IFMA Member Spotlight

Meet Josh Clark

King County Rail Division Facilities Section Manager (Oversees all of KCM Rail Facilities)

How did you get into your current position?

I was recruited by Executive Leadership at King County to take on a Section that was badly in need of crew and work management. I knew almost nothing about Facilities Management at the time, but I know how to manage people and get work done. Apparently, that was enough to get the highest ranking position on the Section.

How do you support Facility Managers?

I have morning reports from my mid-level leadership team (Chiefs) that I use to take the temperature of the previous night’s work and plan for the day. I always have a large list of ongoing projects to track including our multiple system expansions, budget prep, report out to County Executives and about a million meetings. I am involved in higher level grievance hearings and other union issues as well as contract bargaining. Almost all of our work is tracked through performance metrics, so I’ll look at all the data and make sure we are on track. Finally, I get out in the shops and field to visit with craft level employees as often as possible. My employees are everything to me, so my goal is to make them feel valued and supported by all levels of leadership.

How do you benefit from the IFMA and the Seattle Chapter?

As a newer member I have yet to take advantage of all the benefits but one thing for sure is that I’m making connections with the rare breed of professionals that are Facilities Managers. This is very supportive and useful to talk shop, compare best practices and hopefully even for recruiting.

Any advice for new members?

Sign up for tours, attend the roundtable meetings and be curious! This group offers so much perspective on what we do and how we do it.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Motorcycles (Dirt, street and adventure), explore the outdoors, camping, travel and DIY projects. I have a cabin in the mountains and that is my “Happy Place!”
