Dear Rising Eighth Grade Families,
Please read the information below and then complete this google form indicating your child’s choice of elective for the 2021-22 school year by Wednesday, June 16th.
Math Information
Students who took Pre-Algebra B in seventh grade will take Algebra 1 during their eighth grade year. Students who took Algebra 1 in seventh grade will take Geometry during their eighth grade year. We do have a newer course in eighth grade called Integrated Algebra and Geometry; if your child is being considered for this course, you will be contacted by the Math Department with details.
Electives
Eighth-graders will choose from: Band, Choir, Orchestra and Theatre/Art (described below). Students moving from band, orchestra or choir should have spoken with those teachers before making the switch to the elective listed below.
Art 8
Students learn a mix of technique and invention, necessitating group decision-making and individual choices. Students are expected to work independently while pushing beyond their former experience and begin to develop a personal approach to art-making within the structure provided. Students will explore public art themes/styles and create original works to benefit and engage our community.
Theatre 8
Let the games begin! Students will learn the history of theatre games crafted by artists such as Viola Spolin. Students will study theatre companies such as Comedy Sports, Burpee Seedies of Denison University, and Second City to flex their improvisation skills. Through a series of writing workshops, students will create original sketch comedy (similar to Studio C and SNL) through inventive characters and situations. The semester will culminate in an improv/ sketch performance for a small audience.
