poetry and its relation to the visual arts. Beginning with the oldest forms, epic and love poetry, we will make our way to the 20th Century, where poetry was seen as a great hope to fill the void left by the "death of God" after WWI.

In our examination, we will include the visual arts since poetry and painting are particularly related. Leonardo da Vinci said, "Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen."

Even if some of us are not fans of poetry now, we may very well become fans after this fascinating exploration. During this series, we all should feel a fresh desire to enjoy the fruits of Calliope's gift, she being the greatest of the muses and the one who inspired Homer.

See you Sunday! And please share this event with kindred spirits.

You can learn more about each week's teachings at the WAMA Art Asylum page HERE.
