As the economy reopens after a two-year pandemic slump, Washington employers face a new challenge: Too many jobs chasing too few workers.
“Labor shortage,” a catchall term, refers to the familiar post-pandemic phenomenon of a state with more job opportunities than workers willing to fill them. The short but severe pandemic recession disrupted business as usual, sending many workers to the online unemployment lines. Some will be back. Many won’t. Employers are meeting the challenge by increasing compensation, adding flexibility, automating, and upskilling their workforce.
