DID YOU KNOW that collagen peptide supplementation in conjunction with exercise has been shown to improve structural and functional adaptations of both muscles and connective tissue?

According to a study from Frontiers in Nutrition, 12 weeks of 15 grams of collagen peptide supplementation combined with exercise reduced acute markers of exercise-induced muscle damage (LDH, creatine kinase, and myoglobin) and improved post-exercise regenerative capacity.

Thus, collagen had a positive effect on the early phase of muscular recovery by either improving the structural integrity of the muscle and extracellular matrix during the training period or by accelerating membrane and cytoskeletal protein repair.

Steve: The FDA announced the removal of the endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from food packaging.

Issued on February 28, 2024, "this means the major source of dietary exposure to PFAS from food packaging like fast-food wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, take-out paperboard containers, and pet food bags is being eliminated," the FDA said in a statement.

In 2020, the FDA had secured commitments from manufacturers to stop selling products containing PFAS used in the food packaging for grease-proofing. "Today's announcement marks the fulfillment of these voluntary commitments," according to the agency.

PFAS, a class of thousands of chemicals also called "forever chemicals" are widely used in consumer and industrial products. People may be exposed via contaminated food packaging (although perhaps no longer in the United States) or occupationally. Studies have found that some PFAS disrupt hormones including estrogen and testosterone, whereas others may impair thyroid function.

The FDA's announcement came just two days after the Endocrine Society issued a new report covering the latest science. The report's lead author purports, "A well-established body of scientific research indicates that endocrine-disrupting chemicals that are part of our daily lives are making us more susceptible to reproductive disorders, cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and other serious health conditions."

A good move by the FDA, only three decades too late. PFAS are ubiquitous and forever, so you still have to make sure that all of your detoxification systems are working optimally. A great place to start with this assessment is from a genetic wellness evaluation.

A 57 year-old male recently saw Steve because of cancer recurrence. He had stage four adenocarcinoma of the esophagus along with four small lesions on the liver.

He wanted complementary therapy to not only minimize side effects of conventional treatment, but improve his outcome. Given that some of the cancer was located in the esophagus, the potential for severe side effects such as painful reflux was high.

There's an account in "Chicken Soup for the Chiropractic Soul" of a 16-year-old boy named George, who woke up one morning discovering that he had lost vision in his right eye. His mother immediately made arrangements for him to visit a specialist at an eye hospital. The doctors did extensive testing but could not find a reason for his loss in eyesight. Follow up exams at the hospital for an entire year were no closer to finding the cause of his problem. This prompted George to consult with a neurosurgeon, who suggested that he might be suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. After that he went to another eye specialist, undergoing more examinations and once again, they had no reason for the cause.

He lived with this loss in eyesight for 12 years when one morning George woke up experiencing a severe headache and awful neck pain. He took aspirins, which didn't help so a friend suggested he make an appointment with his chiropractor. He was skeptical, yet when the pain would not go away, George acquiesced and went to the chiropractor. A thorough case history, spinal examination and x-rays revealed serious misalignments of his spine, which were apparently causing his neck pain and headaches.

After his first spinal adjustment George began feeling relief from his neck pain and headache. The next evening while watching television George noticed that his right eye had sight for about a half hour, then it faded away again. The next day his vision returned getting stronger and clearer. He had a comprehensive eye exam a few weeks later and his right eye was 20/30, almost normal. A few months later his vision returned to normal.
