Virtual Training Course in Risk Assessment for Biosafety Authorities from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador

AFSI and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) recently concluded a joint Virtual Training Course in Risk Assessment for Biosafety Authorities from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. The introductory session took place on February 23, 2022 and focused on collecting feedback on what regulators from these three countries would like to see in subsequent trainings. Based on this interaction, the second session on April 6, 2022 and third session on May 26, 2022 focused on problem formulation for environmental risk assessment of genetically engineered crops and identifying pathways to harm, respectively. Through this training activity, AFSI and IICA aimed to strengthen the relationship between members of national technical committees on biosafety from the three countries and foster the importance of simplified and science-based procedures for the three countries in the framework of the Trilateral Customs Agreement.

Two Additional E-Learning Courses on Food Safety Available in Spanish

Part of this training program included making additional courses on AFSI's e-learning platform more accessible to Spanish-speaking audiences, which has led to the translation of a total of four courses into Spanish. The first two courses were released in April, at the beginning the training activity, and an additional two courses on food safety have been added to AFSI's e-learning platform: (1) Concepts in the Safety Assessment of Novel Food and Feed and (2) Application of Problem Formulation to Food and Feed Safety Assessments. As with all our online resources, these courses are made available to regulatory agencies, academics, the private sector, and other interested stakeholders upon request, free of charge. Those who already have access to our e-learning portal can take the Spanish versions of these courses starting today.

Concepts in the Safety Assessment of Novel Food and Feed

This course discusses how people use information about foods to make basic decisions regarding food safety and how government regulators use similar information to address the safety of novel foods that may be introduced into their country’s food supply. It teaches which aspects of food are related to food safety and provides an introduction to the problem formulation framework for organizing food safety assessments of novel foods, particularly those derived from genetically engineered (GE) plants.

Application of Problem Formulation to Food and Feed Safety Assessments

The goal of this course is to help risk assessors and risk managers understand what problem formulation is and how it can be applied to food and feed safety assessments for GE crops. It shows how problem formulation can be used in these assessments to ensure that they are fit for purpose by walking through corresponding examples to demonstrate the concepts when conducting a real safety assessment.

Other AFSI Courses Available in Spanish

Prior to the two additions detailed above, AFSI already offered five of its courses in Spanish: (1) Understanding Low Level Presence in Agricultural Biotechnology, (2) Application of Problem Formulation to the Environmental Risk Assessment of Genetically Engineered Crops, (3) Confined Field Trials of Genetically Engineered Plants, (4) Genetic Variability in Crops, and (5) Environmental Risk Assessment of Non-Target Organisms for GE Crops. Spanish versions of AFSI's courses may be accessed by clicking the “Spanish” button on the main e-learning page.
