The CSL in a Nutshell
Monthly Updates for Students, from the Center for Service Learning
As we begin another academic year, we want to applaud you for your perseverance through the many challenges we have all faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While undeniably difficult, the "new normal" we have been existing in over the last 18 months has brought rewarding opportunities for collaboration through virtual service and advocacy, innovative partnerships between campus and community, and more. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with you, advocate for you, and support you the best we can.

The University of Kansas has a reinstated a mask mandate for indoor spaces on campus, and are encouraging mask usage in crowded outdoor spaces as well. For more information about masks, testing, and vaccines at KU, visit the Protect KU website.

The Center for Service Learning staff will be working in a hybrid capacity this fall, with each team member spending some time in the office and some time working remotely. We can still be reached during normal "office hours" by email, phone, and web chat.

We hope that this information is helpful in considering how you might connect with our office and the community this year. As always, do not hesitate to reach out to us for support.

Service Opportunity:
CCO's Super Service Saturday
The Center for Community Outreach is hosting Super Service Saturday, August 28th. This event offers students the chance to volunteer within the Lawrence community and to connect with local nonprofits and fellow KU students. You can register to volunteer as an individual or with a student organization and volunteer as a group! If you would like to register as a group, each member of your organization who is interested must register themselves and write in the organization they are volunteering with in the appropriate field.

If you have any questions, please reach out to cco@ku.edu.
Networking Opportunity:
Volunteer Fair
Attend the *in person* 2021 Volunteer Fair on Thursday, September 2nd from 2PM-5PM! This event kicks off the school year by bringing KU students together with some amazing local organizations.

The Volunteer Fair is a great chance for you to explore a variety of volunteer positions, visit with organizations about their needs, and start making some long-term service partnerships.

Check out the most up-to-date list of attending
organizations by visiting Career Fair Plus.
Leadership Opportunity:
SILC Workshop
Join the Student Involvement and Leadership Center and the Center for Service Learning in a conversation and skill-building workshop about engaging your student organization in social change. Through this workshop, student organization members and leaders will consider the social issues connected to the focus of their organization, learn about strategies they can use within their organization to work toward a more equitable community, and become familiar with campus and community resources to support them in these efforts. The workshop will be September 16th from 2-3pm in the KU Memorial Union, Malott Room.

Please RSVP on Rock Chalk Central to attend this workshop!

If you require an accommodation to participate, please reach out to SILC at silcfront@ku.edu for arrangements.

 Professional Development Opportunity:
Kansas Service and Civic Engagement Conference
Join fellow civic-minded students to share your collegiate service learning and civic engagement experiences and learn more about what other students have done at the Kansas Service and Civic Engagement Conference. This program will be held virtually on November 3 and 4.

We hope you will register to attend the conference and also consider submitting a presentation proposal on behalf of yourself or for a student service organization you work with. Conference registration and proposal submission is open now!

Register today and consider submitting a presentation proposal!
 Leadership Opportunity:
Community Service Advocates
The student Community Service Advocates group is an opportunity for those passionate about community service or leaders of various KU student service organizations to come together and network, build partnerships, and learn from one another on a regular basis.

Community Service Advocates, serve as a liaison between their student service organization and the Center for Service Learning. If you are a part of an organization that has a community service/volunteer coordinator, this is a great opportunity for them to engage with other students in similar positions!

While we encourage student organization leaders to attend, Community Service Advocates meetings are open to any and all students who are interested regardless of whether they are involved in a student organization or not.

This year, we will be working to plan a Kansas Day of Advocacy with members of our Advocates group- we'd love your participation in this project!

Join our first meeting of the year on September 1 from 12:30-1:30pm.
