PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
There seems to be a rising tension around the construction industry. Perhaps uneasiness if a better descriptor. Covid restrictions are lifting, and there is certainly less fear about our general health than in recent times. Various office staffs are returning to work at a pace prescribed by the wishes of employers and employees alike. I know that it feels good to me to hear voices in the office. That said, the “office of the future” or conversely the “future of the office” are both open for discussion. That as a topic to be continued into the future.

Some of my tension comes from the uncertainty of the economy. Fuel prices continue to rise. Inflation is increasing. Many businesses remain closed with an inability to find adequate help. Some businesses did not survive the financial stress of the pandemic. As usual, there will be no political views expressed; let it be said that there are issues moving forward.

The good news for us as architects is that work seems to be plentiful. The AIA’s Architectural Billings Index (ABI) has been positive since reaching 53.3 in February and rising to 57.1 in April. I am sure that most of you follow this number and know that anything above 50 denotes a rise in billings by firms compared to the previous month. You know that this information is available at the AIA website (AIA.org.)
