Recovering from Burnout

As schools are wrapping up this most remarkable year with end-of-year ceremonies, and you are having your final board meetings of the year, it is in the 'pause' following the adrenaline rush and continuous 'high gear' that you will feel burnout the most. This applies to you and your Head of School and I hope that you both find time this summer to hit the reset button.

"10 Ways to Beat Burnout" published by the Eblin Group shares simple and practical things you can do to overcome burnout. The author, Scott Eblin, begins by discussing that the habits of highly successful people who have learned to manage stress well, have two things in common: a common belief and a common commitment.

"The belief was that the only person who’s going to take care of me is me. The commitment was I’m going to make sure I get at least a little bit of what I need every day to be at my best – not just for work, but for my family, friends and myself."

He goes on to humorously describe three levels of burnout you might be experiencing: Singed, Fried, or Extra Crispy and shares specific strategies to combat each of those levels of burnout.

So as you begin your summer, share this with your Head of School, implement some of these strategies yourself, and use this time to re-fresh, re-group, and re-energize!

Every governing body should be prepared to appoint an interim leader, whether it is part of a long-term succession plan or as a risk-management strategy. This webinar will start with the decision to appoint a short-term leader: When does it make the most sense and what are the potential costs and benefits? Then we’ll talk about how and where schools find interim heads based on their circumstances and timing. How does an interim search compare to – and connect with – the search for a long-term appointee? Finally, we’ll share some tips for making the most of an interim’s tenure. What can a board do to maximize excitement and confidence among all stakeholders through an extended leadership transition?
