Creating, Conserving, & Connecting Parks, Trails, & Greenspace in Sandy Springs

SSC Getting Out and About!

The Sandy Springs Conservancy volunteer board of directors has been busy this year getting out and about in the community, spreading the word about the city's Spingway trail network plan, of which the first section is currently under construction; hosting events, speaking to civic groups, engaging with people at the Sandy Springs Farmers Market and holding volunteer workdays for our sponsors! SSC is grateful for the time and effort from U.S. Bank/Elevon volunteers who helped beautify Abernathy Greenway South on Earth Day weekend (pictured above). Also, thanks to the Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Dept for providing supplies!

We'll explore native trees, flora and fauna with special guest guide Helen Tapp, a long-time local greenspace advocate.

Registration is required and space is limited.

SSC Hosts Educational Meet & Greet

As part of our mission to educate about the value of parks, greenspace and connectivity, SSC recently held a meet and greet with community friends with a focus on the topic of the city's Springway trail network plan. Last week more than 60 guests enjoyed a few informational hours together at the beautiful home of SSC board members Cheri and Terry Morris. SSC Board Chair Jack Misiura gave an overview of the Springway plan, the first segment that is currently under construction and how the Springway will connect with regional trail networks such as Path 400 and trails in neighboring communities.

Girl Scout Nature Hike at Morgan Falls

Recently SSC led a nature/history walk for local Girl Scout Troop 22309 at Morgan Falls Overlook Park!

Our very own retired Executive Director Linda Bain led the group of 8-year-olds on a nature hike through the hilly wooded trails of the park, identifying native trees and plants and shared the history of the site.

Springway Update and What's Next

The first section of Sandy Springs new trail network, the Springway, is under construction and making progress around Orkin Lake near the Chattahoochee River and Morgan Falls Dam. Construction by the city of the board walk around the lake was delayed last winter due to rain and other environmental issues but is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The 1.6-mile segment connects Morgan Falls Overlook Park to Orkin Lake to Roswell Rd at Cimarron Pkwy. The next section of the 5-mile loop is awaiting funding for construction. The entire city trail plan includes about 30 miles of connecting paved pedestrian paths throughout the city. - More information on the Springway -
