Commentary

It is fair to say that the wisdom of One Health has benefited from the COVID pandemic, which itself has resulted in an unprecedented common cause by the G7 leaders who have already announced support for vaccine financing and grants in the order of one billion vaccines. This is unquestionably a highly welcome act of solidarity with all countries……But it is the short-term answer: This is looking at the present urgency of containing the spread of COVID-19 and its variants without recognizing that the COVID-19 pandemic is the flashing red light to potential future epidemics or pandemics. https://tinyurl.com/fs8dmm4w

May 25, 2021 CUGH Webinar
The WHO is the leading global public health agency. Its role is essential for our collective and individual health. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have an opportunity to strengthen it, to make it a more effective, transparent and better funded organization. Reforms that countries can support to achieve these goals were discussed in this webinar by Dr.s Ala Alwan and Dr. Marie Paule Kieney, two former WHO leaders. Moderated by Dr. Kieth Martin. https://bit.ly/3heJj1k

Part 1 - 'One Health 101: What is all the fuss??'
Hosted by the One Health Commission, in partnership with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, The Wilson Center, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. The first webinar, ‘One Health 101: What is All the Fuss?’, featured an overview of the One Health framework, systems and policies, and highlighted best practices in preventing the next pandemic. Freelance Reporter Jimmy Tobias narrated a true One Health success story about the Bracken Cave in San Antonio and the bats that dwell there. Professorial Lecturer Dr. Bernadette Dunham led a deeper exploration of One Health relative to zoonotic diseases and beyond. Dr. Greg Gray addressed One Health Systems and Policies. One Health in Action
Hosted by the U.S. NASEM Program Standing Committee on use of Emerging Sciences for Environmental Health Decisions and the NIEHS. There is growing evidence that the environment can play an important role in mental health—yet research into the effects of environmental stressors rarely focuses on behavioral and mental health outcomes. This virtual workshop will bring together experts in mental health and environmental health research to explore emerging research on the relationship, harmful or beneficial, between environmental factors and mental health. See the Proceedings of the Workshop. https://bit.ly/3vUIobS

OHSS welcomes Dr. Séverine Thys to the Leadership Team
Severine considers herself a One Health (OH) anthropologist. She started her academic career within the OH movement in 2009 as an anthropologist in the Animal Health Department of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), Antwerp, where she served as co-investigator in three FP7 EU projects (ICONZ, ADVANZ, NEXTGEN), coordinated a strategic network on Zoonoses and Neglected Diseases aimed at fostering intersectoral collaboration and promoted the OH concept among ITM institutional partners. As a lecturer on qualitative methodologies in several OH master programs in Belgium and abroad, she continues building bridges by actively developing activities for the Belgian OH Network together with representatives of different ministries, universities, and civil society organizations.  Get to know Dr. Thys.
The recording of her OHSS webinar obout her PhD dissertation research can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/hptmpr7k (Click Register to start the recording)

The mission of OHSS is to strengthen the network of individuals who incorporate social science concepts and methods in research applications and commu-nity initiatives that link human, animal, and environ-mental health. In 2021 OHSS wishes to further engage with the OHSS community through active participation in work groups. Work groups provide an action-driven opportunity for professionals from the social sciences to work together with those from other disciplines to address a One Health topic. The purpose of this 5-minute survey is to identify your interest in participating in or leading an OHSS work group. Answers will be reported in aggregate form. We hope to hear from you. https://tinyurl.com/3y5rc2nj

Neglected One Health Issues
Lyme disease is one of the most common vector-borne diseases in North America, affecting thousands of people per year. The species of deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis) that carry Lyme-causing bacteria are found in warm, forested areas in the Northern Hemisphere. As global climate warms, deer ticks are migrating north, which means more people are at risk of contracting the disease. Serge Olivier Kotchi of the Public Health Agency of Canada has been studying how climate change affects the incidence of vector-borne diseases in Canada, including Lyme and West Nile Virus. The medical geographer and his colleagues recently published a study in Remote Sensing which showed that the risk of Lyme disease is expanding north in Canada as temperatures change. In particular, they found that between 2000 and 2015, Lyme risk doubled in the province of Quebec and tripled in Manitoba. https://tinyurl.com/x67r6272

June 22, 2021 OHSS Webinar
Hosted by the OHC One Health Social Sciences Initiative. Speakers: Deborah Nadal, Medical Anthropologist, U Glasgow, and Abi T. Vanak, Ecologist, Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, Bangalore. Dog mediated rabies in India continues to be an important public health concern for many reasons including belief in alternate systems of medicine and poor understanding of the dynamics of disease in dog populations. In Western India, the socially and economically marginalized Devipujak community worships the goddess Hadkai Mata to seek protection from rabies and, at the same time, from caste discrimination. One Health must aim not only at eliminating zoonotic diseases, but also at creating societal wellbeing and achieving justice for humans and animals. View the event flier. One Health, Texas and the Planet - Seminar (Virtual)
Speaker Dr. Juan Lubroth, is the former Chief Veterinary Officer of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). He was co-author of the Manhattan Principles, which has escalated to a global movement with several initiatives, policy papers and educational efforts that raise the importance of One Health. Dr. Lubroth spoke on his prime interest: understanding the complexity of pathogens and their life cycles – not during the pandemics or epizootics – but where the pathogens ‘hide’ in nature (reservoirs or hotspots) and their recrudescence for outbreak and disease prevention, and preparedness planning. He also addressed how we can integrate the One Health concept in our education.

One Health Goes Wild
Dr. Oreta Samples of Fort Valley State University, Ft. Valley, Ga is currently leading a study regarding zoonotic implications of disease transmission to hunters, taxidermists and game processors who handle native Georgia wildlife carcasses as part of a 5-year grant driven project to promote safety where such handling of wild carcasses may be routine. The study looks at white tail deer, raccoons and opossums as sentinels or potential carriers of ectoparasites that may transmit zoonotic diseases to those hunting, preserving or skinning carcasses as well as other zoonotic diseases. Current MPH students involved in Thesis Research benefit from collecting/analyzing/reporting on data from state regulated DNR-sponsored quota hunts and nuisance trapping operations throughout the year. Peter J. Hotez, MD, PhD
In Preventing the Next Pandemic, international vaccine scientist and tropical disease and coronavirus expert Peter J. Hotez, MD, PhD, argues that we can—and must—rely on vaccine diplomacy to address this new world order in disease and global health. Detailing his years in the lab developing new vaccines, Hotez also recounts his travels around the world to shape vaccine partnerships with people in countries both rich and poor in an attempt to head off major health problems. Building on the legacy of Dr. Albert Sabin, who developed the oral polio vaccine with Soviet scientists at the height of the Cold War, he explains how he is still working to refresh and redirect vaccine diplomacy toward neglected and newly emerging diseases. https://tinyurl.com/eyhm9pcp
