More than 600,000 people experience homelessness on a given night in America. Nearly half of these people—250,000—sleep outside. Homelessness is increasing across the country, as more and more hardworking households struggle to make ends meet. Rent is too expensive, wages are too low, and we have seen decades of failed housing policies. Instead of focusing on solutions like rental assistance and eviction prevention, cities and states are trying to arrest their way out of homelessness. Homelessness is caused by a lack of housing that people can afford. The solution is not court or jail, the solution is providing people with housing with services.
Help Ensure Fair Tenant Screening Practices
Submit a Public Comment to Ensure Fair Screening Practices for Tenants with Conviction Histories
HUD has released a proposal to update guidance to landlords of HUD-assisted properties to help eliminate unnecessary barriers that too often prevent tenants with conviction or arrest records from accessing stable, affordable homes. HUD’s proposed rule is a critical first step towards housing justice and racial equity. Because of historic and ongoing racism in our nation’s criminal legal system, Black, Latino, and Indigenous people are disproportionately harmed by screening criteria that unfairly deny people access to housing because of a history of conviction or arrest. Make your voice heard in support of fair screening practices and greater housing accessibility for people with conviction or arrest records by submitting a comment about HUD’s proposed rule!

Our Homes Our Votes: Voter registration 101
May 13 | 2:30pm
| |
Because renters move more frequently than homeowners, they must update their voter registration more often, which imposes yet another obstacle to casting their ballots. The first step to empowering low-income renters to vote is providing accessible voter registration opportunities. This webinar will review strategies to incorporate registration into your organization’s day-to-day activities and organize designated voter registration events.
Register for the webinar here. You can view past Our Homes Our Votes webinars on NLIHC's YouTube page.
