Why Can’t Cancer Take a Break During the Holidays?

Wisdom From The First Christmas

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:19

Christmas is a season of anticipation. It’s easy to look forward to fun gatherings, amazing food and joy filled gift giving.

Yet you know Christmas can be hard for cancer patients. Their gatherings bring attacks on their immune systems, their food is only good if it does not taste like metal, and shopping is only a joy if they have the finances and the energy to shop. The truth? Christmas is hard on cancer patients- emotionally and physically. As a strong yet tender-hearted person, Christmas can be hard on you too.

Here’s the struggle: How can you live each day in joyful anticipation of the Christ Child’s birth when the burdens of your patients are too real?

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Definitely the people – the patients and the staff are the greatest. People ask me, “Isn’t cancer depressing?” Cancer is a terrible thing, but the people are so inspiring - such courage, strength, and creativity! And the staff are awesome too. I see and hear how compassionate they are and how hard they work to make sure the patients get what they need.

Overtreatment near the End of Life:
3 Tips from an Oncology Research Nurse
by Christopher Buck, MS, RN, OCN
As Christians, we are body and soul.

Since cancer treatment can seem like a fast-moving medical train, it’s easy to lose focus on both. Focusing only on a patient’s body can too often result in the neglect of their soul. As the train approaches the end of our earthly life, it is vitally important to address the needs of our cancer patient’s souls.

The soul must take priority over the body or we miss the chance to prepare well for our earthly departure. Perhaps as medical professionals we should consider how our patients need to prepare for death. Cardinal Sarah explains this beautifully, “Death is the most important act of earthly existence. All life is made to explode, to go further, to merge with Life, with God.”

A Devotional on Blessings
& Thankfulness
Once there were ten lepers. Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priest. Along the way, they were healed.

Imagine—after years of isolation from everyone and everything you love, and night after night of praying or wishing that someone, somewhere would take away this terrible disease, you’re HEALED!

These ten guys must have completely freaked out! But, do you know what? Only one turned back on the road and went to thank Jesus for healing him. Only one.
