How to Protect Yourself from Energy Scams
Energy scams can happen door-to-door, over the phone, or via email and often involve a scammer posing as an employee from an energy company. These scammers use deception and scare tactics to gain access to your money or personal information.
MCE, the local non-profit provider of renewable electricity content for Contra Costa, Marin, Napa and Solano Counties never goes door-to-door to contact customers and PG&E never goes door-to-door to solicit customers. Here are some common energy scams to watch out for how to protect yourself from Energy Scams.

Twin Size Sheet drive for Bay Area Rescue Mission
At present, they only have enough sheets for the beds are needing to wash and turn around the sheets in one day which is a huge burden on the staff. It would be very helpful to have some extra sets so they can rotate the sheets.
They would prefer new sheet sets- these sheets will get washed many times while in use so need to be in good condition.
MVPC will have a collection bin outside our Church office at: 10 Moraga Valley Road, Moraga. The drive runs until August 9.

White Pony Express Neighbors Helping Neighbors - Love in Action!
White Pony Express’ Neighbors Helping Neighbors (NHN) Program is a joint effort between White Pony Express and RecycleSmart that creates a new platform for community service and food rescue – connecting volunteers with smaller food donations they can personally deliver in real-time.
This program was designed to expand WPE’s ability to pick up and deliver donations from local restaurants, caterers, and cafeterias. These small businesses will be required to have an edible food waste collection service agreement in place with a local organization by 2024. We are here to help!
Volunteers can ‘claim’ a delivery at their convenience and are welcome to pile the kids in the car for occasional (or weekly) service runs. These food rescue heroes will act as the connectors between abundance and need – all of us taking care of all of us in action!

Dive into DVC's Piranha Pool!
This Fall 2021 DVC will be holding our third annual Piranha Pool Pitch Competition (our version of Shark Tank!) Over the course of the semester, student teams develop business plans and pitch them to judges for cash prizes (plus gain experience, bragging rights, material for their resumes, and networking connections).
All DVC students, including those enrolled in small business management and entrepreneurship classes, are encouraged to participate in the competition.
We are seeking business mentors to meet virtually with student teams on a weekly basis. This is a great way for you to share your experience and knowledge to help our students learn valuable concepts and skills to prepare them for their future careers. As a mentor, you would work with a student team (or two!) over the course of the semester. Your role as a mentor would be to give feedback to your student team and keep them on track with their business plan and pitch. You and your team would select the best day/time to meet. As a mentor, your time commitment would be an hour (or more, if desired) weekly from mid-September to the end of November.
You can also watch this video from the competition in 2019 (our 2020 competition was virtual).
Key dates are listed below with some details still being finalized:
Wednesday, Sept. 1-Mentor Orientation Meeting at 6:30 p.m. (Zoom)
Wednesday, Sept. 22-Pitch Kickoff Meeting with students at 6:30 p.m. (Zoom)
Most Tuesdays-Speakers highlighting business plan topics 6 p.m. (Zoom)
Friday, Nov. 19-Pitch Competition-Round 1 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 3-Pitch Competition-Final Round 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Don't have enough time to be a mentor? Here is another way you can participate in the pitch competition: Be a Judge! You could judge the student teams’ presentations on November 19 or December 3. Your time commitment would be three to four hours.
Please consider these great opportunities to help our DVC students! Please contact Mariam Worsham at MWorsham@dvc.edu or Lo Ann Winkler at LWinkler@dvc.edu if you (or someone you know!) are interested. Thank you in advance!

Cribbage Club Seeking New Playing Venue
An American Cribbage Congress (ACC) member club is in need of a new place to play their weekly local tournaments. Do you have a small meeting room available for 6 – 8 (sometimes 10 and hoping to grow) people, with a long rectangular table(s) so that the players could sit across from each other as they play? They play on Wednesday evenings from 6-9 pm. The group does not have any budget to rent a room, so they’re relying on your good nature. Please contact Pat Welsh at patwelsh@astound.net or 925-788-2407 with questions or possibilities.

Lafayette Library and Learning Center Foundation Distinguished Speaker Series Presents Joyce Maynard: Count the Ways
Thursday, July 29, 2021, 4:00 PM | ZOOM
Join us for an engaging and lively conversation with best-selling author Joyce Maynard as she discusses her much anticipated new novel Count the Ways.
Count the Ways is a poignant story of holding on and learning to let go. It traces the lives of one family from the years before Roe v Wade and the Vietnam draft through to the computer age, the early awakenings of the #MeToo era, and beyond. A masterful storyteller, Maynard has created an achingly beautiful and deeply compassionate novel of home, parenthood, love, hope and forgiveness that captures the blessings and bittersweet of life.
