Imagine a virus so common that over 200 different strains exist, nine proven to be oncogenic to humans.
Imagine a virus so pestilential that by the age of 26 most of us have already been exposed to it. Furthermore, at some point in our lives, we will have at least one type of mucosal infection from this virus.
Now imagine this virus may remain dormant for as many as 40 years before “re-emerging” as squamous cell oropharyngeal cancer.
Finally, imagine that as a dentist you are responsible for early detection of a cancer, for the most part, has no visible lesions. By the time you can see lesions, most oncologist agree it’s already stage 3 or 4. This means dentists are on the frontline to make early diagnoses.
The virus is HPV-16.

Dentists Allowed to Administer COVID-19 Vaccine |

By now you have probably heard the news—under the Public Readiness and
Emergency Preparedness Act, dentists and dental students are allowed to administer
the COVID-19 vaccine and have temporary immunity from tort liability claims (Garvin,
2021). Although there are still questions about how and where dentists can administer
the vaccine, more and more dentists will likely be called upon to help given the recent
initiative by President Biden, to make the vaccine available for every adult by May 1st.

Dr. Joy Brauer graduated from University of Missouri- Kansas City School of Dentistry in 2003. She is currently working on receiving her accreditation with the AACD (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry) and only need one final case to pass! Dr. Bauer's hobbies include working out at Orange Theory Fitness and hiking with her husband, Dr. Howie Brauer, who is also a dentist, and spending time with my 3 daughters. Her dental piece of advice is to photograph all of your work and then evaluate what you could have done better and implement this on your next case. She likes meeting other dentists that are interested in learning and continuing to improve their skills!

Recent CE: An Academic Review |
To increase dental team efficiency and clinical skill set, the AzAGD successfully launched and implemented its first “For the Love of the Dental Team” 3-part webinar series this past month. Free for AzAGD members and their team, these incredible hands-on training courses were sponsored by Elevate and Kettenbach, who also sent attendees free product samples as well. The first course taught by Dr. Bjorn Melander on March 13 was on “Mastering Provisional Crowns,” the second course on March 20th taught by Ms. Ellen Gohlke, BS, RDH on “Reviewing Radiographic Techniques,” and the third course was taught by Dr. Mai-Ly Duong on “Applying SDF and Sealants.” Attendees ranged from dental assistants, to hygienists, to dentists, and all were welcomed to ask questions, participate, and show their handiwork via Zoom to the instructors and to the rest of the class for both feedback and increased camaraderie. |

Hello friends,
One of my favorite managers at Xerox said, that “paralysis by analysis” can freeze an organization. His mantra was, “Do your due diligence and then start implementing. If it is not working, admit you are wrong and go in a different direction. At least you’ve learned what doesn’t work.”
The previous two years have been filled with activity to provide you with CE that members have requested. Quality programs have been developed to help colleagues develop camaraderie and attain FAGD and MAGD designations at a fraction of picking and choosing courses separately. Free CE for your team have been given to build skills and provide cohesiveness. Let us know if we should change directions or stay the course.
With a great team of your colleagues, I will be leading the AzAGD for two years and providing you with continuing education that will satisfy your thirst for knowledge as well as your education requirements.

The intoxicating aroma of orange blossoms permeates the air as I sit in a friendly patch of sunlight writing this Letter. The promise of rebirth, renewal, and rejuvenation after this past difficult year rides on the tailcoats of this new Spring season. The encompassing warmth heralds Mother Earth officially turning a new page, and we avidly follow along… awaiting the next chapter, and excited to contribute a line to our collective human story.
As humanity shakes off the growing pains of this past winter, we at the Arizona AGD want to remind you that we are always here for you. Although the pandemic may have physically distanced us, professional groups such as the AzAGD can help bring us closer to each other and improve our interpersonal connections because this global adversity has shown us how we are far more similar than we are different. Much as we stand stronger together as a beautifully human woven tapestry with a shared global experience, we also stand stronger together as a profession than as individual doctors. The benefits of organized dentistry have never been more apparent than now.
