2022 SBDC Excellence & Innovation Award and National Small Business Week
The US Small Business Administration (SBA) presented Pace University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Regional Director Andrew Flamm with the 2022 SBDC Excellence and Innovation Award (SBA New York District) in recognition of the Pace SBDC’s impact on local economic development, job creation, and support of small business growth in the region. Issued during National Small Business Week, the award was presented by Marlene Cintron, Regional Administrator, SBA Region II and Beth Goldberg, District Director, SBA New York District Office, and the SBDC was proud to have Dean Lawrence G. Singleton of the Pace University Lubin School of Business join for the ceremony. Read about it on our blog.
Past Event: Crowdfunding for your Small Business
In May, the Pace SBDC hosted an especially informative panel discussion devoted to crowdfunding. Moderated by Pace SBDC Regional Director Andrew Flamm, the panel featured representatives from crowdfunding platforms Indiegogo, Kickstarter, and WeFunder, who discussed how crowdfunding can help small enterprises raise much-needed capital while staying connected to and growing their circle of supporters. They also covered key aspects and considerations for using their respective fundraising platforms, and shared inspirational examples of winning campaigns where entrepreneurs raised relatively significant funds. Pace Student Project: Harlem Baking Co.
This spring, Harlem Baking Company (HBC), founded by Charles Devigne, a military veteran, became the focus of a successful Pace University Lubin School of Business student marketing project. When Charles decided to make his foray into desserts as an antidote to his restaurant business challenges during the pandemic, Pace SBDC business advisors Rawle Brown and Susan Gluck were there with business planning, financial and marketing guidance. Susan later introduced Charles to Lubin's Professor Mary Long, who engaged the students of her Advanced Marketing Management class to study HBC and present their findings. Get the details here.
Success Story: Norwegian Baked
This month's Pace SBDC client success story is Norgwegian Baked. With the help of business advisor Sandra Cely, the Brooklyn-based Norwegian crispbread company was able to obtain financing, rent and furnish an industrial kitchen in 2019 at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, and make improvements to their bookkeeping processes. Further, during the brunt of the pandemic they secured COVID-19 relief funding through a Paycheck Protection Plan loan which helped the company retain staff positions. Pace Student Entrepreneurship Club Pitch Session
The Pace SBDC collaborated with Pace's Entrepreneurship Club on two events to kick off National Small Business Week celebrations. At the first event, Pace University student entrepreneurs ran a mock Shark Tank. They pitched their ventures to peers and Pace SBDC Business Advisor Susan Gluck and AJ Getteran Associate at a private equity firm. The panelists provided feedback so that the entrepreneurs could fine-tune pitches and be prepared to present to real investors. Later, student small business owners were invited to table their businesses outside of One Pace Plaza to either sell products or promote services. There was an amazing turnout from both university and Lower Manhattan communities. Read our blog post for more information.
