Orem, get ready to celebrate Family City USA’s kickoff to summer with family, friends, and loved ones during Summerfest’s many events between June 6–11, 2022. There is something for everyone to enjoy; there will be dinners, musical performances, pool parties, ice cream, treats, car shows, carnivals, eating contests, an outdoor movie, a talent show, a pancake breakfast, a baby contest, boutiques, entertainment, and a nighttime Grand Parade with impressive fireworks to cap it all off! All of this and more has been planned for you to celebrate Orem, Family City USA.

We live in a wonderful city. I was blessed to have my childhood in this beautiful place. I remember floating down the now-covered Murdock Canal on hot summer days, and going to the two drive-in movie theaters on State Street. Just like things have changed in Orem, my experiences as a student in the Alpine School district were much different than a student in Alpine today.

Today, Alpine School District oversees more than 85,000 students, encompassing fourteen different cities. This makes Alpine School District one of the top forty largest districts in the entire United States. It is the largest district in the state. Not too many years ago, I served on the Alpine School Board for six years. Since that time, the challenge of the demands caused by enormous growth in the north and northwest cities in the district hasn’t changed. The District chooses to address that problem at Orem’s expense.
Recently, the District has closed two elementary schools in Orem and an alternative high school in Vineyard. There is talk about closing more schools in Orem. Additionally, the District continues to increase class sizes on every level and take away many speciality programs in Orem. All of these closures and cancellations in our community are happening despite the fact that Orem tax payers are a major financial contributor to the district.

I welcome the current feasibility study being conducted.

My three questions,

1. Would an Orem school district be better for student achievement?Would having our own district help reduce class sizes and bring back specialty programs?

2. Would an Orem district be able to recruit and retain quality educators? I believe teachers are a major component of a child’s educational experience.

3. Is Alpine School District investing Orem’s taxpayer dollars in our children’s best interest? Are our tax dollars being spent outside of Orem? What is the best in the long term for the Orem taxpayers?

Orem is a healthy, energetic, great place to be. We love Family City USA.

All the best, and I’ll see you at Summerfest,

Terry D. Peterson
