Spring is around the corner, (really, it is!!!) And the spring bulbs are starting to come up all over Waupaca... April this year is really without a holiday, except for April Fools Day (today) We won't try to trick you but we will give you a couple interesting links about April!

April is Poetry Month!!!

WCAB, along with our partner, the Waupaca Public Library, is once again celebrating the art of poetry with a number of poetry events, and we want you to indulge, enjoy and participate!

POETRY CONTEST

There is still time to enter your original poem in the "Waupaca Awakens with Poetry" Poetry contest. GO HERE for poetry submissions.

  • Three selected winners will be notified on April 17th.
  • Gift card prizes will be awarded to selected winners, $50 to first place winner, $25 to second place winner, and $10 to third place winner.
  • Poetry contest winners will be invited to read their poems at our Waupaca AWAKENS with Poetry reading event on April 24th.

For the month of April, The First Wednesday of the Month is

TANKA WEDNESDAY!

The tanka is a thirty-one-syllable poem, traditionally written in a single unbroken line. A form of waka, Japanese song or verse, tanka translates as “short song,” and is better known in its five-line,

5/7/5/7/7 syllable count form.

Kid and Adult Classes for Spring: Registration closes April 1!

Adult Ravioli!

Did you know making homemade pasta is easy and a whole lotta fun? Chef Shelly will show you how to make a simple pasta dough, and then roll it out for fresh ravioli. Besides making two different ravioli fillings, we will also make a spring lemon asparagus salad. This is a hands-on class so be prepared to get a little messy and have fun ‘rolling in the dough’.

Everybody loves spaghetti! Chef Shelly will show you how to make classic spaghetti with meat sauce. But best of all, we will also roll pasta dough thru a pasta machine and make fresh fettuccini, and enjoy it in a creamy cheese sauce. Come prepared to get a little messy, but it will be worth it when we enjoy eating your fabulous chef creations!

The Catch-All Basket is perfect for placement on a desk or countertop, serving as a convenient catch-all for miscellaneous items. The basket's base dimensions are 9 inches in length and 5 inches in width. Beginners are encouraged to join, all necessary tools and materials will be supplied. Please bring a hand towel.

SHINE EXHIBIT at Waupaca Public Library Exhibit Room

The SHINE! Exhibit will be featuring original fused glass tiles from the WCAB fused-glass tile workshops that were hosted in 2023. A select portion of these tiles will be on display in the exhibit hall of the Waupaca Public Library. Come learn how we created these tiles, how this project came together, read some of the stories behind the featured tiles, and how this sculpture will come together later this year! The exhibit will run from April 13 - June 1 during library hours. More info on SHINE!

Dr. Michael D. Jacobs will speak on this topic, presenting, “The KKK in Wisconsin 100 Years Ago”

Jacobs will discuss the Ku Klux Klan in Wisconsin and pay special attention to Waupaca County, looking at how the organization recruited members and its place in our past and present.

Through April 12: submit your original poem to the Poetry Contest for a chance to win! Prizes will be awarded, plus a chance to read at the Poetry Reading!

April 24 Check out the "Waupaca Awakens with Poetry" Poetry Reading at Waupaca Library and hear original poetry by James Botford, and the winners of the Poetry contest and an Open Mic!


April 1-15, the Blackout Poetry event will be set-up on the Engagement table in the upstairs area of the library behind the copier. We will have discarded book pages and black out markers that poets will use to black out unwanted words within the page. The words that remain make up the created poem.


April 15-29 come check out the Crankie! Turn the crank to read the "World's Longest Poem!" (is it really?!?!)

SHINE EXHIBIT

The Waupaca Community Arts Board and the Waupaca Foundry have teamed up with the Waupaca Community, and produced over 170 fused glass tiles. a selection of these tiles will be on exhibit form April 13-June 7, along with many personal stories by the artists who made them, the story of how SHINE came to be, the Foundry''s input and plans for the SHINE sculpture, and much more! Memory Cafes and the New Story about Dementia

Susan McFadden, PhD, is professor emerita of Psychology at UW-Oshkosh. Susan’s program addresses reasons why we need a new story about dementia that turns away from the dominant “tragedy narrative” in our culture. It will show how the worldwide memory café movement is creating dementia-inclusive communities where people living with all types of this brain disorder can experience joy, meaning, and friendship. Examples from the work of Fox Valley Memory Project will demonstrate the many ways memory cafés ease isolation and create meaningful connections among people dealing with dementia.

What Makes the Human Brain Unique?

Andre M. M. Sousa, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Dept. of Neuroscience at UW-Madison. Andre presents the differences between the human brain and the brains of other primate species. This includes discussion of brain size, number of neurons, brain connectivity, and overall organization of the circuits that govern some of our most complex behaviors.

Growing Up Farley: a Story of Addiction, Love and Forgiveness

Tom Farley, brother of the late actor Chris Farley, is an author and national speaker on substance abuse prevention. In this talk, Tom chronicles his lifelong journey with his brother. Touching on lessons learned from Chris and his struggles with addiction, Tom begins by speaking about his brother’s addiction and the effects it had on his family, and specifically, himself.
